Lyrics:
Stand!
In the end you'll still be you
One that's done all the things you set out to do
Stand!
There's a cross for you to bear
Things to go through if you're going anywhere
Stand!
For the things you know are right
It's the truth that the truth makes them so uptight
Stand!
All the things you want are real
You have you to complete and there is no deal
Stand! Stand! Ooh!
Stand! Stand! Ooh!
Ooo ooo stand!
You've been sitting much too long
There's a permanent crease in your right and wrong
Stand
There's a midget standing tall
And a giant beside him about to fall
Stand! Stand! Ooh!
Stand! Stand! Ooh!
Ooo ooo stand!
They will try to make you crawl
And they know what you're saying makes sense and all
Stand!
Don't you know that you are free
Well at least in your mind if you want to be
Everybody
Stand! Stand!
Stand! Na na na na na na na na na nah
Stand! Na na na na na na na na na nah

I play this song almost every day in the physical therapy gym and it always makes me cry! I had a stroke four months ago and was paralyzed on my left side. So when my therapists tell me to STAND! I put this song on and then I can do it, with tears streaming down my face! I love sharing this song with everyone else, too! We are all trying hard to stand! I'm in a rehab hospital right now and this song is very powerful! ❤️💪🏼💪🏼
Sending healing thoughts and power to you!! Love this song and it is my favorite go to when I am depressed.
All the best to you during your rehad. God Bless You.🙏🏿☺🙏🏿
Hope your getting there
Our minds and bodies are amazingly-fragile, yet amazingly-RESILIENT! Our brains have a type of plasticity that cannot be beaten. I acknowledge your struggles, your losses, your efforts, your accomplishments, and your VICTORIES. Do whatever you can to encourage the innate neuroplasticity that is in dynamic action, now and always. This song is a great piece of inspiration to me, as well - and also within the exact same environment as you're in - when I had to relearn how to walk [and talk], years ago. Your post hits-home in a completely unexpected way today. Thank you for sharing - and while there may be a few plateaus, there will always be an ongoing recovery-process which will surprise you.
Your an inspiration to us all . Keep on Standing. Everybody.
what wonderful lyrics....just as true now as they were in 1970....STAND!

I'm just turned 69, Stroke survivor, taking Chemo and still Dancing and Singing to these Classics!😊
Glad you survived your stroke and keep on dancing as much as heart desires..By the way, this is my favorite Sly And The Family Stone song
@@alangreen7149 Thanks Alan, so many Favorites from the 70s! I really would like to see a musical venue that could continually play all the great Sounds for this generation. I feel like they are really missing out on the Real Musicians we grew up with!☺️
The funkiest last 48-seconds of a song with killer syncopated-horns slammin' high-hat and guitars!!!! (Someone needs to extend that ending.)
Great sound indeed!
It's been done, many times. Sly & the Family did quite often on stage... some long sessions of this wonderful noise.

I just pointed out those lyrics to my wife....lol
This is my song for my upcoming Strike at work. If you don't stand for something, You will fall for anything.
TRUTH!! And my Pastor says that ALL THE TIME!
Don't fence sit and spectate, take up your cause and participate!
'Cuz if don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.
Before Earth Wind and 🔥 It Was Sly and Family Stone. CAN YOU DIG IT.
Can we all just appreciate that these songs were made
I sure as hell do!! Masterpiece!!!
Yes!
I sure can.
Sylvester Stewart is a creative, musical genius! Sly wrote lyrics that made you think about life and your purpose here on earth! He questions what you as a human being are doing to help your fellow man and woman. Do you stand up for truth and justice and equality for all people? STAND FOR THE THINGS THAT YOU KNOW ARE RIGHT PEOPLE!!
I loveyou.
Even all these decades later the lyrics of the song are still powerful. Different era but same problems still plaguing us. God bless you Sly
✨🎶✨🙌✨🎶✨
You are so right!
TO THIS "PARTY HIT CLASSIC" BLOGGER, MANY THANKS TO "SLY & THE FAMILY STONE'S MOST SELECTED HIT SOUL: STAND [1970]," AND Y'ALL, "LONG TIME HIT FANS, ENJOY YOUR LOVELIEST PARTY CASSIC"!! 😸😸

Such a beautiful song! The only problem is that it is not long enough!
It really is a beautiful song. A certain time/place in humanity.
Yeah unfortunately those 45’s (single songs) back in the day only lasted about two and a half to three minutes long
This most beautiful song was not just perfect for that time, it is PERFECT for these times.......and that is kind of sad. But shows the genius of Sly.
Yes, we are in such peril in the entire world 🌎 and people need to hold our righteous indignant leaders to be held accountable!
How True That Is ♦💯❇
Music at the time got our minds off of Vietnam and politics. Today it blocks out those bad things but evokes the good memories of it. And yes such a message is sorely needed now.
@@ayndowney9401 perfectly stated✌️😗👍
@Ken Shaw. Truth. Same with The Temptations Ball of Confusion. I find comfort in this music we were so BLESSED to come up with. 🙏🏼♥️☮️🕊
This was when we had several musical geniuses coexisting and dominating. Most bands had to be good. This group just happened to have one of the most prolific writers and performs as their leader. The Family Stone makes you dance, cheer and just about everything else when they are on point like this. Everybody stand!
This isn't necessarily a racial equality song, but it could be if u wanted it to be. David vs Goliath & David being victorious! Wish they were still together. This kind of inspiration would be welcome today!
@@ericdreizen1463 It is about standing up for yourself, whether expressing yourself or standing up against tyranny.
Straight up........ Straight up.
This brings me back to my teenage years. I will be 68 in August. Even after more than 50 yrs., this song is significant today.

