  • Early notes of life on the island date back to the 17th century.... Have things changed since 1670? Is there really a floating mosque on the island? Who colonised Pangkor? What about the Pirates that sought refuge here? What about Dutch Forts?
We explore the island's main town where some of the traditions have not changed in centuries... Even some of the houses and structures have remained the same.
How crazy is the difference between here and a city like Kuala Lumpur?
Join us on a quick walk through the beautiful Pangkor and look at some of it's history and chat about why we think you have to absolutely come here if you have not been!
Don't miss out on Pangkor, it's a beauty and we've loved it.

I think why locals rate it so low is because our ideas of tourism is all about glitz and glam, exclusive infrastructure and all that. As a local i think it we dont really appreciate our culture and way of life, thus we don't really know how to advertise this part of Malaysia properly. We tend to manipulate our culture too much to a point where we undermine our grassroots culture.

Personally, I'm glad it is under rated... allowing it to reamain rustic. For me that is part of the island's charm. As a teen, Pangkor was a favorite destination of mine... back when there was all of 2 taxis on the island. Thank you for appreciating the more "real" parts of the place.

That is the reason why you breath on the smelly seafoods but we malaysian are very thankful to the people of Pangkor for producing the best seafood products.

I could see why so many Malaysians are recommending you guys not to go Pangkor because many still believe in touristy and superficial stuffs to only be shown to tourist and foreigners alike.
I personally love the charm and the less touristy nature of Pangkor if compared to other islands in Malaysia. In fact Pangkor have the best of both world - you get the fishing village reeked with the aroma of seafood and catches of the sea and of course super expensive resort like Pangkor Laut which Hollywood celebrities love to go.
IMO, Pangkor should in fact be on top of the list of any tourist recommendation as this island certainly packed with all sorts of experiences a tourist would like. I wouldn't wanna be in an island that after a day of beach-side activities and when we are famish, you only got hotel or touristy eateries. In Pangkor, you get genuine and great food - you eat and pay like a local! That's a genuine experience not many island resort could offer.
BTW been enjoying your videos for months and wish you guys the best. Also try to make it to Pulau ketam again when you guys are back in KL. It is not somewhere you could snorkel or to laze at the beach but you'll love to see the hustle and bustle of village life there and of course the good food. ENJOY!

People who said don't go to Pangkor , don't realized the nature beauty. Yes, Pangkor don't have shopping malls, small roads, old building, basically "undeveloped", but those undeveloped create nature hidden treasure. You can go jungle hiking, atv in the woods, kayaking, swim at the beaches, jog around the island (small island), everything nature has to offer. Seafood meals are also nice there. Pangkor is underrated just because blind people said it is not worth. Even some pangkor natives won't leave the island even if they has a job on the mainland, they travel back and forth every morning and evening. Park their cars at rented spaces near the jetties.

Pat and Giulia, there is a deeper war adventure story on Pangkor Island. During WW2, the late Col Spencer Chapman (OBE), was hiding in Pangkor Island as he made his escape from the mainland after sabotaging the Japanese army all over. Then, the late Communist Party Malaya Sec Gen, Chin Peng, met him in Pangkor to arrange for his escape on an awaiting submarine from the British Royal Navy just off the coast. This daring submarine escape enabled Colonel Spencer to regroup back in India as he worked out the plan to return to support the team. The exact spot where Colonel Chapman escape is on Pangkor Laut Resort and the beach where his Hollywood-like escape is where the Chapman Bar stands today.
Colonel Chapman's war exploits resulted in the basis for jungle warfare training for the SBS, and now your famous SAS. This book should be read off your bucket list. www.amazon.com/Jungle-Neutral-Soldiers-Two-Year-Japanese/dp/1592281079
