Explosive Comparison Part 2: Ammonium Nitrate Based Explosives
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 июн 2024
- As a follow up to our initial video doing a comparison of explosives, we decided to do a more detailed demonstration of various types of Ammonium Nitrate based explosives. So we detonated 500g (1.1lbs) of the following explosives:
-Austin Powder's Red-D-Prime
-Ammonal (Tannerite)
-Ammonium Nitrate and Fuel Oil (ANFO)
-KinePak
Our thanks to Global Ordnance for making this video possible.

Hey friends! I know I said the link would be in the description but YT doesn't like that. So, we will be pinning a comment like mine and putting the link as a comment to our comment. Seems to be the only way we can do that without it getting yanked as spam. So be sure to use it and help us out!
Do y'all still need the small propane tanks? My work goes through quite a few and I have snagged quite a few
@@Falconguygaming yes we do! We so need them for the hell cannon.
@@jlambuth I'll send an email later today
@@Falconguygaming awesome
theres no link in the comment, its prolly being spam filtered. maybe break up the hyperlink?
An anecdotal tale of explosives; an instructor of mine was part of a Civil Emgineering unit in the Army, and one duty that he was assigned was disposing of expired ordnance. Most items were small charges of dynamite, mortar cheese charges, claymores, and the like. Near the end of the detail, one individual approached the range barely concealing a gleeful grin with a 40# cratering charge. The crew decided to lodge this charge beneath a *very* large oak stump, whose dimensions I don't recall. After the engineers detonated the charge, there was absolutely no evidence of the stump and my instructor supposes "there's a tree stump in low Earth orbit somewhere over Arkansas."
I think parking a junk car over top of the charge is fun, especially when the tank is full.
You need a more powerful explosive to put objects in low orbit . Like an exsplosive that blast at 100,000 FPS .
A nuclear bomb test in Nevada put the debris of a concrete cork in low orbit once .
@@lisadulac7828 the bomb test vaporized the concrete and shot the steel "man hole cover" upwards. The bit about low earth orbit was jest, of course.
@@kevinireland8020 Years ago when I was in the Air Cadets, I was visiting RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, and watched an explosives demonstration. An old United Nations Land Rover had half a kilo of C4 under it. Very entertaining when it went about 50ft up in the air and came back down in pieces :D
Due to the rotation of the earth, it's not gonna be above Arkansas
You guys perfectly skirt the line between an educational powerpoint and "hey bubba lets launch a toaster into space with tannerite"
Thanks for all you do! Enjoyable.
Yall should demonstrate shaped charges
That's coming! We have a whole series on shaped charges planned.
@@jlambuth looking forward to that! They are by far the most interesting type imo
@@jlambuth have you experimented with 3D printed shapes? I have word that they work well. If you need any printed I can send you guys some cones!
@@roryo1386 we are getting to that. If you have some made we would def appreciate a few.
Can you do one with a brass EFP against steel and bulletproof glass
This has become one of my favorite channels on YT. Its a great mix of the sciencey nurd side mixed with explosives that civilians would never be exposed to. I look forward to every video. Keep it up!
This guy explains stuff super well. Good job! Informative and fun.
I really enjoyed this one and I hope to see more comparison video soon. Good job guys, love this channel
This was very informative. I love your channel and I can't wait to watch the next episode of firey friday!
This looks like fun, thanks for taking the time to make it.
Watching is the next best thing. That's why I love this channel. I really like things that go boom and this way I can do it legally and safely. Boom on!
I never get tired of watching yall blow stuff up! Also, love that like to dislike ratio!
As an ex combat engineer, this sure does bring back some fine memories. Had lots of fun with ANFO using big bags of the stuff to make cratering charges when blowing a bridge. Moved enough earth to drive a troop truck into. Have you done any videos on improvised shaped charges and what they can cut and penetrate?? That would be good 😜
Thank you for taking the time make these videos.
These guys have every 10 year olds dream job. I would love just get to play along for a day. Stuff is fascinating.
As long as you aren't the one filling out all of the paperwork, the job's fun.