1956 here … I’m definitely stuck in a musical time warp - I’ll never stop listening to one of the greatest musical eras ever.
What a time it was!
In this day and age, "Stand" is a clarion call: "STAND! You've been sitting much too long; there's a permanent crease in your right and wrong"! Tell it Sly!!
Yes!!
Right On!!
Preach!
Way ahead of his time that Sly Stone!!!...such prophetic messages in his music 🎶and their story is just as tragic 💔😪
Aw, bullshit. Always was a damn good song though.

Great music! He was way ahead of his time. Sly Stone's words have even more relevance today. Genius
I'll say it right now... Sly was a genius
Still gives me chills after all these years. Great funk & strong lyrics. Love

Gregg Erico performs one of the sickest drum intros I have ever heard and sets the tempo for a truly great song. Gregg is a very under rated drummer in the greatest band ever! ✌️
One of the best drummers to ever put it down!!

After 2:15 it was Hal Blaine he was brought in later to over dub the drums
I love how the whole song is so strong and upbeat, and then the break is so funky, big switch-up of the beat
God Bless Sly. Thank God we had those times.
I hear you loud and clear
Exactly. Good things come to those who wait.
Yes, exactly.
I was eleven years old when this song came out. But I didn't discover it until I was about thirteen, my freshman year of high school. My history teacher, Mrs. Fox, a middle aged white woman, played and analyzed it for us in class one day. I went to a racially mixed high school in Michigan. Mrs. Fox was, I think, in her 50s. She had a couple of grown kids, I think a son had been to Nam. You'd never know by her looks, but this white woman was straight radical. This was late 1970, early 1971. Her favorite phrase was, "do not grow up to be a spineless jellyfish". I'll never forget her saying that, constantly. Speak up and speak out. So, this middle aged white woman who I assumed listened to old Sinatra and maybe Perry Como songs, decided to teach the class the art of standing up and standing firm, through a record by Sly and the Family Stone. "Stand". There are some days at school you never forget, no matter the grade, class or year. This was one of those days. Mrs. Fox played that record and stopped it after every line, to make sure we knew exactly what Sly was saying and what he meant. In short, Sly was saying, "don't be a spineless jellyfish". I lost touch with Mrs Fox, but I'll never forget that middle aged, radical white woman. She believed everyone had balls and they'd better damn well use them. Authority was sometimes just another way of saying 'in the way.' Next to my parents, she was one of the most radical adults I listened to on a constant basis in my youth. And I never had a class with her after my freshman year. But that one year with her was unforgettable. She was ahead of her time in questioning our U.S. History classroom books. If I remember correctly, she had mixed feelings about Nam, and her kid being there. I'm 65 and retired now, but I'll never forget that day middle aged Mrs. Fox brought to class a recording of the greatest song ever written and performed. Thank you, Mrs. Fox
Aw man, what a great story! I really enjoyed reading it. Teaching is also about expanding awareness and critical thinking and she sounded like an amazing teacher. Thank you so much for sharing!

In early 69, the Family Stone gave us this hit song. There lyrics had meaning. They were the first of the funk bands!
This is what I hear when I consider giving up. Nope ! Stand.
Perfect!
I was five years old in 1969 when I heard a neighbor blast this from his apartment windows wide open. I stopped playing and just stood there to listen. Sly had me. The next artist that did that was in 1971, Marvin Gaye's masterpiece 'What's Going On'. That was blasted from my parent's apartment window. :-)

If the last 50 seconds of this song doesn’t make you get off your feet and dance, you have no Soul. This song is perfect, the lyrics and composition. “There’s a permanent crease in your right and wrong.” It’s pure eargasmic. All the original members are alive except Cynthia. I would to see them run it back one more time.

