Plenty of reasons I need to get back into origami.
It requires piece of mind, tolerance, a willingness to accept mistakes, and most importantly, patience.
Naturally, it can help each and every one of these qualities to grow.
Yeah. I need to get back into it.
I also need to go back to origami...
I follow Jo Nakashima for what I consider some of the best origami model instruction.
There's a journey that starts with one piece, and after that piece is finished, the next begins. The patterns repeat over and over again till you understand what they are for and what they do. It's a never - ending journey with delights along the way.
The old man lets the young man find his own journey in his own work, although he leaves his own model and lamp to refer to if necessary.
Ultimately both will find mastership as they continue on their journeys, learning what works and what doesn't.
I was not concerned when it seemed the younger man was swallowed in the darkness. There is both yin and yang in the journey as well, and the light of yang shows through the dark yin, and the dark of yin makes the light of yang shine brighter. All part of the journey.
And then, there is the respite of tea time.
I think this story explains perfectly what it's like. And I follow people who have more mastership than I.
I do not pretend I can create my own unique forms. I am content to copy others' magnificent models.
What's even more impressive then the visuals, is the story. Wow, nice story telling.
The blackness is supposed to be his anger, caused by, let's name it: failure.
By working hard and always be a step ahead of it, he is able to keep calm and finish it.
The light is his mentor, and by following it he reached the final stage; doing it himself.
Wonderfull!
+Panta Gorian Judging by how the animation seems to have a sort of bias connotation against the protagonist's age group/new generation, I feel that the blackness symbolizes failure as you mentioned, as well as the uncertainty that young adults face as they come to age; Uncertainty, failure, inadequacy, anxiety, guilt, and in the context of a larger scale, the cruel world; all of which are things would have eaten him alive as it did to the dock/harbor. The black shadow is everything that young adults struggle with that the older folk have conquered. The lantern that literally guides him is the intelligence/wisdom/light of the elders showing him the way.
drowning / succumbing to negativity, . . . defeatism.
Malcolm Edwards I don't think defeatism is a word...... it's only defeat or defeated
@@jazyeh4112 amazing interpretation! I'm going to show this to my students of the same age as the boy to honor international origami day on sat
@@stephanie-qu5nk
Oh, you don't think? Indeed you don't!
Not only do you not think, even worse, in a time where information is at your fingertips via the internet you are too lazy to look up an expression before boring us with your uninformed guess work as to whether or not something beyond your rather limited intellectual horizon does or does not exist .
the darkness in our hearts, the lack of will to exert effort, is our greatest foe.
Big eyebrows= success
Ya say wot
foe 😂😂😂
Along with a heavy dose of fear.
I didn't understand
I always love the wisdom Japanese stories and art tell so creatively. It's beautiful
I hit this by mistake. One of the few mistakes I've made that I don't regret. There are probably thousands of interpretations to this but to me it means; wherever light goes, darkness is never far behind and sometimes it is best to make our own light and not rely on others to make it for us.
Indeed. Now, you have hit upon one of the greatest lessons in life; My interpretation of your interpretation is that one will be better cutting one's own wood for his fire, for he will warm himself twice. Put simply, be self sufficient.
This is so gorgeous. Not every story needs a punchline.. Some stories glide to a stop in your head, and this is one of them.
Morals....
Patience promotes Learning.
Anger hampers Learning.
Patience, Persistence and Perspiration are as important as Inspiration and Guidance.
Just to let you know, I watched this when I was real young, and ever since then, i've been inspired to make more, and better origami. Today, although I can't say I am really able to create such complex peices that form things such as dragons, bugs, or real life things, I am proud that I can make original designs, not of anything real, but of some sort of intricate, strange thing, and it's different every time. I will continue to hone my origami, as it is something I am really, genuinely proud of. This video was the start of it all.
