His "country" examples included a few pop/r&b songs, a song that makes fun of country, and John Denver. And that should've been one of the EASY genres to find good examples of! Apparently, Lil Nas X is country!🤣 (no, it was the guy dancing in front of the big rigs, who was the one making fun of country. Nas is okay, but... country?!) I'm no country fan, either. Hillbilly roots music is just fine AND dandy, but the stuff they've called country since it merged with pop, meh. No thanks. I like electronic music, so that's not the problem. It just feels like they're insulting the listener's intelligence, and disrespecting their inner nobility, but that's the pop formula, so what did we expect would happen, right? I can't imagine what songs will come up for Western Swing or Melbourne Shuffle. Not sure if I'll get that far. Wish me luck.
EDIT: the last hip-hop example is sick flow. And I guess Ska is like Gwen and Sublime, and afrobeat is anything that's not folksy from Africa. And "Dance" might as well be called "songs you hear at Pride day". This man knows his EDM tho. And the House was real house. I'm seeing a pattern here... Swing could've had Django instead of the monkey song, you know? You also didn't get the memo - you aren't supposed to play around the world or barbie world ever again. Not just both together - neither is acceptable. Okay. The 27:36 scene makes it all worth it🤣😂🙃😅. Never saw that one before. The heavy metal examples were not, ending with a pseudopunk show in a Dennys restaurant. That was actually the highlight. Thanks for including that one. I'll just go ahead and assume the nightcore examples are accurate. Man knows his synthpop and dubstep. But then voodoo people as dnb? "Drawing inspiration from handbag and gabber..." just kidding. Japanese emoglam. Eurodance. This is still level 2?! What's the difference between chillwave and vaporwave? No, there's no punchline... I'm just asking. Did you really use Marilyn Manson twice in industrial metal? Damn, well then I DO hope they're notifying you every time I edit this. I was beginning to feel bad about that. Especially since it's Friday dinner time some places. Breakbeats gave the idea. Acid and idm and techno had kinda weak examples, weirdly. And "medieval tavern" music is actually called Renaissance Faire Musick. And Chopin isn't baroque. Downtempo with drums is not the same as ambient. MIDI is pronounced "mid-eee" - like mid-level, but instead of level, you say the letter e. And you can't talk about psybient without Shpongle. That's just how it is. And the proper description of neuro is "the people who came up with that tearing bass sound that we've had to deal with the consequences of ever since." I'll just have to assume that your bubblegum bass examples are accurate. Man knows his jungle, that's for sure. Dub examples were surprisingly terribly wrong, though. DSBM is actually about whips and slings and black leather. Oh boy, so far I like level 5 "degenerate" the best. That's not good. I'm glad this isn't a Cosmo poll. The avant-garde examples were lazy. Was this entire video a scam to get people to find and subscribe to pogo (the entire plunderphonics category)? Because that's what's GONNA happen. And it's pronounced "oh silly scope", but more like silla than silly.

Stalaggh/Gulaggh has actually a pretty interesting background story. It are just recordings of people screaming. The recorded screams are those of people suffering from psychological illnesses in a mental hospital. Stalaggh was a project founded by some of the treating doctors in cowork with some underground producers. The patients were asked to scream all the pain, anger or desperstion dwelling inside them out of themselves as a form of group therapy. This was recorded and the result we can hear today. Some of the patients were interviewed later about the project and they described the experience as relieving.

Then, sub genres, for example in Late Romantic, you’ve got Impressionism, Exoticism, Expressionist. In 20th Century, you’ve got, Neo Classical, Primitivism, Folk-Classical, Minimalist, Atonal, 12 Tone. That’s just a few. There’s a ton more.

Another one that's been missed out is New Jack Swing. It was really popular in the late 80s and early 90s, and would share similarities with the instrumentals of Hip Hop songs of the time, but would often contain Vocals more similar to a pop or r&b song. An example is Janet Jackson's "Rythm Nation", or Michael Jackson's "Dangerous". It is characterized by industrial sounding, heavy and loud beats with smaller drum patterns in-between.

    • @badnrad
      @badnrad 2 года назад +4

Seriously, it was really an essential soundtrack from like '88 through '98+ because Teddy Riley was still churning out hits with Blackstreet. I think today many people got a taste of it when Bruno Mars and Cardi B came out with "Finesse" which of course borrows the instantly recognizable snare hits from "Poison" by Bell Biv Devoe and a recreation of the set from In Living Color for the video, which of course had it's own fantastic theme song. The syncopated rhythms between the bass, synths and drums provided such a broad foundation for producer's creativity and signature style. And utilizing more complex and catchy bass lines that melodically tie it all together was definitely the logical evolution from the poppy synth-funk era of the 80's as it blended into the hip hop and G-Funk era of the early 90's. New Jack Swing really deserves more recognition than it has considering how much it dominated pop radio for such a long time.

In the Balkans there is a style of music called Turbo-folk (Serbia), Tallava (Albania), Chalga (Bulgaria), Tsiftetelia/laïko (Greece), Arabesque (Turkey) and Manele (Romania). It is a mix of East European, gypsy, Middle Eastern and Balkan music.
It often features scantily-dressed women (or pimp-like men) performing belly-dancing. There are traditional elements in it (such as darbouka/zurna/sipsi/šargija etc.) usually mixed with commercial dance instrumentals.