Radio seldom plays this since it was not a top 10 so some years ago bought a 45. Spring, 1969 what great memories this left.
This was when people, my generation, were sick and tired of all the wrongs that we faced everyday and we needed them to end, for the sake of humanity. Message music. Unfortunately the powers that be were not having it, so along came "crack" and other forms of destruction. Now look at what we have. Self-hate being spewed by the young and they think it's "cool".
I'm mo say it 1 mo ginn, STAND is the funkiest break-down of all time, in our house when Sly said, EVERYBODY!, for the final time!, you had to stop what you were doing, what ever it was and bust the best moves you had and as hard as you could, for the remainder of that song, my whole Family even my Mom's would be bustin it, that is what is called " The funky break-down ", til this very day, if I hear STAND, I will continue to stop what I'm doing for?, The funkiest break-down of all time, Thank you Sly and the Family Stone, yous were way ahead of your time!, we are not to judge your personal life, you gave us your life through the music, BLESS YOU SLY, no SLY, no Family stone either!💛
I was too young to understand the lyrics, but I sure felt the hook at 2:17 that makes anyone STAND! 😅
More relevant today than ever! Funny how I lived through the first revolution, and now I'm living to see this one. It began with us, brothers and sisters..and now it's up to you to carry the torch. Never forget..that God in God's infinite wisdom created us ALL. Stand for justice, stand for humanity to learn to live and learn from one another- in peace.
This song is an incredible example of divine inspiration, both within it's creation and how it flows through each of us who truly absorbs it. Among the best and most important records ever made.
I’ve been binging them, so so great.. they should never be forgotten.. If popular music were only this great today in ‘23..
I can't listen to the last 50 seconds of this song without breaking into tears. Everything musical in the 60's, everything, went downhill after this. Tough, practical, funky, inspirational ... it's all here. One for the ages.
Now 68 I'm proud to say this was my time and the 60's were one of the greatest if not the greatest decades for music. It will never happen again, and current generations will never get it! The black & white boundaries were there yeah... but music helped break them down. This will always be my favorite Sly tune. Simply a great tune...but the end jam is just Bad Ass... Forever Sly!
It will never happen again, and current generations will never get it??????? I'm 43 and I get it. You need to get over your arrogance.
Woo-Hoo... ask a f*cking 23 year old who Sly is. And if/when you get to 65 you'll have the right to express all the arrogance you want also. Although not sure where the arrogance even plays into my comment. Facts are facts!
My favorite too, I'm 65 too, and when I saw them perform this live, we gave them 4 standing ovations!!! Sounds so good, we need this so bad in these times!! Sly helped break down barriers, you didn't think about color when he sang.
I hear ya... Music is not about color... but those days are gone, just memories of the best times!

Sly and the family are so cool. They are a bridge that still stands. Let's cross it together.
Why am I dancing & crying?
The BEST live concert I ever attended (and there were many) was with Sly & the Family Stone, in 1971. You didn't just go, you were a PARTICIPANT! There was at least 10 feet of snow outside, on a Tuesdsy night. The show didn't stop until they had come back for encores FOUR times! We were up stomping and screaming for more. The last song was "STAND"! in Indianapolis, Indiana--could you blame us? That show wasn't over until 4am. Will never forget it!!
Thanks for sharing! I wish there was more concert video/audio of Sly's live performances during this era.

This song is as old as me and I've listened to it my whole life and have yet to get tired of it.
I played this song since it came out in 1969. This song is a message of spiritual uplift, fighting what's wrong of life, and the power within each of us from above. ALL RAISE AND STAND.
Sly was my first concert at 14 years old. I was totally turned on to the new blend of Funk music.

Almost sweet the way the lyrics start out. Each verse of truth builds....and builds....and builds.....until there is a battle cry and unfettered rage. Masterful. You didn't listen to this, you experienced it.
Music critic Joel Selvin feels that the importance of Sly and the Family Stone's influence on African-American music is such that for him "there are two types of black music: black music before Sly Stone, and black music after Sly Stone".
Sly Stone got a lot of his "funk" from the legendary James Brown...
There is no black or white music....it is spiritual. Music brings us all together!
Absolutely correct. Just listening to black music that was contemporary to his time is all you need to know how innovative Sly was.
Well Alan D, Joel is so ... wrong. Sly is hella important; this is true. His is indeed one of my favorites from this era. However, Sly and his group are no more of an important turning point than Charlie Parker, James Brown or Teddy Riley. Truthfully, I feel (like the kids today say) "some type of way" about whites trying to define black music in America as if (IDK) it doesn't count until someone white validates it in the San Fransisco Chronicle. Let me give you a brief history lesson. Black music comes to the surface because of a group of 9 students only 5 years removed from slavery who, in 1871, introduced America and indeed the world to the true music of Black America. Not that "culturally appropriated" imitative degrading BS perpetrated by the likes of the Stephen Fosters of the world in minstrel shows. If there is a true defining point in the history of "Black Music" (which BTW is the foundation of American Music) it is 1871 with the emergence of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, America's first global Music Super Stars not 1967 with Sylvester Stewart and his band. When you tell me Joe Shmo (Joe Selvin or WTF his name is-critc from the SF Chronicle) says Sly is the pivotal point of importance like it's the Gospel Truth...Well, I just can't let that slide by...even as much as I LOVE Sly and the Family Stone.
@@blaqbull3 Really...I mean, art is for everyone, but the racial lines drawn especially in America made it so that Blacks were "caste" and therefore separate from the larger society. so, I must tell you, the music created by the Black people ostracized by this system is Black Music. IJS