Damn grandpa! What kind of drugs have you been slipping this kid! lol
b
Lol
Motivation
I agree with the guy that said “motivation”
I love origami. I'm very fond of this art. With a paper and nothing else ( no glue and no scissors ), you can fold that you want.
Looks like grandpa's cooked up some of his special tea.
Well shit gramps, that's one hell of an intense way to force your grandson to learn to fold paper, isn't it? XD
😂😂😂
I wouldn't mind the eyebrows so much if there wasn't such an indentation below them or they weren't so high up on the face they're not even eye brows anymore, they're just foreheadbrows.
+Hayden Havok I know, right?!
+Hayden Havok Fivehead brows even! LOL!
:) We need to start a movement.
#NumericalEyebrows
DOWN WITH FOREHEADBROWS!
thought that too. them eyebrows messed up his face
I love the steelpan used. Trinidad and Tobago created that sound and it adds real depth to this story. Super proud that you used it.
it's weird that people are commenting about the kid's looks, that's what they were focused on? the kids eyebrows? weird. Maybe with the green eyes and full eyebrows he is part Greek and learning from the Asian side of his ancestry? I mean who gives a shit this is a fantastic beautifully done story by some very thoughtful and talented animators and I thought the kid had a very expressive face.
It's not that they focused on the eyebrows, it's that they themselves were distracting, and did attract more attention to them than they should have.
1 mystery solved
A greek japanese person... the amount of badassatry in his heratige...
What if you're all wrong and the whole underlying moral of this animation was solely about greek eyebrows and the whole origami deal was just to distract you?
The eyebrows were just a strange thing in an otherwise beautifully done story. One has to wonder why the artist made such an odd choice on a facial feature of the main character when he had the ability and made the choices that produced such beauty and awesome visual affects in the story.
For a moment I thought the blackness was his lack of concentration getting to him, but I"m unsure.
It was really fantastic though...the eyebrows DID slightly throw me off but everyone must pay attention to the story :)
Those eyebrows....weird...
Yes, I think so, too. I only see it through a perspective of someone who's got ADHD. I've been suffering with ill-concentration skills all my life, but I get by. That's what I saw, because the willingness to work on the origami looked exactly like someone who wouldn't want to do it/who would perfer to do something else :p
+PaperVisage I think it was lack of enthusiasum. Frustration from doing something you don't want to do and the light is inspiration and finding the joy that the task can hold.
kevinnature Interesting interpretation.
I believed it was concentration as I suffer the conditions ADD and ADHD and concentration is always an enemy of mine that I gotta battle really often when it comes to given tasks.
Duck Duck Of course. It's just (pardon my french) a bitch to gain if you have ADD/ADHD. and it's got nothing to do with lack of willpower. It's like depression, a chemical imbalance....we are wired to struggle with concentration :p
The story is pretty simple. By smashing his dragon, he showed his hate for the model. The black goo trying to engulf him is his hate for origami and in order to get out of this "dreamworld" he has to show kindness toward his creations.
Krishna Girkar I think the black is ink. Once the ink touches paper, its ruined and you have to start all over.
His shadow turns I into the goo/ink stuff
I'm glad learning how to fold a piece of paper isn't actually that critical. ^^
+shrekfan92 Do you know the maximum number of times you can fold any piece of paper in half? Just a random factoid that may surprise you. Give it the old "College try" without cutting it or wetting the paper, just simply folding it directly in half one of these days, and send me back your answer. I've hopefully got more time than the protagonist in this story did and can thus wait patiently ;)
+Knolltop Farms The maximum is no more than 8, folding 40 times, which is impossible could get you to the moon.
I think the moral is just that when u are under pressure, you do great things that you normally couldn't do if you weren't under pressure.
to be honest i didnt even notice his eyebrows untill everyone started talking about them
delicious muffin of yum how??😂😂
same
Those aren't eye brows. Those are forehead brows 😂😂😂
Lol same !!
