    Ozone really sprinkled some special sauce on this one. The Viper XC gives you all of the speed and efficiency of the Viper 5, but with the highest level of stability I've felt in a glider. This thing tracks like an arrow, partially thanks to the added winglets. I wish this glider existed when I did the Icarus!

      They are not winglets, the are Horizontal Roll Stabilizers that would stop the wing from rolling without a roll command input from the pilot. Very cool and innovative, they should be on every beginners wing to stop the pendulum in roll. They the Roll Stabilizers probably also stop wing twist from traveling past the Stabilizer from Tip Roll inputs.

    For an XC wing, you really need to also review the launch characteristics. Behaves nicely for you when you're loaded with camping gear? Slow / short launch for those tight LZs on rough ground? How well does it pull up in a crosswind?
    Does the landing have plenty of flair? Don't like to have hot, footdrag landings while loaded up with gear.
    These are more important to me for XC than a little better efficiency or top speed.

  • @wherecondorssoar7175
    @wherecondorssoar7175 Год назад +5

    I'm surprised that none of the big wing makers have offered a x-country wing with an inflatable leading edge tube. I am not a glider pilot, but I am an 'airhead' with 6K+ hours of fixed wing time. Doing a long x-country, the weather can change. The time it takes to inflate/deflate that leading edge tube seems like nothing compared to the anxiety of a paramotor pilot looking up and watching that wing in light chop. Even if it did slightly collapse, it would reshape right away. Kite surfers inflate their wings so they float, but this same tech seems applicable to what you do. Just sayin'.

      I discussed this idea with a designer. When the wing pitches too far forward - you actually want the wing to collapse - if it were to remain "open" then you can have the scenario where the wing runs out of energy when it is below you - and you end up in it..... not good.

    • @WeBeGood06
      @WeBeGood06 Год назад

      @@pg_jem They should be on every wing, especially beginners. As Tucker said, the wing acts like it is on Rails, wing stability in roll greatly increased. Beginners already have their hands full stopping the pendulum in Pitch using the Throttle. Getting rid of the pendulum in roll, would make all wings fly like they are on rails, doing exactly what the pilot commands in roll.
      People don't start out learning to drive cars by 'drifting' one, or sliding around on ice.

Look at what Irwin was doing in the 1960s, they ran into a deployment wall and stalled out BUT their canopy design research is still there AND no longer has deployment problems. Look at Kite Surfing technology, they have gone in weird directions. I tend to the view of inflated reinforced Wings with much shorter suspension lines BUT with a much greater stall tendency AND a much higher top speed.

      A pilot's ability to judge the distance to the ground below their feet as they come in for a landing is critical to this sport. "Flaring" the wing is what slows both the speed and descent rate of the wing and therefore the pilot, and the timing of the flare is what differentiates a successful landing from something much less pleasant and possibly very expensive. Your decision would revolve around that fact. That said, if you go up with an experienced pilot in a tandem flight, you would be able to judge directly for yourself.