@@timberwolf1575 True, but it's clearly worth it. The issue is the cost of meeting all the requirements. You can really only do it if you have a business that will support the hobby.
@@thetobaccoguy1751 not really if you know how to make the stuff in a very very cheap way
@@elmothewise3915 You can't make most of the components they use, even with a extensive inventory of supplies. Stuff like C4, Comp B, dynamite, ect.
@@thetobaccoguy1751 you can however, you’d be surprised how simple it is to get the base supplies for it, but making it is tedious.
Good content! Keep it that way, comparison are most interesting and scientific methods are the only right way. Thx doods!
Great video ! It's nice seeing some real comparisons made in a scientific way.
Well done, excellent comparison!
Just found this channel through suggestions via Forgotten Weapons.

Global ordinance is solid, definitely go check em out
The KINEPAK is the most spectacular to watch
very cool love the videos and discord is fun meeting explosive enthuisasts all over the world is a good time thank you for making it im learning alot keep up the great work
You guys could corner the pool digging business.
Dig a shaft to most of the desired depth, deposit a charge of the right magnitude, and the blast may not clear most of the debris but should do a very good job of breaking up hard soil.
I've given y'all a lot of shit in the past and I just want to say everything's improving honestly. I hope one day y'all are big enough to get slow motion. That's going to be incredible. Keep on keepin on fellas.
Awesome video!
I'm so glad I stumbled onto this channel. Finally have something to really show coworkers how effective the stuff we use.
Thanks for the information
At the mine I worked at i believe they used kinepak. The report has quite the oomph when surface blasts were set. It was quite the experience
Very interesting well done thank you for sharing
Love these videos
I'm looking forward to the plastic. I would love to see PE4 C4 and compound B compared
Great information
very informative video!
Thank you doctor.
Very interesting video. I enjoy my Tannerite a lot LOL.
I hope these 2 questions won't cause any trouble
1) by fuel oil do you mean like diesel/home heating oil?
2) if the fuel oil helps prevent water absorption in ANFO...could it be added to the tannerite? Or would it cause volatile instability?
Thank you for this educational and entertaining content!
Man this channel is criminally underrated. Love your work!
Very nice 😏 I swear that first bundle of joy looked like an explosive hotdog from how you were holding it.
the forbidden hotdog
great video ... would the technique used be best for low explosives with more of a pushing force, versus tests to fracture something (wood boards, sheet metal), etc.? -You guys rock!
Would like to see more on how how are detonating the charges, especially the tanerite. Could see the det cord on the first one, guessing the same for the rest?
i never thought about using tannerite as an explosive for removing rock, but now i will have to try.
Reminds me of a story my friend told me in high school. He was in cadets which is like youth military / boy scouts in canada. Every month or so they would do a field trip and spend some days in the field. He was mostly focussed on "engineer" tasks so one day they built a bridge across a creek. Apparently it was quite good. The next time they went back to blow up the bridge. Pretty cool.
When he was back at school on the monday he told me how it went. He said that the demolition instructors explained how you would want to severely damage the bridge such that the enemy would have to clear debris and jerk around instead of just building a new bridge. Sounds cool.
When they set off the charge the bridge was "blown to smithereens" gone... the instructors were rather embarassed and said "yeah... dont do it that way".
Great vid.
Just a suggestion you should add R.E. factor when describing the explosive.
Very nice!
Thank you very much.👌🏻💖💐🎊🌹✨.
Awesome, thanks for the video. Next could you guys compare dynamite and TNT?
They are both from a similar time in history
I think we can do that.
007 explosive pen coming soon? Haha that would be so cool
Oh yes. The classic Bond explosive pen. I'll see if I can actually make one that is decent.
@@jlambuth sweet! Sorry I come up with a new idea in the comments of basically every video or community post 😅
Bet you guys are like, fuckin hell, this guy again? Haha 😂
@@Zachmman1997 actually, I always welcome ideas and input. Including yours my man. You won't ever see me complain!
And the Castro blasting cap cigar.
@@markdice6361 Damn that is a solid idea!
