  • Gluck's is one of the most iconic iterations of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth. It's interesting that it is one of the very few with a clearly happy ending. This is definitely the saddest part, where Orfeo mourns the not one but two times he has lost his beloved Euridice. In one of the most famous Baroque arias of all time--one of the most famous opera arias, period--Orfeo despairs and wonders how he can possibly go on without the love of his life.
I love this production, and I love Blythe in this role. She brings such tenderness and such power to her portrayal. This production in general is my favorite. I could gush about the reasons why, but for now I'll just say, enjoy this mezzo powerhouse absolutely nail one of the greatest arias ever. Prepare to be obliterated.
From the Met's 2009 production directed by Mark Morris.
