Strange rivalry....Federer 5-0 against him at Australian Open/French Open/Wimbledon but 0-2 against Del Potro at US Open. Federer 16-3 in non finals but 2-4 in finals
Federer's errors serving at set point in the 3rd set tiebreaker shows how nerves could get the best of Roger at times! He had 4 set-points total, 3 were on his serve! I'm splitting-hairs somewhat, but it is applicable in many instances throughout his career!
@flaviushonoriusemperorofro3903 Nah! That's what's called an excuse! He was healthy enough to beat Tiafoe, Youhzny, Lopez, and Kohlscreiber before Delpo, and he entered the Laver Cup right after the Open, followed by winning Shanghai, so he was healthy enough to play. Excuses are like A-holes, everybody's got one, and they stink!
Federer won every grand slam he played in this year till this match so don't even try to give the 'not in his prime' excuse and give Del Potro the rightful credit.
Fed had a great year in 2017. Him and Rafa won 2 slams each. I was happy for Roger winning OZ17 but with Rafa being 3-1 up in the 5th was sad he didn’t win it. Thankfully Rafa finally won his 2nd OZ in 22, in such a sensational way coming off months of injury to come back from 2 sets down and 0-40 against Medvedev who had destroyed Djokovic in straight sets a few months earlier at US Open. Nadal was a different beast though.
That was the key match for Federer, if he had won that match I think he would have won the US Open. So many unused chances in the tiebreak of the 3rd set, unbelievable, that's a match Federer should have won. From this match you can see how much stronger Djokovic and Nadal are mentally.
@TvRF2.0 I don't think it had anything to do with the back injury, and I doubt Rafa would have beaten him. The last time Rafa beat Federer on hard court was in 2014.
@TvRF2.0 first set lost by a DF at crucial pt. Third set wasted 4 set pts which three of those are easy shots., and eventually lost the set by an easy net shot. The fourth set lost a easy over head shot, maybe be due to back injury. Most of the time lost becasue of the mental issue rather than injury.
The cope is real. Nadal would have whooped him in the SF. I remember when you Fedtards were whining about Murray waiting until the last second to withdraw and that forced Fed to play in Nadal's half. Not Nadal's fault about any of this and not Nadal's fault that Federer had a minor back injury during the North American summer swing and played poorly against Delpo at the USO. Nadal would have beaten him easily especially after a 4 or 5 setter versus Delpo and Fed's back injury he received in Canada or Cincinnati. Nadal's 2017USO trophy should prove that on slow hard courts Nadal would have beaten Federer during his sole fluke year against Nadal (2017). And Nadal still ended up being Year-End #1 in 2017 🤣
@@issahatake90 The cope is real. Frauderer was 🐔💩 and scared of Nadal at 2017USO. 2017 was a fluke year for Frauderer. He faced Nadal only at 3 fast hard court tournaments and 1 slow hard (Indian Wells). He lost on purpose to Delpo so he wouldn't get whooped by Rafa. Same thing happened at 2010USO, 2011USO, 2013USO, and 2019USO. USO hard is not the same as AO hard, as proven by Novak's 10-0 AO finals record and pathetic 4-6 USO finals record and also Nadal whooping Nole at 2 USO finals.
I always saw del potro's exaggerated forehand setup as an akward liability, but a developed eye can at least understand the hang on many, though not all forehand shots as he does not really do depth control as much and risks overhitting.
Huh! It may seem so but sports mentality sometimes works like this. Especially when you are competing against your chief rivals. Agassi in his bio refers to this, how he basically tanked in the quarters in AO because he knew he was not in his best shape to beat Becker in the next round. He also mentions how players like Connors or McEnroe would sometimes do this so as not to give the others a mental edge. I am talking about non finals matches of course.
Thats just bs and if itas true speak awfully about his ethic, he undermines his Rival that played better than him and always gave trouble to him through his career, so idont buy that story tbh
nope he wouldn't.....he was healthy many times when he lost to the big 3 in later stages of slams.....remember R.G losses to fed and that wimbledon 2013 semis lost to nole ? he was healthy enough....yet he lost. and he should lose also that 2009 us open final to roger which he won due due to luck as fed was the better playe in 4 out of 5 sets and yet he managed to lose.
@@flaviushonoriusemperorofro3903 He wasn't fully healthy anymore, his mobility had really taken a toll. He was just too tall for the sport in general which leads to injuries. I'm not sure he would have won 8, but I think he would have taken a few more, maybe 4 or so
@@rustamghafari9585 no, Delpo healthy just had all the tools to be a nightmare to Roger Game, he always could handle well the fast pace that Roger played and could play comfortably from the baseline, it was his bh being hindered cause his injuries that prevented him to mantain that complete and dangerous game
it's more of a joke that he lost like 25 matches in which he held various match points included those 6 match points in his three matches against nole. that's the reason he is not the no 1 goat anymore when it concerns the stats and records.

We miss Federer as well now.
A beautiful moment for the gentle Giant of Argentina.
