Denmark, to complete the list of the Nordic countries (Sweden is already on your list; Iceland has no military). After that Austrailia could be interesting.
Fun fact: Same day this video was published, the Norwegian government announced that they will increase the number of soldiers by 50 percent. And this year Norway pass the 2 pst goal.
That's good for Norway. I think in general most people turn into better humans from a year in the home guard or military, and a lot of today's youth could use it. The 2% I'm more skeptical of, as far as I gather the 2% will be achieved by moving numbers in a spreadsheet under "defence", like border control, aid to Ukraine, expansion of Kongsberg\Nammo etc. I'm sure the free press in Norway will have a good look at the actual numbers, as I understand the finance minister isn't very popular and known for his creative way of saying things.

Today Norway announced that the army will increase the number of Brigades from 1 to 3, establish a missile artilelry batallion, increase the number of contract persoenel by 4500 (Specialists, NCO's, officer etc) increase the number of conscipts by another 4500, the armed forces reserve by 13500 and the home guard by 4500. The Navy will recieve 5 frigates and 1 aditional submarine to the 4 allready ordered + 28 smaller vessels for inner coastal deffense. And the number of AA missile batteries in the air force will be doubled (NASAMS) and long range AA capabilities will also be added (Patriot or similar): all in all it is an increase in defense budget of 60 billion US$ and Norway will fulfill the NATO obligation of spending aqt least 2% of the GDP on defense in 2024, ancreased to 3% by 2036.

The Norwegian military is getting a massive boost in funding btw. It will hit and surpass the 2% goal soon. Supposedly also getting a huge increase in recruits, the campaigns and adds have already started.
Yeah, I've seen. It's great news. Getting young people into the armed forces will be good for their further life as well. And it generates work in Norway.
@@MilitaryRated Fun fact. They didn't take me in 6 years ago.. I am extremely unsure if I am feeling lucky or unlucky tho. And I was in really good physical condition and was a member of the Norwegian Arms association (DFS).
@@MilitaryRated Well, it's also worth mentioning that % of GDP is a little misleading as a metric. We have a huge GDP, and a small population, and resent increases has put us further away from the goal. In terms of actual military spending per capita we actually were 2nd in NATO and 7th in the world a couple of years ago. Spending per active service member in Norway is almost double of the US. So, there is a limit to how much we can possibly spend, while effectively managing the military without just bloating it.
Agreed. I said something similar in the analysis. I think that in reality Norway should focus on improving the roads and rail leading North and invest in automated maritime defenses akin to what Taiwan has. There are ways to invest in the military which also helps the civilian society. Spending money on Norwegian kit and infrastructure should be on top of the list.
As far as I gather Norway expects to be over 2% gdp spent on their armed forces by the end of 2024. Though the few people I know in the Norwegian army attribute this to moving costs around on a spreadsheet (i.e Ukraine aid) rather than actually increasing the spend. There are positive signs though, so hopefully by the end of the year with the delivery of the rest of the K9's & K10's, F-35's, the subs on order and tanks by 2025 it'll be a totally different story. 2% GDP is also a much higher figure than pretty much everyone around Norway, in example 2% of Norway's GDP is the same as 2% of Sweden's GDP, even if Sweden has double the population.
@@MilitaryRated Yes, there is talks and people seem eager to increase and I think reaching 2% is not the hard part. But we should instead look to Poland and maybe hit the 3% AT LEAST so we can have a better function navy, as landforces are specialized and extremly good, airforce about the same, and now in unity with the rest of the scandinavian airforces, cyber defense is one of the best in the world, but we lack a good navy, specially for having the worlds second longest coastline, but only 4 frigates and 6 corvettes which both are turning old very fast, and before we had cannon defences to basically any big town and fjord, now? Unless they are hiding such, I do not think we have good air protection or ship protection to our fjords which in history have been the only way a country sucessfully have invaded Norway. And we need to fix that before our big neighbour gets any ideas.
Norway has 4 NASAMS batteries. (Not 1) I think a lot of this information is outdated. And some of it classified it seems. There is for example a large emphasis on Navy and coastal defense and smaller teams and up-to-date manpads (or semi-manpads, crews of 2-3) has an important role as such Think Stugna-P just more modern and also with anti-ship missiles
Yeah, I've heard rumours about these neptune batteries, I just haven't found them anywhere in any credible sources, but it doesn't mean that they're not there, Norway likely doesn't want to show it's anti ship capacity to the fullest as potential enemies will want to use their fleet to invade. The NASAMS numbers must include some I and II, but I'm sure they'll all be mark III soon when the new defence allocation hits. Thanks for your comment. :)
@@MilitaryRated Norway is the main operator of NASAMS, we had NASAMS 3 operational in 2020 and had NASAMS radar upgrade in 2022, so safe to say all batteries in Norway are 2 or 3. In 2024 Q1, two major NASAMS contract was signed by Norway, one delivery for Ukraine, the other was 1.4 billion NOK contract for delivery to Norway, which will improve existing air defense capability. We ramping up NASAMS production capabilities, Spain and Norway have placed orders, I think chances are high other operators will do the same.
@@feonor26 What's really funny is when you realize large tankers/merchant ships have taken more 1st-line warships out than any other cause since WW2. (I think. Sea-skimmers are up there too)