Ah, fun stuff!
its interesting that when digging holes effectively with HE there is a trade off where more brisant, higher VoD stuff will often perform more poorly compared to slower ones that do more "lifting" than "shattering".
With the ANNM/KinePak mixes, I recall that the effects were highly dependant on the ratios and mixing, along with the packing density, format of the AN itself (porous prills/activated or solid prills, powder etc).
Yep. Oxygen bubbles ( talk about positive oxygen balance, lol) charcoal. People don't expect the researchers findings to make sense. Yet at a chemical and molecular level it does. Brissance and power are two different things. C4 is high Brissance. Anyone is high power. Some are one sided, some have both.
Anfo, damn spell check
another video lets gooo!
You synthesis these explosives like nitromethene...love from india..band matram..
Truly fire in the hole!
Wonder how long are YT over lords are going to allow us to view such informational content.
So, we removed all our firearm stuff from the channel as that got videos pulled. As long as we don't show how to make explosives, YT is ok with it. They don't allow manufacturing or process methods.
Well I’m probably on a watch list now
I was looking up the MSDS for Red-D Prime. As a retired chemist, I am always interested in formulation. I noticed while on the Austin Powder Co. website that Red-D Prime is not designed for use with any strength of det cord. Do you think this affected your results? Almost forgot - Good videos!
anyone else think he was holding a hot dog at the beginning?
I was going to donate but then you said no blood diamonds... oh well. I will send in some organs instead. Keep up the good work!
Try the ANNMAL combination with a hint of micro balloons
Y'all should definitely test out sparkler bombs.
Can you please do one on armstrong mixture in large quantities that would be epic to see the comparison between all of the explosives it is however very unstable but it is powerful a lot more powerful then anything in this video
Maybe spray paint the ground so it's just a little more visual on video. Keep up the amazing work it's always exciting everytime you guys post a video.
We thought about colored chalk. The demo range is Sean's property and he is trying to avoid turning it into an EPA supefund site.
@@jlambuth Use the blue.
FYI: Tannerite can legally be transported as long as the elements are seperated. Once they have been combined with each other, it is prohibited to be transported once the binary elements are combined. If one does not hold an ATF explosives license, it is a Federal offense if you sell or distribute Tannerite as kits with their individual elements. It is also a Federal offense if you transport Tannerite once the binary elements have been combined.
When i make my illegal improvised explosives I generally use acetone triperoxide primary and amfo base charge. But I have always wondered what a fertilizer fertilizer mix would do: ammonium nitrate/urea?
What is the slowest explosive that can be utilized for a shaped charge?
Can you please try panclestites, ... liquid dinitrogen tetroxide mixed with kerosene. .
It's a really safe explosive because it is kept separated until right before detonation, and it's mixed remotely, no person is near it as it's being mixed
Aside from the Tannerite, could you use any of the other charges for rifle targets?
Fun video and while I agree that ANFO is disgustingly hard to detonate, it sure beats Ammonium tri-iodide. That scary stuff makes nitro seem stable
would be awesome if you made a video with nitroglycerin! it's a really interesting unstable explosive fluid.
We are going to do a video all about NG and its properties.
You should summarize the results in a table, showing average crater diameter and depth and detonation wave velocity.
hey, I was just wondering if you could compare some explosives to Armstrongs mixture, I'd love to see how dangerous it is compared to more well known explosives
AM is extremely sensitive, it's the only energetic material that I have detonate on me prematurely. It;s dangerous stuff
Rudimentary soil density test.
Get a star picket and a fence post hammer. Paint gradients on the picket.
Raise the hammer a set distance above the picket to strike it with the same force each time.
Count how many strikes it takes to force the picket into the ground by the same distance.
Equal number of strikes for the same distance will basically mean the soil is the same density.
Just two thoughts i will leave you with for tonight. Can you put a link to the sponsor up in the info section? The other one is an excuse for one more bang when testing things.
You need to show how the detonator adds to the effect of the explosive under test. You can do this by just setting up one more test charge with out any thing other than the detonator
and then set that off by it's self. Have Fun and stay safe.
I too like to Detonate tubes of Chorizo.
