There is always a theme with Magikarp and Feebas. Magikarp is known as the weakest of water type pokemon, while Feebas is known to be the ugliest of water type pokemon. But then they evolve into the strongest and most beautiful water type. The theme they share is having to overcome the challenge that makes them ignored by others. I hope you incorporate this theme in the regional variant's evolution line.
Adding more to their foil relationship, although Magikarp evolves by level up as a game mechanic, the lore suggests that it evolves into Gyarados out of feelings of anger (e.g. James's Magikarp in the anime evolving when he kicks it, Team Rocket force evolving the Magikarp in the Lake of Rage in GSC by broadcasting fish-enraging radio waves). In contrast, Feebas evolves when you make it feel beautiful (by upping its beauty stat or trading it with a very pretty scale).
Magikarp has an ancient ancestor that was stronger, that is thought to NOT be Gyarados.
Did you know that milotic has the same BST as gyarados? They both have 540. So milotic has a similar competitive usefulness as gyarados.
@@BlueSteelFakemon what’s thier stat placement?
@@garrettlich7140 milotic has hp:95 attack:60 defense:79 special attack:100 special defense:125 speed:81
And gyarados has hp:95 attack:125 defense:79 special attack:60 special defense:100 speed:81
So milotic is more special based and gyarados is more physical based
I'm early enough that I can leave a comment and hope it'll be seen
I don't usually comment, but I'm so happy to have mermay back. I found your channel through one of these monthly challenges years ago now and you're one of my biggest inspirations to my art and my writing. Listening to the beginning was amazing, I could picture everything exactly. And not to mention your art, its incredible and I'm so happy to be able to see more of it. Listening to you design characters is so helpful and using your tips has definitely improved my art and designs so much, I'm really grateful. Your work is so inspiring.
Yes I agree with you. Jack is a big inspiration to me as well ❤❤❤
I'm not a Pokemon person, so I subscribe for the drawing challenges, primarily Mermay and Apoctober!! Also a big fan of Smaugust too. The lore that accompanies each drawing is what really sets it apart from other drawing challenges on other channels
Ironically I don't like these videos exclusive because of the lore. I would much prefer to hear about the design process and thoughts. To each their own.
Jup, im also pretty much the exact opposite.
And I'm glad that even in spite of our differences, we can both enjoy the content.
@@Nathanael_ForlornI find something about the lore bits uncomfortable to watch....and I don't know why because I play DnD and people do dialogue with themselves all the time and that doesn't bother me at all.
But I literally had to stop watching Popcross Studio's content because it basically turned into all lore and dialogue and I couldn't get through more than 2 minutes of an episode...
Do you watch Drawfee? They’re really good too.
@@aspiringwayfarer drawfee is incredible.
LOVE YOUR TIGER PRAWN. You’re one of the few artists that isn’t afraid to do something outside the typical beautiful mermaid, and the way you play with the anatomy of both the animal and human to create a new creature is astoundingly beautiful!!!
Hope to catch one of your next streams to see your thought process ❤
Something tells me you either already love or would love Project Moon games.
Man, I knew I struck something when I designed that Crystal Jellyfish one...
I always makes me happy to see people like my art and stuff, so seeing my piece at the end there made me a lil giddy :D
I cannot wait for next week's video, your mermay drawings have always been a massive inspiration to me 👍
He’s really channeling the energy of
“It’s my world, I can do what I want!”
That thumbnail has me wanting to see a ghost type angler fish inspired gyarados regional form.
Thanks for the idea lol
@@Cambrianlore12 No problem, if you make it please link it back here :)
@@thejoabear sure I was saying it as a joke but know I'm going to do it brb
I loved the story you made with Argyle Finch, and his journeys while at sea. Not to mention the transition right into your drawings! Incredible work!

There are very few stories from original content creators that have inspired and informed so much of my own work, yours is chief among them. I look forward to Mermay and Apoctober every year! It makes me want to just go back and rewatch them all over again! Thanks you for the wonderful stories and wonderful art ❤
Yesssssss i LOVE Argyle and his world so much
Also that Shiny for Magikarp is SO FIRE id collect a pond full of that gorgeous little fella
I like how Finch sounds younger in this video, as if he is just now writing all of his encounters into the journal his father left him!
The writing, narration, sound design, and overall production value of this series is absolutely breathtaking!! Thank you so much, Subjectively team. This month has only just begun and already it's clear it'll be a good one. Much love ❤️
Yes! Mermay! You're one of my favourite artists for this because you go into full monster territory for them
Jack I really really really need you to voice an audiobook because man you manage to voice your stories so well.