I really loved this. The idea, the story and the message: patience. I especially liked how the boy's guide changed its form. The only thing I'd question would be why the crane made the sound of an eagle XDDD - but aside that: compliment to the makers!
Moral? Unless I make a cool paper dragon like grandpa I'll be swallowed by ink.
The lesson on the story is how much hard is it just keep going and don't give up
Darsie Sumper nop it's about the negative effects of doing drugs
Or dont keep the top off the model glue.
Wow! This kid is impressive! He can fold the Ryujin dragon in a little less than 10 seconds! This film was awesome mixing film with my favorite hobby, origami
Jeeeeeez! Some people just can't watch and appreciate something without mindless blabber about specific details or other nonsense. You're not movie critics people. This is excellent the way it is. If you don't get it, DON'T WATCH! Eyebrows my ass. WTF????? If you don't have enough attention span to get past that, you should stick to watching Sesame Street if its still on the air!
hmph. great point you have there my friend
Mayuna Takakura
ok, sorry for it. I don't care much anyway, every animation has it's point. despite it's viewers you know?
Mayuna Takakura i think the eybrows have a point in the animation,in the start his eyebrows are down, close to his eyes.....at the ending they are way up,to his forehead, just like the old man.....as if saying that his knowledge increased "see with your soul not with your eyes" or something like that lol
MrAbsbvbsdfbsdfvbdab makes sense
shadow XIII thanks m8,great short animation movie
I think that it is symbolizing that creativity and imagination bring light to the world and drives away the darkness which symbolizes mans lack of aspiration.
They need to make a game. Not kidding, this animation would be perfect for a game. Different Than the other games yout there.
That's what I thought.
half okami half ico. My opinion
This is what I see in this: It could be about low self esteem and the lack of motivation to finish what one started or the struggle of never feeling accomplished. Then it leads to the battle of depression/anxiety, overcoming that battle leads to inner peace and a steady daily life. ^^
And that children is why you should never flatten an origami dragon.
Lazy Spark lol
Yes sir LOL
Ikr
LOL
I once flattened my origami dragon by putting it in my bag. RIP buddy. *ALSO GIVING ME SCP-1762 FLASHBACKS*
I like how the boy didn't take it seriously at first and learned how important it is after going through that terrifying experience. It taught him a lesson or made him wiser...and do better origami :)
I can see the Epilogue now
Kid: Grandpa you'll never guess what happened!
Grandfather: Hmmmm why don't you tell me all about it...
[two hours later]
Grandfather: What have I told you about folding Origami while using grandpas paper incense burners?!
Kid: I'm pretty sure those weren't incense in those paper burners grandpa.......
TheGamingTurret Later, the older brother comes in and asks the kid: Did you touch my stash of weed in the paper incense burners?
TheGamingTurret xD
XD
TheGamingTurret
I really loved this animation. He had to find his way through those obstacles by relying on the light and origami.
All I got from that is stay....
DETERMINED and never give up!
What a beautiful interpretation of the art of origami, which came to Japan via China. It is possible that it even predates Chinese traditions.
does anyone know how to make that dragon
+Saitama Z
Zbrush.
look on youtube how too make these.... you can...
One punch man !!! xd that dude xd
yes I do
look up the ryujin 3.5 it's very similar but there are more pleat folds and it has tessellations for the scales (also one of the most complex origami models out there. I'd rather do the ancient dragon which you can buy the book for it. it costs around 70$ though.)
I thought that It's a very wonderful movie, because it has been showed that to learn need perseverance and patience. And in a moment that the son started to be angry with his father because he needs to do an origami, so, he discovered that everything that happen in his life, he needed to be calm to solve the problem... to learn the best way to change the situation... Thanks. My son and I loved it the most. Congratulation!!!
Those EYEBROWS move on a god damn track
I have yet to be disappointed by Esma, this was wonderful.
That was really awesome!! BUT HIS EYEBROWS WERE SO DISTRACTING U3U
it really shows how wonderous learning is and especially how it feels when you finally get it right!
