Been in Canada since 2000....I can remember when saturday night in Bolton town centre ,was almost as busy as Manchester........Scamps ...Rockerfellas....Space City ...Then Bolton supper bar.....oh the memories ha ha
Wow, what a lot of time and effort putting this clip together, thanks for that!!! One of the pics that I really loved and was suddenly thrown back into 1972 was the pic of the market hall (at 3 minutes 44 seconds on the clip). You would come out of the market hall, and there were some steps facing you that you would go down to get onto Bridge Street itself. Come out of the steps and you would be at the bus stops. Carry on down the steps and you would be in smelly Bridge Street bogs :)
@@bwfc_sam7360 I live in Bolton. I think most of the people who send these videos have been to Bolton, live in Bolton, lived in Bolton. I have no idea where I will be when I grow up, because I know Eccles and Bolton are a lot different than they used to be. I said Eccles because that is where I lived when I was born up to the age of 2 then me and my family moved to Bolton because people from Salford moved into Eccles and now Eccles is different too...
The sad fact is that 30 + years ago Bolton was one of the best towns in the UK but now it's one of the worst, How the government has turned things around ! If My grandparents & great grandparent's could see the demise of the town they once lived & loved 😥
I think the photo of Bolton station was taken in the wrong direction. The clock tower is still there but it is near the bus stands in front of the current building rather than on the bridge where the later photo was taken.
The old station was demolished and a new one built where it is now in about 1986, they took the clock tower apart and rebuilt it in its current location at that point. When you go down the stairs to the platforms there's a big empty space before you get to the buildings on the platforms, that space is where the old station was - the road above was widened when the station was rebuilt.
What year was the last building demolished where the shopping centre is now? It didn't look too bad in 1990 but I guess it must have burned down shortly after that pic was taken.
Sadly it's the same building and no fire was involved. In about 2005 the company that owns the Market Place decided to redevelop it to how it is now. Everyone really liked how it used to be and it was always busy. There were campaigns at the time to try to stop it, but the council allowed them to go ahead. It's not been the success they hoped.
Hi Stu, you sole me my tent in 1995 and some mess tins.. still got tent and tins.. I miss that shop.. most excellent place. This is where most towns went wrong.. too many chains and no independent shops.. Does nobody understand that if your town has all the same shops as everywhere else there is literally no reason to leave your hometown,, and since when did voting for some lackey from a national party make sense?.. they ain't going to ever represent you (Not you Stu.. I mean the "everybody you")
I do miss bolton water place though I was scared of the wave machine and that slide next door to the main pool that dropped you off in a so called rapids that was more like a second wave machine. I didn’t know what I was meant to do in the wave pool, I’d never been told the idea was to swim with the wave machine. I remember the guy saying the waves are about to begin in 5 4 3 2 1. Somehow I doubt anywhere would be allowed a wave machine like that these days that took you round that little section at brute force as that did. Once mum let go of me while they were on and me as a child not knowing what I was meant to do I was pulled under by the wave nachines current. Mum pulled me back up right away. I once swam against the wave machine literally on the spot trying to get to the side. I was determined the waves were not going to take me round and though I was just swimming on the spot I still beat the snot out it til a life guard said you are best just going with the waves or you’ll just get tired. I told him no. My sister even tried to help me get back to the side. When the guy came on again that day stating the waves are about to begin in before the countdown I grabbed the side. Tiurned out the guy in charge of turning the machine on and off liked to leave the machine on til everybody had been taken round the back of the pool. I refused to let go of the side though and he did turn it off. I swamthough it when the waves were off though due to my sight impairment the “holes” under water frightened me. I can’t see the bars where the waves come out in wave pools all I see is a huge black hole going all the way round.
Bridge Street 1952 is incorrect. The older pagoda is on the Co-op building. I was born in 1949, and my earliest memories would be from about 1952. The second pagoda was there by then.
I guess you're right, because there are quite a few murders and crimes around Bolton... Gosh.. Bolton is definitely a lot more different than I anticipated
Shame majority of this will be getting knocked down soon......history just crumbled for financial gains real shame I always felt bolton thrived off the olden modern age look of the town , sadly it's becoming a town for students and migrants no longer the days of self employed business men taking over the streets of bolton. My great great uncle would be so ashamed and upset too see bolton become what it is today.
Really enjoy seeing 'then and now' photos, thanks for sharing. Alas, Bolton was once a great, vibrant town. Sadly, no longer :(

Thanks for these - they brought back a lot of memories. I was born and brought up in Farnworth but I knew Bolton well.
it breacks my heart to see it as i use to know it, why couldnt they just leave it as it was, i was born in 1960.
Love the music 💓💓💓💓💓
What a nice music 🥰 !!!!!!
My Grandfather was born in Bolton and came out to Australia in the 20s,
such a shame all the soul has gone out of Bolton as the large franchises have replaced the independent shops
You have to get out of Bolton to appreciate it. I've been living in Canada for 5 years and I miss Bolton with all my heart.

Labour council
Even the shops that were "now" a decades ago are nearly all gone.

The new town is characterless with a few exceptions.

the place has no character now.
I used to be proud of the town I’m from. Place has really gone to shit.
Anyone notice the lack of tree's in the old day?
Went in town on Thursday I think there was more homeless & beggars than there was shoppers.
I live just off Lever Street, what a shit hole the place Is now 😞 So sad!
so many traditional and beautiful buildings lost and gone forever what a joke
Now an absolute dump brought on by Cliff Morris & the traffic wardens & no that’s not a music band or pop group!
Didn't they do ' Money, Thats What I Want' 😂😂
Bolton as become a joke.
God Bolton, has gone downhill, a lot of wonderful buildings are gone.
Bolton where all the crime is.... Lovely