Came to see some cool designs, didn’t expect to become completely invested in a spoken narrative! If you ever make an audio book I’ll be there!
I'm so happy for another monthly challenge series!! As much as I love your Pokemon content, what drew me into the channel was what you do with Smaugust, Mermay, Apoctober, etc. The amount of effort not only put into the illustrations, but the lore you build with them too, is just so inspiring. I'm always so excited to learn more about your original stories !!
I like Mazian Magicarp’s potential for the themes of the Maza region’s story, specially regarding the past. I especially like the detail in its Pokédex entry in which it’s specified that older fishermen know Mazian Margicarp’s true worth because it’s the perfect place to show the ways in that tradition is good.
Old everything - from ways of life to habits to beliefs - are extremely easy to villainize in light of such a rush towards modernity and progressiveness. But, tradition and the old doesn’t have to mean cruelty and close-mindedness (though, it certainly can), it can mean preserving one’s culture to keep the memory of our ancestors alive, it can mean learning from our elder’s mistakes and victories, it can mean wisdom and identity.
I can imagine Mazian Magikarp and Mazian Gyrados would be a nice place to put some commentary on how younger generations who don’t know any better can make superficial conclusions, younger fishermen disregarding Mazian Magikarp only to learn from those who came before them sometimes you gotta not be so fleeting and wait for something wondrous.
In a more stereotypical light, it can show how some younger Mazians may be more superficial due to the rise of tech and social media - shortening attention spans in light of all the stimulation at our fingertips while some of the older gen seem to be able to appreciate nature more.
I heard somewhere from an older person, that wildlife will accept you if you just stay still and quiet enough outside for enough days. As a young person, I never would’ve had the means to ever discover than on my own - so many things to attend too and so many things to stay busy with.
growing up in a fishing town in rural Australia, you meet the fair share of old and retired sailors like Argyle, the way you wrote the stories for the days even during the first mermay with argyle feels like I'm a kid again listening to one of those old geezers recall their primes while my grandfather repaired their dingys (small boats used to get out to the bigger fishing boats). cant wait for more
I've never been a huge fan of Gyarados, I really like Magikarp itself! And the shiny Mazian Magikarp is so gorgeous!! Can't wait to see the evo! Good luck with the rest of Mermay!
This was so cool and eerie! Only one thing the stock smoke effects really made me chuckle
I saw the prompt "karp", and immediately knew it was gonna be magikarp
Ohhhh that narwhal looks fantastic~
Not that the others don’t, mind you! But that one was just 👌
So hyped my favorite season of the year, Subjectively Mermay
I already know this will be an absolutely wonderful series, Jack is such a wonderful storyteller and it’s truly a shame that these videos don’t get as much attention as the normal mahza region videos because these ones are my favourite (love the Pokémon tho)
I was about to call bull on the last Mermay being 2 years ago, but by God it was. It feels like it was so recent.
I feel like this variant of a Magikarp could have a split evolution, one that happens at an earlier level and in which it changes it self completely, which is a Mazian Gyarados, and one at a later level, which only happens if its friendship is really high where it doesn't change its appearance that much and embraces it carpy weirdness (that new evolution needs to be hella strong tho).
Have you ever heard of the mesmerizing legend of the pink river dolphin? This mystical creature, known as the boto-cor-de-rosa, transforms into a charming man who attends parties to seduce unsuspecting women. Originating from the indigenous culture of the Amazonian region, this popular myth has captured the imagination of generations of Brazilians. It's a tale that is both enchanting and intriguing, and I believe it would make for an exciting addition to this challenge.
This concept was partial inspiration behind the Pokémon Palafin!
Small correction is not indigenous at all is not even an evolved myth because the natives don't even had anything similar to the myth of the boto-cor-de-rosa before the settlers, it was exclusive made by the settlers (just like Mula-Sem-Cabeça), this is why he is mostly show transforming into a white guy with blonde hair, much later it was absorbed to the natives culture, what does more warm than good because now these creatures are killed on sign to not do wrongdoings and many there still believes that you can become crazy for looking at a boto eyes and even had a killer used this as an excuse of why he killed his whole family
I'm so incredibly excited for the rest of these videos they honestly inspire me so much!
I love Mazah but this stuff is why I love this channel. I love the enigmorph world
These are all looking great. I'd say the cormorant aspect of the harpy is a bit lost. Cormorants distinguishing features tend to be in their beak and neck, both of which are swallowed up by the human face. So, a great harpy, but the actual bird it's based on is a bit ambiguous.
