  • Watch how you can give your mantle a makeover with no sanding! Step by step video--materials listed below as well as where to purchase them! Thank you for watching! If you would like to see more videos, please like and subscribe!
    Materials (As shown):
    Brillo Basics reusable wipes
    Gloves (heavy duty are best)
Face mask (optional--I ended up not using one.)
    Drop cloth
    Goggles
    Scouring pads
    Painter's tape (highly recommend Frogtape!)
Sander/deglosser (I used the brand Klean Strip from Lowe's.)
    Paintbrushes: amzn.to/2pIYQtO amzn.to/2rbVxft
Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 Primer (I ended up not using a primer, because my paint was paint + primer in one.)
Minwax Water Based Polycrylic Protective Finish (semi-gloss)
Olympic Assure Paint + Primer (semi-gloss in Ultra White)
    220 grit sand paper
I purchased the reusable wipes, gloves, drop cloth, and scouring pads from the Dollar Tree. I had the face mask leftover from a previous project. The goggles, sander/deglosser, primer, protective finish, paint, and sand paper were purchased at Lowe's. The paintbrushes were ordered from Amazon, and the painter's tape was purchased from Wal-Mart.

I would use the Zinser 123 Primer + Chalk paint(flat) + General Finishes Top Performance Flat (3 coats with 400 grid light sanding in between coats). Semi gloss might be a bit much since the mantle is kinda big. I recommend this top coat because it has just the right amount of sheen. The final finish is between flat and egg shell.

I would have used two coats of a regular primer first and then two coats of a semi gloss white paint but this looks great as well. Only suggestion would have been to caulk the cracks and gaps before painting.

How well does the paint hold up after running the fireplace for some time? Any issues with paint peeling or soot accumulation?

So I have a question. I really liked your video. So just to get this clear I will do two coats of paint+primer semi gloss then after I do that I sand it down and do two coats of polycrylic protective finish semi gloss ?? I looked at a lot of DIY videos and loved how your fireplace turned out!!!!

Question why did you use the polycrylic? I’m wondering if I should use it because after I painted it seems like my paint will easily scrape off

I used it to seal my paint and so that it will hold up better against normal use since it’s painted. You don’t have to use it if you’d rather not. I just wanted extra protection.

Looks great! there are 2 brushes, can use anyone with any paint or are they specifically used for a different purpose?

musharraf ashraf The angled brush is more useful for awkward/narrow spots & corners. I ended up liking the finish of that brush more as well. It seemed smoother than the other one.

Should it be deglosser, paint, primer then polycrylic?

Why in the world would you cover over the nice looking wood? My fireplace mantel and surround was painted glossy white and I hate it. I'm going to strip it off.

The brown wooden fireplace is a very outdated look. A lot of people paint them nowadays to modernize the room. A large chunk of brown wood like that can also close in a room, make it look smaller and darker and can create an eyesore in an otherwise bright room. Depends on the look you're going for. I can see the dark wood making sense in maybe a more rustic style room.
