He wasn't "on the edge of crashing"-he actually crashed several times. He just didn't fall down. There's a saying in auto racing: "He wrecked-he just didn't hit anything." That's what this run was.
This was my first time watching the Winter Olympics that I can remember. I was nine years old at the time and this sparked my love of alpine skiing ever since! To make it even better my mum took me and my sister to Austria for the summer holidays in the same year and we visited Innsbruck and many of the Winter Olympics locations. I also spent my tenth birthday in Vienna! I've been a fan of the Austrian ski team ever since!
I saw the run in the 76 Olympics, and forever, this is the best I have ever seen.and my wife is from Austria,so this was a great thrill for the both of us.
How much pressure was he under ? Imagine knowing an entire country was waiting for nothing less than victory from you. If you fail how do you face anyone ? None of that seemed to bother Franz Klammer. Fantastic !
After all these years, I decided to see what the Internet had to say about this race. Much to my surprise, and like others, I saw it live and also thought it was epic then. It still remains the one performance out of all I've seen before or since that I vividly remember....and I don't have a 2nd place. I met a U.S. Olympic ski official from that time who knew Franz Klammer well. He told me that he was once talking with Franz about that race. The exact words Franz said to him were [think with heavy German accent just as he imitated Franz in relating this to me]: "I was out of control the entire time. It was wonderful!" ["I vas out of control zee entire time. It vas vonderful!"] That says it all and there you have it -- directly from the man himself.
In terms of technique, what was so unconventional about this run? I read that he changed his plan for the last half of the race, in what way did he change the plan?
40 years later and my heart still pounds . Franz!!!
That was the most daredevil run I've ever seen. Klammer was on the edge of crashing the whole time going down the hill.

The greatest downhill ski race ever!
The best ever!
Indelible boyhood memory. Still thrills.

Great editing! This short video well captures how important Klammer’s victory was to Austria.
The best run ever.

Die haben noch Skifahren können! Man beachte die „Präparierung „ der Piste! Super Leistung !!!
In a league by himself.
