@@micahbush5397 Hippeus are in some way are all Horsemen/horse owning soldiers, however Spartan and some other Greek Hippeus would prefer to fight dismounted. The Practice of owning a Horse or a Chariot just for transport and fighting on foot is pretty common, Briton Nobles Riding on Chariot before dismounting to fight on foot, to Celtic & Germanic Tribes having Lightly Armored Warriors hitching a ride from a Horsemen.

There's a reason why Heavy Infantry would have their own transports rather than Skirmishers, as mounted Skirmishers are basically just Horse Archers/Skirmishers. A More similar comparison would be Tanks Having Juggernaut Soldiers sit on top.

new dlc is coming out about the athens/sparta/Achaemenid war in ancient greece. the 3 new factions are only going playable in single player and unranked.

@@Spiror mike's vids are some of the worst to decide if a unit is good or not lmfao, they killed mangudai, so i guess now mangudai are trash? their role is clearly a tank in the front line used to soak up attacks, that paired with one of their unique techs that decreases bonus damage from units by 33%, AND having a polemarch near them (15% faster attack rate), means theyre the civ's tank unit, with other units surrounding them used as support to deal damage. not every unit in aoe2 is meant to be good on its own, and thats fine, i like the need to pair units together to make them better, also cant forget theyre only 60f/30g, compared to teutonic knights 85f/30g, and huskarls 80f/40g, so theyre MUCH cheaper than the units ppl are comparing them too. at the end of the day, we need to see them in action in order to decide if theyre good or not, thats my point.

The Hippeus are technically "Horse-owning" but they doesn't always fight on horseback, which a quite common concept of Mounted Infantry.
@@saffron5802 Yep, it's a common tradition where Royal Guards are mounted Troops, from the Roman Celeres(Roman King's Bodyguards), to Macedonian Hetairoi. Having a mobile bodyguard units who can ride out with you and fight on foot are quite important for your protection.

I agree that it's confusing, but it's also historically accurate. The Spartan royal guard were called "Hippeis", yet they exclusively fought on foot.