I love Magikarp! It's the lesson of hard work and dedication paying off in the end. Yes, Gyarados is awesome, but it's the time and effort you have to put into raising your Magikarp that truly makes it all the more special when you do get your unstoppable sea serpent. Your version being a hidden/tarnished treasure just leans into that theme even more! Can't wait to see what kind of guided Gyarados you have in store!
after playing dredge i am completely in the mood for more creepy fish creatures
also. im curious if you have an answer for me: how do you draw so frequently and consistently. i love art, but art can be really tiring for me, i want to draw more, but its hard to muster up the motivation and energy to actually sit down and draw frequently
Gotta be my favorite series on this channel! Love the intricacies in the lore, and how it expands every year. Even if the Pokémon weren’t included, it would still be my favorite, but they are just icing on the cake
I've the stories you tell alongside your art. They're truly fascinating and have such clear heart put into each sentence. Paired with your art its quite an experience!
I love the mermaid from this week! Particularly: the shrimp one gives me strong tyranid vibes and the grouper... I need a miniature to play her as a barbarian!
i absolutely love how you colored the one for day 4. it’s so fun to look at and the color choices work so well together
I so badly want this as an animated series
i love the stories you always write for your drawing challenges, i'm so invested in the overarching narrative!
Literally my favorite time of year on youtube is May because of Subjectively. I can't WAIT
All I can say is HELL YES! I am so here for this! :D The story was engaging as always and the art was gorgeous. I think the grouper was my favourite though. That's my kind of woman.
Posted only 1min ago? Score! Also, I totally predicted it! Mazian Magikarp!
Now for the Dragonfish in Week 2 to be Mazian Gyarados!
I love your "month challenge" series so much!!! I'm terrible at committing to them myself, but it's so so fun to see your designs (and to listen to your storytelling! You're so good at it!!) 💖
It took me a minute to see the human body in the tiger prawn shell, then it just creeped me out in the best way. Well done!
🤩🤩🤩 i wasn't even remembering that it was mermay time. love the series you guys do for this and for spookytober !!
Yay, it's back! Completely by chance I was just re-watching the 2021 Mermay series the other day so this is extra exciting having just re-hooked (no pun intended) myself on the story. Also, that tiger prawn is a special kind of creepy.
YESSSS I LOVE HOW YOU WRITE STORIES AND WORLDBUILDING ARRGHHH YESSSSSS
Your monthly challenges with such cool lore inspire me so much and i just a g h i wanna do something this cool someday, please keep it up! Your art is so cool and definitely can be quite unexpected for a prompt such as "mermay" which makes it even cooler ❤
i love your stories you tell with the world of argyle finch so much
as a diehard lover of ugly pokémon and animals, i absolutely love mazian magikarp! they look like such a sweetheart, and the friendship evolution is such a good concept! the idea that this weird little guy just needs a bit of love and affection to reach its full potential is so sweet
Just got onto this vid, and though i'm a bit late, i am SO ready to see this story go on!
I already love mazian magicarp and it's evolution, coz it's a happiness evolution and seems to portray even more of what i think kantonian magicarp represents, that even something or someone seemingly weak or not as worthy, can be something amazing if cared about and given love and respect, i love that about magicarp.
FINALLY! I have been waiting so. long for your Mermay videos and you did not disappoint. Argyle's life is so interesting and even more are the creatures he's seen.
the sarcastic fringe head was defiantly my favorite!
jumping up and down in joy every time theres a new subjectively upload
I love your drawing challenge videos! Especially Mermay and Apoctober
So damn excited!!! One of my favorite series that you’ve done was Mermay.
I know you’re probably overloaded with drawing challenges already, but I think a cool idea would be Julycanthropy!
been making a water based dimension, i forgot all about mermay and now i have a reason to draw a BUNCH of fish
This is gonna be so good! Btw the saltwater crocodile from last time still haunts me it was such a creepy and good design!
The cormorant was not what I was expecting but that is really cool nonetheless
After seeing your drawing challenges throughout the years, from mermay to apoctober… I can only suggest from the bottom of my heart: Play the Dredge. It’s a new game that mixes fishing, a great art style, an amazing story, and love-crafian horror. Right up your alley if I’m not mistaken!! ❤
Box here
Dev Team: "Magikarp is in too many games and is too saturated in all media"
Jack: *Insert thanos meme* "Fine, I'll do it myself."
Jack: not all that glitters is gold
*smash mouth stops*
I would really like to see a video where you draw/talk about what kind of Pokémon team you would choose from all the Pokémon you’ve drawn over the years
Came for the fakemon, stayed for Argyle's story
The Magikarp shiny looked awesome!!! I love the hints of gold all over.