Spiciest chorizo around!
I really love ammonium nitrate energetic materials
It's good to see Mike from the Jersey shore tv show is expanding his talents to explosives.....
LOL. Now there is a nickname I haven't heard since college. I was wondering when someone would make that joke.
@@jlambuth lol.... when are we getting the fallout bottlecap mine yall teased a month ago or so?
I've heard that ammonal and ANFO are hard to detonate. Is there any other way to set them off if I don't have standard blasting cap? Could you please tell me how to make a blasting cap that will detonate them. Please reply me I'm in dire need of your help :(
Just watched the Tremors movies again. I was waiting for graboid guts to rain down ;)
Was wondering about shape charges use and properties
Does the addition of Fine Aluminum powder to ANFO enable it to be used for target practice similar to tannerite?
Emulsion is the way of trade anymore, Its great as the higher VOD helps really break rock. but boy is it a lot messier in bulk form compared to anfo lol.
Soooo...I can mix up tannerite and use that to set off an nm. I fly nitro planes and make my own targets. Worth a shot..
Ok ok so I'm curious if kinepak would have the same velocity as properly contained 70/30 at the same 500g per .I understand different type of detonation but gasses are what matters. And verey interesting about nitromethane I didn't know that. How about a plain nitromethane it has a tendency to detonate in confinement also hence top fuel drag racing.
I'd love to see a video on nitrocellulose
Would like to see the REF for the 4 of them as well as how much gas is generated per cu ft for each lb. detonated.
Pretty much anything will blow a stump, the decision you have to make is do you want to just loosen it from the soil, blow it 20' high or pulverize it. That's where experience and knowing your explosives helps 😉
Ok you've done the fireworks, the standard commercial explosives, military/LE explosive devices and small armament....so what's next, how do you top the aforementioned topics?
I know great things await us...
My great grandfather was moving a load of "discount" dynamite to his mine in Igo California over back road Hwy 3... they found his shoes and some wood is all.
Old material that had sweat out enough to become destabilized?
I bought a pack of Tannerite that was a dud. I’m sure it had excess moisture. Is there a good, safe way to dry the ammonium nitrate so I can use the rest of my Tannerite?
Why is explosive AN prilled? is this just easier to handle/mixed on-site or is this more efficient? I would imagine that powdered ANFO has a better (more intimate) AN/FO mix but I can see that prilled AN may be just as efficient if the AN fully absorbs the FO in equal intimacy. Would it make any difference?
Is Astrolite G a thing still and what are your impressions of this type of compound.
Can you mix ammonium nitrate with Red phosphorus as a shock sensitive flash powder
Just curious, if you have the time and equipment, how would recrystalizing the ammonium nitrate to get rid of anti caking additives, then drying it and adding nitro after doing that. I think it would significantly improve performance.
Did you fail chemistry?
Could you also build explosivly formed projectyle? But fired from a launcher?
I wouldn’t mess around with that. Better to stand off from an efp.
It'd be amazing if we could see a traditional 8" stick of dynamite (DynoNobel Unimax) detonated above ground and compared to say an m80
That's a fun idea. We can score the stuff, when it's available. I am not a fan of making large quantities of NG so it's safer (and cheaper) to just buy it. When it is available, we shall do that.
@@jlambuth Fantastic!! Looking forward to it! I can't really find out if the traditional size is 8" x 1" or 8" by 1 1/4", but I do know Unimax is really the industry standard. It would be super educational to see a single stick go off, as I don't think such a video of that really exists on RUclips
I always wondered if powdered sugar or regular sugar would work as a fuel with A.N.
I use emulsion explosives to blast coal underground but the best I've ever used is z powder from dyno noble it is a class a explosive it was on another level compared to the ready Prime I have used
What kind of fuse do you use to detonate the anfo?
try doing a flame fougasse
Cant believe you didnt try AN and Hydrazine
How about T-ammonal, ammatol, minol ,tritonal , Torpex and the explosive used in the battle of Messines ridge( 65% ammonium nitrate, 17% aluminium, 15% trinitrotoluene , 3% charcoal )?
