Here's one I haven't seen done yet: if rails at a station are laid on a diagonal, you can load from cargo wagon to cargo wagon using four inserters, which means you don't have to worry about your four (or six) buffer chests getting unbalanced, as all inserters unloading onto a belt are working from the same storage. It's a perfect match for a diagonal smelter setup.
The tip about belt compression is wrong. Gaps or no gaps is completely irrelevant for belt calculations. The only thing that matters is belt sections. Aka continuous parts of belts that are not broken up by splitters or inserters interacting with the belt. The whole point of the belt optimizations is that each section only needs to be updated once regardless of the number of gaps between the items. Source: FFF #176
Why are you using Splitter for unloading from a train if those items still end up being unloaded on the same side of the belt that the splitter is pointing to?
This would have made my first play through much easier. My next time through, I started by building a not-so-random grid for power and eventually logistics. It felt like a hack.
After watching Michael Hendrick's death world playthrough, I now understand the value of placing a 2 pipe thick square in the corners (or...center?) of four connected chunks. The map view of potential biter expansions was so beautiful. So many green circles.
Reminds me of one time I accidentally built a very complicated belt unbalancer. I was new and trying to make a belt balancer. Me and my buddy had a good laugh at it
I... actually kinda figured out the biter expansion one myself! I would always put down 4 turrets, a chest, and 4 burner inserters when I cleared a nest early on. that seemed to slow expansion a lot, but I figured the turrets were just killing expansion parties :P
Never occurred to me that was why. I do the same and I also noticed they never tried to expand into my turrets. Probably because I always clear biters to beyond the reach of my pollution.
Huh, nice to know my "plop down a smelter and connect it to power whenever I see a bee nest or spidercat spawn" instinct from Satisfactory _would_ carry over to Factorio.
That actually IS how it worked prior to 0.120 or so. Then they nerfed the hell out of biters in about fifty different ways. Two months later they announced their last false promise of any semblance of a story or campaign mode. Six months of silence after that they stopped summarily deleting all posts that asked for an update on those promises, likewise deleted all records of those promises, and proceeded to *violently* gaslight their customers about those promises as they likewise began removal of all existing resources that had been intended for use in fulfilling those promises. Today the only remnant thereof is the crashsite, and maybe some text in the tutorial.
@@4F6D that defeats the purpose of unloading into a splitter... Tho his train unloading station example isnt very good since you can see only one side of the splitter is actually putting items into the belt because of how loaded it is
I discovered over the last few months that biter expansion sucks so i just turn off expansion now. I like them being there so i have to fight for the space, but i dont like have to hunt fown nests that have expanded into my pollution every hour. The last straw was a playthrough on a default world some months ago. The minimum expansion time on default is 4 mins, and i was about an hour into my playthrough going really well and spewing pollution, and the biters were expanding every 4-10 mins for the next 2-3 hours. It drove me ficling crazy. I would go out to deal with one nest that had kust expanded and then while i was dealing with that another would expand on the literal opposite side to where i was going. After a few hours of this it died down and i realised i just spent the last 2-3 hours doing nothing but chase some fucked spawns. So i just turn 'em off now
Factorio is a gem I am ADDICTED to the game Oxygen Not Included which is Great for expanding your "human" colony from 3 clones accross 8 planetoids but Factorio is aggressive colonizing against the Biters.
Old info. Spaces between items were optimized years ago. What causes lag now are only inserts into and removal of items from thw belt. There was blog post about it
Hi Trupen, Happy New Year. I've watched lots of your videos and have a question about your first tip in this one. It might just be an illusion, but in your very first tip in Toggle Ghost Planning, it looks like you are standing in one spot and just filling in all the ghost very fast, similar to how we fill a bunch of turrets with bullets. Is this what you are doing? What is the key combo? I hate the early game (no robots) because I have to build everything by hand and don't find BPs very useful at this stage because I need to build it all by hand anyway... Unless I know your magic trick haha. Thanks for your great content.
Can enemies spawn inside of a base that is surrounded by walls? I used to build a wall entirely around my base, with turrets located every so often slide my base, because I thought bugs were sneaking in and spawning new nests.
The performance gain of full belts is not even perceptible by us. Our machines do billions of instructions per second. A little belt math isn't going to impact anything.

This seems to be a prevailing misconception that people just keep repeating in the community, but it's just blatantly false.

Do you know if cobblestone or concrete contributes to the biter spawn equation?
bro i love the trupen community 😂😂
Stealing the train unloader idea for my future bases
Feel free to do so
Can enemies spawn inside of a base that is surrounded by walls? I used to build a wall entirely around my base, with turrets located every so often slide my base, because I thought bugs were sneaking in and spawning new nests.
I would always make a cross with some belts whenever i clear a nest.
i have no idea why, but the way he said bullsh!t killed me.
So I have to optimize my factory for optimal frames?
If you have a huge factory that doesn't run at 60 PFS then yes.
Put down some random bs and call it a day. Hey thats how I play all the time
first tip at the same time means that factory must produce more
The splitter tip doesn't work anymore.
(Except for green belts for some reason)
it's a bug isn't it?
@Trupen yes. But possibly not in the way you think.
Green belts are the bug. It's apparently intended behavior for the splitters to no longer do that.
this is a little late, but does concrete prevent biter expansion?
The spliter unloader system is probably gonna change half my blueprints
“Just build some random bullshit” as newbies that was the whole base
No matter what I do, there will always be spaghetti.
Instructions unclear, I pushed C and nuked my nuclear reactor. The bugs are swarming I’m falling apart. Please Help!
there is no help.

Or to prevent biter expansion just waterfill all around your base

Madman is optimizing his fps with belts. 😂
That is not untrue, but this way, the train has to wait longer at the station, because it only unloads to 4 boxes instead of 6.