That was really well done. The story was great and exciting.
I think the same.
It should be called *PAPERTOPIA* \(O^O)/
I cried when I watched this, the visual effects and story telling was so well put together.
This movie is a piece of art ..I'm so amazed of that beauty .. awesome job, really well done :O
Those are some legit animating skills. Good job bro.
I really like the animation and artstyle but these damn eyebrow were driving me insane
IKR
WHY R THEY SO HIGH UP-
While there are some wonderful interpretations of the short story in the comments section. I would like to share my own version. I imagined the ink to be time which is soaking up the paper as it progresses. The boy has to constantly move forward until he finishes his work and to keep working even when the time is up, as shown in the end, when he completely drowns in the ink but finishes the task at hand and doing so gives him new purpose (dragon = success) to move forward. This interpretation is based completely based on my own situation, procrastination, laziness, lack of concentration and then finally the desire to be free. But after watching this amazing tale I feel I won't ever be free from my duties and there is a need to keep a clear head and perform the ongoing task to keep moving forward. This truly made my day. I am very thankful to the creators and the production company! I wish you immense success. ;)
This is EXACTLY like every single one of my dreams. Except my dreams never really come to a conclusion like this animation did...
Grandfather, you don't even know what crazy crap he had to go through to make that fantastic dragon!! 👍🏻 😮👍🏻💚😘👏🏻
There should be a game based on this.
All situations were created by thoughts.
Thus, we now mindfully create the moments in the future..
在這一刻有意識的創造未來的每一刻
Удачи вам и благ творчества!!!
You can overcome darkness if you're able to stay calm and focused. Steadfastness is what beats the shadow. Nice concept.
What a beautiful animation and I love the story and meaning behind it all. Thanks for brighting up my day. 😀
seriously catching the philosophy of mind that if u put ur heart and mind into it u can do anything
I need to share an origami anecdote.
We were having an "Induction of Class Officers" in the gym. They each gave us a paper wherein the oath for the class officers were written. While the presentation was rolling, I folded my paper into a paper crane. Some of my classmates were amused and they told me to do the same to their's. After that, they asked for the oath paper. We panicked, trying to quickly unfold it. We couldn't make it in time, so we just gave them the oath paper that was folded into an origami. The head of our Student Government asked us who folded these, and I admitted that I did. While the other class officers were leaving, we had to stay by the end of the program. There were other people (and they're from our Pilot class) who stayed too, for drawing and writing on the oath paper. She started to scold them and lecture them how this paper was going to be reused next year because our school needs to be "pro-environment". She also scolded us, asking us why they didn't stop me from folding them.
+Mysvious It sounds like they went to a better use then they could have ever dreamed.
+Mysvious Your anecdote is in half. What did the head of Student Government asked? D:
+EclipseSeth She also scolded us, asking us why they didn't stop me from folding them.(copied from the text, only the computer can show the full thing if its too long. ;)
I was on the computer. T^T
It's strange, it is happening now in various videos where the comments appear in half. :(
+James Lillie Nah. Making that many of the same origami is kind of wasteful. He could've just done it with useless paper or blank printer paper.
I would interpret this film this way: Kids these days should listen to the elders' advices! :D That is how the kid in the film survived moment to moment :) Loved this film btw.
the topic in this coment section is about eyebrows.-.
Ah, the gratification that comes with mastering craftsmanship should be the focus of what we take from this, rather than darkness. Pushing oneself and not giving into defeat for the sheer displeasure of the work it requires, for the frustration is but a part of the adventure! Those that run from that frustration only become eternally trapped within it, leaving life feeling incomplete and often miserable.
Light Dragon Vs. Dark Dragon, Light always prevails :P
Felipe De Villeres exept in death note
Or my life :P
Chup
Moral of the story ',,,,, The fear is the main subject...to nourish your talent and to make it perfection to its end....
