    This episode covers the 1940 German invasion and conquest of Denmark as part of Operation Weserübung. Denmark didn't resist for too long, just under six hours, but the soldiers of Denmark were willing to do their duty against the Germans. Their helmets were also the best in human history.

    When I visited Denmark, our museum tour guides all mentioned that Germany treated Denmark incredibly well. The German soldiers did not loot or misbehave; they simply patrolled like any other law enforcement entity. Our guides said that Germany basically used Denmark as a symbol of how cooperation benefits nations, and the two sides had a "false friendship" going until 1945.

    • @limesebastian
      @limesebastian 3 года назад +142

      I'd add to that, that obviously the Danes didn't like the arrangement, but for the good of the country they had to accept German presence, and until large scale protests erupted in August 1943 Denmark did get to manage its own affairs - as long as it was approved by the Germans of course. After the protests in Aug 1943 and an ultimatum directly from Hitler, the government stepped down and the police and military was disbanded - deported to concentration camps - and the Danish Jews who had until then been allowed to carry on were hunted down on October 1. Almost all of them had luckily been transported to safety in Sweden by then. The Nazis would implement the same harsh conditions as in other occupied countries, and Denmark was de facto without a government from then on as resistance towards the occupiers grew.

      Not reallly - the army wasnt allowed to fight. The Germans expected the Invasion of Norway to fail if they didnt take Jutland in a day. Had the fighting not been stopped long before the Germans had even advanced to Vejle where the Jutland division was setting up the main defence line I dont think they would have been able to do that. The little fighting that did take place mostly consisted of a series of ambushes from unprepared positions along the German routes of advance rather effectively buying time for setting up defences further north.
      Had we kept the forces we mobilized when Poland was invaded and prepared defences there is no way the Germans would have been able to achieve their objectives in time for them to matter, which would have prevented the invasion - they only invaded because they needed Jutland as a stepping stone to invade Norway.

    What I consider funny is that more Danes died fighting the Soviet Union alongside the germans, than fighting Germany for their own country during WW2. After the occupation, thousands of volunteers joined the Free Corps Denmark and participated in multiple battles on the Eastern Front. Something very similar happened in Luxembourg. It is funny because usually you hear something like: War never gets you anything and both sides just end up losing, but Germany actually got more men fighting for her after she invaded some countries, than what she would had got if she had not. (Even with all the resistance groups on these countries, the volunteers actually outnumbered them, even if the majority of the population hated them. Only at the very end of the War when it was clear that Germany had lost, the resistance groups grew bigger than the volunteers.)

You are still occupying eastern Denmark and were only able to hold on to it because peace terms was dictated by European great powers who didn't want to same country controlling both sides of Øresund.

    • @dschledermann
      @dschledermann 5 лет назад +36

      @Fädernesland sure sure, you kicked a lot of ass (just not for 500 years as you stated). Scania was definitely being spilt from Denmark because the great powers was not going to allow the same kingdom controlling both sides of Øresund. This is a fact. It is also the reason why Sweden was not given the opportunity to absorb all of Denmark, even if it very much was able to at several points, unifying all of Scandinavia under the swedish crown. This would have been equally unacceptable to France, Russia etc.
      This is all before the formation of the modern political systems, so it's bit moot by now. Of course this may have been omitted in the swedish history lessons, but try to do a bit of research into how the old norwegian and danish provinces became swedish. A century of torture, executions, ethnic cleansing. Proud of that?

      Fädernesland Denmark and Sweden have had 144 years of war with each other. However Sweden more or less invented the concept of a national army and its structure plus they had natural resources to produce cannons etc. Once they got the manpower advantage too. It was kind of over. Added with the fact that we had Danish Kings who had a talent of being fools when it came to international Affairs. But Sweden would never been allowed to absurb Denmark. A combined Scandinavian Kingdom with a Streamlined nobility loyal to one King would have shifted the powerbalance of Europe to much.

    The "Was Denmark occupied" question is a really interesting one. There are many different ways to define occupation, for example the full annexation of the Sudentenland, the partial annexation of nations such as the rest of Czechia into german-ruled territories, the National-Socialist (but otherwise Norwegian) government put on Norway. Denmark was unique in that the government continued otherwise uninterrupted with fully democratic elections up until the (failed) actions against the Danish Jewry much later in the war; at which point Danish bureucrats were put to serve rather than the Danish Nationalist Socialist Party like in Norway.

    At the outbreak of WWII in September 1939 the Danish Army had been partly mobilised but when asked the British answered that no help could be expected in case of a German invasion and the army was demobilised again and all plans to establish defensive positions in S. Jutland were given up. That decision no doubt saved many lives, but it has since been argued that the Government should have realised the invasion of Denmark was a stepstone to the invasion of Norway and resisting longer, especially at the strategically important airbase at Aalborg in N. Jutland, might have had the Germans fail in Norway. Danish military personell felt 9th of April 1940 as a huge disgrace, and in a strange logic some even volunteered for the SS to fight on the Eastern Front - just to show that they could fight! For decades after WWII "Never a 9th of April again" was the theme of Danish security policy and membership of NATO.

They could lose vast numbers of civilian and soldier lives and suffer under brutal oppression after losing, or they could accept the reality that they didn't stand a chance and surrender. They even got concessions, of all things. Not something to revere, as surrender is still bad, but also not something to just make fun of. It's a joke we like to tell, but it's not fair to either France or Denmark to laugh at them for not being able to stand against the military might of a blitzkrieg. Germany took multiple world powers fighting for many years to finally stop; putting that on the shoulders of Denmark isn't reasonable.

      Well, France cannot be compared here.
      The nation did fight, and on paper at least had its chance. This is more about a huge strategic blunder than anything else, as to everyone surprise (germans included) the german battle plan was the exact counter to the french one, and germany ended up encircling and cutting the supply lines of the french army after "minimal" (still at ww1 rate per day) casualty rate against second rate troops left behind by the french.
      But we are speaking about a 6 weeks battle, a century ago. A century before that it took 19 days to the french army to bulldoze its way to Berlin and plant the french flag. Western europe isn't that big a place.

    Nice coincidence, I just watched the Danish film "9 April" about this very event. I have to say, I find the Danish army helmets kind of fascinating, they remind me of the ones worn by the Death Star gun crew. The Danish motorcycle infantry jumpsuits were also somewhat Star Wars-y. Or maybe Ghostbusters-y.

    King Christian X was pretty badass during the occupation. He was able to walk around Copenhagen like he owned the place. There are stories of him walking up to a German soldier and demanding that a German flag be lowered and a Danish one be raised. The soldiers said no and said any soldier or person the King sent to replace the flag would be shot. The King then politely said he'd be that soldier. The soldier immediately screwed off, intimidated.