Great video, extremely high effort, cannot imagine how long it took to edit this. I have some critiques though. K-pop and J-pop shouldn't be in the same genre section imo. And OST is referring to the "original" soundtrack, e.g. not songs appearing in the movie, but the sound played in the scenes, so most often without lyrics, so most popular examples being things like John William's and Hans Zimmer's pieces in star wars and inception respectively.

A good start. I have two thoughts.
    1) Some editing/fact-checking needed. Become open for submissions, perhaps via a spreadsheet, where fans or artists of a particular genre can submit a written description of what they believe defines the genres, it's history and the best 3 examples (including why they are the best).
    2) This isn't the ideal place to use the tier format because it jumps around so much. Consider grouping/presenting them by parent and sub-genres. This, semi chronological method will more easily highlight the influences and evolution from parent to sub-genre.
    But - I still love this :)

Also, there's way too much difference in volume between the music and the commentator's voice. Most modern music is compressed like crazy so everything sounds as loud as possible. It's unfortunate, but you have to run your voice through a similar compression effect, otherwise you have to keep changing the audio while watching the video, and that gets old real fast.

    • @egalomon

regarding 2) at the end of the day, this is an "iceberg" video, not a history lesson or a comprehensive guide. The iceberg formula puts things into these categories or tiers because at the top you have the "normal", well known entries and the further down you go, the more "out there", scary or incomprehensible the entries become. That's the whole point of the iceberg.
Going through the genres historically would be an entirely different premise and not fit the theme of "iceberg" videos.

I find that weird because Black Metal is a very deep genre; you could say Black Metal is the spiritual one, or the poetic one, whereas Death Metal is the materialistic one, the fleshy one, brute one. Both CAN be similar but definitely not the same genre, at all.
Just look at Inquisition or Lamp Of Murmuur, and then look at Cannibal Corpse, right?
But I can't complain! This video... Man *I NEEDED THIS*, it just proves me once again that I can never choose a specific genre and that all genres have brilliant gems that deserve to be worshipped.

However, heavy metal is actually a specific subgenre of metal that formed in the late 70s and early 80s, characterized by bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Diamond Head, and Saxon. Bodies, I Will Not Bow, and XO Tour are in fact not even metal at all, Master of Puppets is thrash metal, and Denny's is hardcore. Oh and also hardcore is a punk genre, not edm.

Problem is Hardcore is the name of like 3 genres. At least the I know. The rock stuff, the Breakbeaty early rave music and then the other Hardcore that's an evolution of that.

    • @Casketkrusher_
      @Casketkrusher_ 2 года назад +8

In the rave scene Hardcore is actually the faster and more aggressive form of Techno, could be merged with Gabber I think. And in the US and UK in the early 80's Hardcore was also associated with Punk, I could be wrong though.

As someone who listens to speedcore. You did a nice work selecting the tracks, specially Tool Assisted Speedcore which is one of the most famous tracks of the genre. Probably you could have added Galaxy Collapse by Kurokotei, with over 10M views on youtube. Speedcore has a big impact in rhythm games community, because you will find a lot of challenging maps using this genre

      "rhythm games community"
i do find it funny that both songs, yes very popular, aren't too common in rhythm games outside osu!
probs due to licensing; I've only heard about Galaxy Collapse in Pump it Up, and i've never heard of Tool Assisted Speedcore in other rhythm games

@@milesmonacothesequel2294 And how many of those are community-driven games? The fact that the most popular rhythm game is a community-driven one, in which licensing doesn't matter, does not mean all rhythm games are like that

This guy covered many psychedelic sub genres, but he seriously forgot my favorite genre psychedelic rock. Okay this is genre belongs in tier 2. Psychedelic rock is a form of psychedelic drug inspired rock originating in the mid 1960s, characterized by messy distorted drumming, vibrant sound scapes, prog and classic rock inspired guitar, keyboard, and bass, and heavy amounts echo/reverb. The most well known artists of the genre are: the The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, The Smashing Pumpkins, Mgmt, Sgt. peppers era Beatles, The Doors, 60s Pink Floyd, and some songs by Radiohead.

If you should try listening to DOPE LEMON if you don’t already. Not all of their songs are psychedelic rock but a few are. Maybe Coyote, Stonecutters, Honeybones, more. It’s psychedelic
Not sure if it’s rock.. but you should check it out!!

The flaming lips, tame impala, and mgmt would be more properly described as “neo psych” as they use computers to achieve effects and details that just standard instruments and equipment couldnt normally produce by conventional means

The genres in that tier aren't *super* obscure, really. Fits in pretty well since Riddim isn't exactly big and Doom Metal isn't very recognizable outside of Doom music.

    - Early americana : dixieland, stride, boogie-woogie, charleston.
    - The origins of pop : chanson, opérette, musical (we have few recordings but a lot of scores, and it is really vivid). With blues, this is the secondary component of jazz as from.
    - Latin music is much more than Bossa : Samba, Salsa, Calypso, Mambo, Cha-Cha, Foro, Latin Jazz.
    - Miscellaneous : Laptop folk, World Music, Repetitive (Glass, Reich, Mertens...)
