I think the wheel helped. It gave them what they thought was a ledge to jump on, but they couldn't use it to get back up.

Agreed. I also think the tubes were too small. The mice seemed uncomfortable with their confines. Yet I wonder if the smell of the bait in the tubes helped draw them into the bucket. Would they have volunteered so readily without the peanut butter? God knows.

Yeah, plot-twist: we put the rolling-'log' in the _bottom_ of the trap.
I think it should be tested to find out if it really works like that.
This was so funny! The mouse really just wanted a safe secure home with a warm place to sleep, food and water, and a nice toy to play with. They jumped in voluntarily and just behaved.

Well that was interesting. Have used an empty bucket with grain in the bottom for years to catch mice. Maybe hold the tp tube in place with a couple of small nails to keep the mice from turning the tubes? Thanks for posting all these vids. Learned a lot!
Yup, these needed some sort of rails to keep them straight until they tip over. But then it isn't a simple TP core trap anymore.

Yeah, the whole idea was just plain tubes, no fiddling and tweaking.
@@teardowndan5364 Or a rack to hold the tubes, to keep them from being so easily dislodged sideways. Such a rack could be made from other TP tubes sliced in half and slightly pressed to widen them just a bit, and taped to the edge surface.
That’s what I’m thinking, a way to tip without losing the tube.
Did you put a board on a 45 degree angle from the floor to the top edge of the bucket for them to walk up, then jump down to the bottom of the bucket where the grain was? Thanks-
This video is a good demonstration of how intelligent mice are. The reason I started watching this channel was because the mice in my house figured out how to foil a spring trap. When I saw their activities on my security camera, I was amazed. Thanks for the video.
I believe they learn to be very wary of the regular snap traps and they pass that knowledge on to their young. So I have stopped using those. But do the mice that come to my house visit other houses? Maybe. If it was only mine then in 2 or 3 years I should be able to use them again. So far not. But nobody passes on knowledge of the rolling log trap and it still works fabulous.

This is so funny! They immediately started enjoying the running wheel. I know that mice are rodents, but they are so cute too! I use to catch mice in my house in a live trap and keep them in a hamster cage untill I got a bigger number and than I could take them away from home. I gave them water and food. After a day or two they all were waiting for me to give them food holding the bars with their little hands. They were not afraid at all. Sometimes I felt they use to come back just to get caught to be fed.
And they're goooooooooooood eatin'!

@@muskokamike127 This was in Poland, so one cares. 99% of the people just set normal killing traps. There are no laws regarding mice here. I cought them and every fiew days when I had enough I would drive away from my house and release them.
Some of those mice sound like ex-felons reoffending just to get taken care of XD.

This was one of the better trap and release mousetraps I have seen. This video was a joy to watch seeing that they had something to do while being trapped and that they willingly jumped in for the food and water.

Shawn has discovered that a mouse paradise is the best trap, once you get one in there they all want to join.
Shawn, you could put a needle through the bottom of the toilet paper rolls as sort of a teeter totter fulcrum, then tape the ends of the needle to the board. That way they can't move the roll out of place, but it will still tip them into the tank if they go inside it.
Sounds like a toothpick and a strip of sticky tape would fit the discription?

I think the tube method will still work. Maybe putting 4 small headless nails 2 on ether side as a guide will prevent them from rolling or being pushed around.
Maybe, but the whole point was a quick n easy trap that you could just grab one thing and go. If you start having to use nails and other setup, you're better off just using something else rather than trying to jerry rig this thing to get it to work.

If you're interested in making a slight adjustment, I would put blocks on either side of the roll so that it would be in a sort of chasm, and the mice would be forced to enter from the end you want them to.
I think those mice are the ones you have been letting go and they have come back just to get back into mouse heaven. 🤣

Had to laugh. I started snickering when the mice just pushed the tubes into the fish tank, but I was laughing out loud as they jumped in voluntarily, one after another!
What you had is the same concept as the "bucket of water with seeds floating on top". They climb the bucket, see and smell the food inside, and jump right in. I like the toilet paper tube idea but like you said they were just pushing them in
I thought that would happen. I wonder if gluing the tubes with a weak adhesive, such as flour and water, or securing them with drawing pins would make it more secure.
How about just a couple of nails to keep the rolls from being pushed side-to-side? Not very hard to imagine an easy solution.

i love the use of the tank in recent videos, I know mice are seen as pests and in extreme situations have to be killed, but I much prefer watching you release them back where they belong

I think this would work better with wooden baffles on either side of the tubes, but there are simply much better ways to catch mice. The tank along worked far better.
Proposal: Make two humane mouse tanks. Whenever you test a no-kill trap, set up one tank without the trap as a control. This sort of thing is why drugs have to be tested against placebos, since even placeboes sometimes have a nonzero effect on the body.
Similarly, the tank itself seems to have nonzero effectiveness as a mouse trap.

