Thanks for taking the time to make this video Donna - I really appreciate it! You hit the hammer right on the nail here ... I was doing exactly what you demonstrated: I picked up the sax and played a song over and over, non-stop,(10-15 MINS) until I just couldn't play anymore and expected that the next day I would be able to play a bit longer, but that was not the case at all. The gym analogy brought it home for me. Lift in SETS and play in SETS! This makes so much sense and seems so obvious now that you pointed it out - but I can't say I would have figured that out on my own. Again - thanks so much .... you have surely saved me from ruining my embouchure ... and given me a great way to practice diligently and safely. :)
Just started soprano sax, I used to play trombone for 9 years but the chops are totally gone now. Good to know a lot of the tips are all the same!! Thanks
I've been struggling with the same problem with my embouchure for a while. When I play even for a short a amount of time, I begin to leak air and it just feels like my corners and bottom lip is giving out. I will be practicing and my embouchure starts to tighten up to keep my lip from coming off the mouthpiece and then thats when the air starts to leak and my tone starts to sound bad also. I brought it up to my saxophone teacher and he seemed concerned because he thought it could be a muscle related condition that I can't exactly fix. I have been playing for about 5 and half years and I am a decent player but this problem is new and I don't know what could be doing that is causing it.
I have my two sides of the lips sore from playing too much as a beginner. It’s my first time with it sore will I be ok if I just rest it or is that consider damaging already? I’m trying to improve and be the best I can at the instrument and don’t want to repeat or make mistakes. Thank you
I don't know how to put my trumpet mouthpiece on my embouchure. Some people say it's completely wrong and others say it's fine. I can play high notes and rhythms and am the first chair in my high school's jazz band, but I've heard because I put almost no top lip on my mouthpiece I can't have as much endurance. I play like 2/3 bottom lip and 1/3 top. I need some help, please.
As long as you are not playing the red of your lips, you should be fine - but hard to tell because I am not seeing you nor hearing you. Some people play 50/50, some 1/3 to 2/3.....if it works and your endurance is good, you probably don't need to change. But again, I do not know you and can only guess based on what you wrote down. Always best to consult a private teacher
I did the same hing in high school and was able to play all he high solos in jazz band. Unfortunately I lost it my junior year and couldn’t play anymore. I played trombone my senior year which helped when I wanted to rebuild my trumpet embouchure.
hi, question from someone who's been playing since 4th grade and is now in 10th, when should I know when to rest? When I get tired? When I feel a little tired? thanks
Tired can mean physically as well as mentally tired, so it is better to practice in shorter sessions throughout the day. Check out my Practice Smarter course on my site: www.academy.donnaschwartzmusic.com/courses
sounds like some solid advice, Thank you so much for your lessons ! :)

Thanks for your channel Donna!

Consult your doctor - bring your mouthpiece with you - and also consult another private teacher.

You just answered your own question - you played too much as a beginner. You're dealing with small muscles, they need time to rest too.

Another diamond babyxxx
I keep having teeth marks in my bottom lip when i play my sax, what am i doing wrong?
You need to strengthen your embouchure and not rely on biting up into the reed to get the notes to come out
So me getting distracted by random things after every exercise has actually been benefiting me??? 🥳😂