I think it is more simple then that. Grandfather wanted to teach him a lesson. He showed anger so I think is more like yin and yang. The fight against light and dark in the end he nods and grandfather knows he learned his lesson.
what a beautiful film. so true. it is easy to let impatience, irritation, anger, the want for instant gratification to override us. it is easy to let it creep into our lives and before we know it we are unable to sit in silence, to contemplate things and to be patient. so nice
This is amazing!! The animation and flow is beautiful same with the sound effects and lighting!!!
**** you
wonderful tale - beautiful origami drawings. . .and that's how you become good at your work or craft - practice and dream. . . arigato 🌷
I love this. As someone who has done origami since I was 4, this reminds me of how origami has changed my life. It takes me to a new world, both metaphorically and physically. Well done!
I also did origami since age 4
I also did origami when I was 4
Conclusion 1: Don't do drugs kids.
Conclusion 2: Note on bucket list - do drugs when making origami...
And that my child is why origami is so important to us Asians!
Origami! Paper in disguise!
Is that a Transformers reference I detect?
Hannah Kavanaugh Yes, it is!
This feels like one of those surreal and artistically beautiful puzzle games.
DANG that boi is light as a feather
I like how he did not make the stereotypical origami crane!
Those eyebrows though!
that was utterly beautiful. no more words to say.
"Grandpa ... did you spike me with LSD again?" "errrr .... nope not me!" :)
The animation and music were both beautiful and soothing just like the Japanese culture and the story was a simple yet poignant of self discovery.
Speechless! Wow! Super impressive! Had to save it. Beautiful story line and illustrations. Loved it. Thank you so much.
Origami is something that comes from your mind and tests your patience.
His dad spiked his drink so he tripped out and found out his inner self
Lol ^w^
He didn’t have a drink
I love this! I can see the symbolism of the Ying And the Yang. between the luminary and the dark smokey cloud.
To me, it means --that even in the face of adversity, if you strive hard enough, you will achieve what you are trying to accomplish or solve.
Fear will only conquer you if you give up!
This was amazing. Great job!
Amazing. It was so beautiful and peaceful
A lot of women now have eyebrows like that. Nice Short.
That's really scary.
I really like the way the paper folding is animated. Very intriguing.
Those eyebrows xD best

DarkDragonOfDerpz u just got dat from chica, he/she commented that too
رسالة ان الظروف يمكن ان تجبرنا على التعلم للنجاح والنجاة طريقة جميلة للكرتون ليس المهم جمالية الرسوم بقدر اهمية روعة اخراج الفكرة .
I don't like the character design, especially the eyebrows! But anyway amazing story!
One of the most interesting piece of arts I've seen in 3D world. Please continue doing this. The 3D software is nothing if story is not good. :)
Those eyebrows are almost as distracting as the beard of that one amish women that comes into my town.
Holy shit those eyebrows
Story is about when one aims a design in his mind he decidesto go for that one. While searching his path for that design he has so many thoughts and negative ideas but at the last to prove his insight and with determination he achieves it :) :)
Those fukin eyebrows god there cool
This story would make a very good game.
wow you guys complain to much about the eyebrows i for one didn't even notes them until i read the comments and i still don't think they was that bad. i think it was a well done animation.
Aw c'mon, those eyebrows are dangerous.
Yes...origami has the power to remove all negative vibes
AND THAT KIDS IS WHY YOU DON'T DO DRUGS WHILE MAKING ORIGAMI
Magical to watch
Moral of the story? Be 'trippin to learn origami!
The most peaceful and positive moments I've spent since all this political unrest in America . Very much the fan keep up with the greatest work in your medium, period.
those are quite the eyebrows
im curious why they animated the track/trenches about his eyes where his brows move it looked quite strange
im watching as i comment it looks so weird
Ikr?!?!
Elizabeth Montgomery
yeah they bothered me so much im never watching this again
Elizabeth Montgomery
and im not usually that type of person