If 5 of the 6 mice simply jumped down voluntarily maybe try a 5 gallon bucket with a greased bottom/sides and peanut butter on the bottom as the bait. I think you had a similar video like this years ago.
I caught a few when the bucket I had sunflower seed in went down low.
Make fences in between cardboards to keep them straight, a fence than cardboard, another fence, another cardboard.
A few years ago I had an invasion of mice (I purchased a used dryer that was stored for about a year and had a nest in it) I caught 13 mice in 3 days with both TP and Paper Towel rolls into a large tote with about 1/2 inch of water, they couldn't jump out but lived and I was able to let them out in a field behind my house.
Since they didn't get in your house the regular way but got carried in in grand style, I guess it was okay to let them go in the field. But when they find their own way in you need to take them for a long ride or put water in between you and them.
How much do wild mice love running wheels? Once they get addicted to them, you don't need food to entice them:
When I was young, I kept fancy mice as pets. I caught a wild mouse and put it in with the fancy mice. It loved the wheel. However, when I was cleaning tanks one day, it escaped.
After I was done cleaning tanks, I had an extra tank, which was empty except for the wheel. I had left the two encyclopedias on top, which I had been using to hold down the screen. There was a gap between the encyclopedias.
Much to my surprise, I heard the wheel spinning one night. I tiptoed up, then sprang for the cage to close the gap. The wild mouse was caught again thanks to its love for the wheel! 🤣

Build some dividers, similar to what you do for snap traps. This will force the mice to attack from one side and it will not give them any ability to spin the trap.
hot glue with pop sticks standing on edge to the plywood so they can't spin the tubes. Each tube has its own guides.
glue some wooden runners either side of the tubes so it looks like highway lanes to stop the tubes from moving sideways.. great video as normal Shawn

This is one of my favorites. I really like the simple, but effective DIY designs. I would suggest using a longer roll from paper towels and placing bricks or rocks on each side of it instead of flattening it.
I just about had hysterics watching those wild mice jumping into the tank to get the food and water. I note the majority preferred to jump onto the wheel rather than all the way to the bottom.

The rolls works. Try using the long tubes if you are having your issue.
Also, put up guards on the side so they can't push or go around it and they have to fall in just to look at the food.

They love the mouse paradise so much that it's a trap all on its own.
You need to put some pins in alongside the tubes to stop them moving sideways.
Try making a jig with a plywood base and a bunch of vertical walls with just enough space between the walls for the tube, then lining them all up. That way they can't push the tubes around.
He left the botfly! Botfly removal is the most fun part of a video.

I think if you put walls along the sides of the tube that would stop them from moving them and should encourage them to enter the tube
I really enjoy the videos with the fish tanks. They allow us to see and observe the mice in a way we couldn’t before in past videos.
At this point, you could just have the tub with the 2 boards and just put bait inside somewhere, snd just have them jump in out of curiosity

Using the the tube of kitchen paper towels may be a better idea because of its length.
Try it by taking a tube cut in half length wise then staple it to the board, then the bait tube into the half round holder tube.

Some very funny fails! Mice that fall in end up really enjoying the little "Mouse Agility Course!"
It was kinda funny how one of the mice were running on the wheel and the other jumped on it and got slammed on the floor.
The funniest part of the video was when they jumped down and landed on the spinning wheel. I know it's hard to see at night but I guess it did lessen their fall.
A little tape on the underside of the tube to the top of the tank, to act like a hinge, would help the trap work.
If I can’t catch any of these guys in my house within the week, I might as well try this- mice in a pet tank that is!!
Aside from the food and water, it seems like a “monkey see, monkey do” scenario. They saw the others in there and must have thought it was safe.
Last week we found one trapped by my husky on the other side of the house behind a bookshelf. There’s signs in the kitchen which is where we had one last year. I’m glad we kept our humane traps too! Wish me luck!🍀

You could keep the tubes in place by gluing something on either side of a tube, or maybe by just using four push pins.

You could place small pieces of something on either side of the each TP roll in order to prevent it from rolling sideways or rotating.

Am wondering if you could add a Sellotape hinge at the balance point? it'd stop them rolling away, being pushed in and also self reset once it has been triggered. Would be ok for a dry barn, not so good for outdoors in the wet.

I think if you made rigid (or semi rigid) walls between each tube to keep them from being moved or accessed from the sides, while allowing them to still tilt and fall, that would probably work well.
Take your table boards and add vertical spacers just wide enough to hold the tubes. Could probably just cut pieces of cardboard; only has to keep the mice from pushing them off too soon or getting at their front.
Why not try lining the top edges with corrugated roofing where the tubes sit in each valley.

Ha,ha!I use small havahart mouse friendly traps and in the past caught many a field mouse in them.i used to breed them as pets.i still have five wild mice,all female,one male and two were actually born in captivity,and they actually make excellent pets.their names are Wanda,venture the male mouse,tiny, Emma and Tabatha.very neat trick you use.matter of fact all of them have tubes they hide in.🐀🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
Use a small amount of blue tac to weakly hold the tubes there but as the bucket trap showed many dive in if they know food is there
i think it would have worked with a duct tape hinge, may not reset but i think it could still work
Slightly bigger tubes might help, paper towel ones I believe are the same, but wrapping paper ones might be bigger. Cut 'em with scissors.

I believe the tube should be more flat on the bottom. To many of them rolled before the mouse had the chance to attempt to enter the tube. Also maybe a little tacky something on the very edge of the tube that is on the table and scoot them out just a hair more off the edge "maybe". The tacky stuff will help keep it from rolling maybe not sure if it is really needed if the tube bottom is good and flat. But if it is just the right tackieness it would allow you to have a better over hang and it would give under their weight more suddenly. Just some thoughts.
I have used this before I just kinda made it up. I used a paper towel roll. Cool to see you cover it!

In think you could improve the toilet paper trap by placing some duct tape on it. Thus it may be auto-reseting once the mouse drop, and may not move when mice are around. Basically a walk the plank with some things everyone has.

You need to add a little tape at the end !!!!!
That will prevent it from moving. Not too much, because it has to be enough to let go of the mouse weight.
Extend the tube further over the ledge and put a small piece of rolled tape under the back the hold the tube steady until the mice enter. Their weight will release the tape and the tube will fall.
I think the one with the botfly should have been humanely dispatched, good job though :))
How about a thread or string attached to the roll to bring it back up without putting your hand down with mice?

Longer tubes from rolls of paper towels work much better. That worked perfectly for me to make a quick improvised trap to get a known mouse out of my house.
