Sorry to hear that. I never water near the base. I stop watering 3 weeks before pull up. Also remove split skins as they split then tear away the last bit from the bottom after a couple of days plus keep soil away from the bottom of the onion as much as possible also have a fan coming on for half an hour 2/3 times a day. Time I get an onion to a show I’ve earnt it!!
This year I layed them on trays in the greenhouse. Ruffled them occasionally . And now there in the cool garage. I won’t take the broken skins off until a week before I show them😊