I like how mazah magikarp gives off that unpolished gold look. Like you just pulled a gold nugget out of the ground still covered in dirt.
I don't know if this will evolve into Gyrados or not (yet), but there is something I wanted to ask. Will the evolution get a Mega like Gyrados, or will it not?
The rendering on your feathers is GORGEOUS!
As a pokemon player, I can see this pokemon being crazy strong just from the fact that it's a gyarados with good as gold/rock head. Imagine this thing's head smash damage!
I could hear their songs:
Narwhals, Narwhals swimming in the ocean
I really want a full book of Argyle Finch's adventures. Or even a beastiary written from his prospective.
Oh I love the connection between this apoctober story. (That needs to be a book too)
I see that soothe bell and am very interested in a Friendship Gyrados
Broooo I am so excited for those ray mon, rays of all kinds have been my favorite sea creature since I was little.
As I was cleaning my dogs puke I played this😂love the art and pleasssssse keep up all the good work❤
Love Mermay! I really like the moody rendering style on tiger prawn. Maybe even more before you finished? it seemed like it had a translucency to it and you could see its organs? very creepy
This is Lovecraftian horror done better and by a better person lol. I love these series!
I feel like you're not as experienced in storywriting like this, maybe? But thats not meant as an insult because this actually really drew me in and reminded me how much I love writing these types of stories and how I can do it even if it's a little clunky. Your art is incredible, as always, but your stories keep me coming (for each of these challenges!) Excited for the rest of the month
Im so excited this story is continuing i loved last years mermay!
There's a mountain, and it's mighty high
You cannot see the top, unless you fly
And there's a molehill of proven ground
There ain't no where to go if you hang around
Everybody wants to sell what's already been sold
Everybody wants to tell what's already been told
What's the use of money if you ain't gonna break the mold?
Even at the center of fire, there is cold
All that glitters ain't gold
I love the Mazian Magic Carp, more than the normal one
I used to be not interested in drawing challenges and was just here for the pokemon but after last smaugust now im starting to get really invested
21:39 ... I don't think he's ugly! HE FRIEND SHAPE
Magikarp is un ironically my favourite Pokémon
ITS BACK ITS BACK ITS BACK!!! Woooooo!!!!! I love your mermay series and Argyle Finch!!!
The king of Mon is muddy! Thank you Jackalass.
MERMAY YYEAAAAAAHHHH i look forward to it every year i missed it!
Wow I know Mermay started but these are amazing designs!!!
I love this idea of Mazian Magikarp evolving through friendship, but what if there was a divergent evolution - the player who cares for their Magikarp and raises their friendship would get a calmer, more serene dragon upon evolution who would be a balanced and bulky mon with abilities like Serene Grace, while the player who lowers their friendship would get a glass cannon berserk attacker with Rock Head or something. And to highlight the two paths, Magikarp would learn both Frustration and Return, then at a certain level (maybe 30 in this game), they would evolve into one or the other.
Since the Kantonian variant of magikarp is so wide spread, it would be cool if both variants were around the regions waters. The magikarp that hatched in the region are the regional variants and others could simply migrate there.
I really like the Mazian Magicarp shiny, but I'm concerned that it might undermine the pokemon's 'narrative' (I guess I'd call it) since it's already a conventionally pretty pokemon (I imagine it's visually based off of koi).
I also like how the little guy looks kind of pissed/disappointed at the world.
+ I'm curious if Good as Gold is envisioned as a secondary ability or a hidden ability.
++ is this guy getting a mega? maybe this version of gyaridos is a mega that requires friendship rather than a stone (kind of like how raquaza doesn't need a stone)? I really like that idea (would support the mon's 'narrative').
All that glitters is gold, only shining stars thourgh the pot of gold ( İ dont remember the lyrics but its All stars)
YEAHHH THE MERMAY STORY CONTINUES
Damn it.. I knew I needed to do a magickarp variant during the Mazah contest
This is a real all that glitters moment
dat mazian gyarados silhouette looks bad ass ... can't wait to see it
I might draw something merfolk related at some point this month as practice for a certain superhero character after I perfect a certain other superhero character but for now I’m watching this video with my iPad charging
Wagagah!! The story gets cooler!!! Can’t wait for next week hehe :D
Respect for Karp! Respect for Karp!
Good work man!
Respect for KAAAAAARRRP
My guess is that the Gyarados is going to be this gem encrusted golden serpent
