Back in 1982 my friend and I were 16 years old and in his 1969 GTO and we were heading over that bridge to island. Back then it was a "different" setting but it had a nice aquarium to go visit. My friend decided to light up the tires on the bridge and this quickly caught the attention of a Detroit police officer. As we got on to the island the cop was quickly heading towards us and we notice a sea of chrome and black leather as there had to be over 300 Harleys and some of the meanest looking humans on the planet. My friend yelled.."We're going in there" and we started driving down the road with the bikers parked on both sides. The cop that was following us stopped his car, turned off his lights and backed out.
So now we are in with hundreds of bikers giving us the evil eye... What to do? We quickly decided to start pointing out bikes loudly saying "Oh man! Look at that one, Oh! check that one out" So the bikers figured that we were just some kids that wanted to ogle their rides so we slowly wormed our way through them and decided to get off the island before our luck ran out.

I had a similar experience not too long ago. I was on a service call and i got pulled over for rolling through a stop sign. The LEO asked me why i didn’t stop for the sign and i told him the truth. I said “I’m sorry , but i was looking for an address and i didn’t even see the stop sign”. It was on a secluded street that has little to no traffic except for the residents that live there. So he politely gave me a verbal warning and sent me on my way. Cool officer. That night at dinner, i asked my brother “why did you even bother to pull me over in the first place”…we laughed.😂

Motorcycles should be allowed to do what you're doing. As long as you're not endangering someone. It's for your own convenience and your own safety from being locked between vehicles and being part of the traffic jam.

The police officer was respectful and dealt with the situation appropriately, the motorcyclist needs to abide by the road rules and take your helmet off when speaking with the officer. But this does demonstrate why most of the world allows motorcycles to filter through traffic. I have no idea what the law is in this city/state, but there is no need for motorcyclists to be held up in this circumstance or put themselves at risk of being rear ended and it would eliminate the need for using the cycle lane. Also wear an appropriate jacket.

You cannot pass on the right, ever. I've known that since I was 16. Such a long time ago. I'm in Cali so its is legal to split lanes and always has been although never on the side of the road or emergency lane on the right, period.

As a cyclist and motorcyclist, this is the kind of stuff that puts a target on motorcyclists backs. If you want to ride in the bus lane, buy a bus, and if you want to ride in the bicycle lane, dust off that Schwinn and get in shape. I'm assuming you stay off the sidewalks. Why? Apparently it's your god-given right to ride on any square inch of pavement you choose to.

Is it illegal? Never been to Michigan, but in California, when traffic is backed up, you can split the lanes on a motorcycle, not sure what the local rule is for a bike lane. Honesty is good, but he may not have done anything wrong.

Easy for the cop to complain - after all HE'S the one sitting in the air conditioned truck. The guy on the moped or motorcycle or whatever it was wasn't harming anyone in spite of sweating up a storm in the heat. He wasn't riding dangerously. The cars didn't seem to care one way or the other. The only one who was bothered was the guy with the gun. Why is it always like that?
