    Thank you for making this video, Lisa. I watched this video over five times until I took action after realizing the meaning and comparison behind it. Why did I compare with those who say native speakers make mistakes, too? I should compare myself with those who have strong grammar skills if I want to be an advanced English user. That's why I purchased the "Understanding and using grammar" book and started to practice it, too. Just like you said, I was insecure about my grammar all the time and I had to use Grammarly to check my grammar to make sure I used the correct grammar. Because of your video, I decided to overcome this weakness even though I had no problem communicating in English most of the time. This was really inspiring. I appreciate your great video as always:)

    Hello, my favourite online teacher! I am strongly hoping you're okay.
    I would like to give my contribution to the topic. I'm a student at university in West Africa. Here, French is our educational and the most popular language. English is taught as a foreign language from form 1 till he university. In our country, our teachers of english don't joke with grammar aspects in our written and oral communication. We are so strict with the pronunciation and grammar rules. When you make a single mistake in your conversation, you will be interrupted for it. Thanks for your everyday teaching.

    I totally agree with you, Lisa! Part of my in-law family are immigrants and they're clearly not fluent in English; they make grammar mistakes and have thick accents. They many times try to convince me that it's okay to have an accent and to make grammar mistakes because native speakers make those mistakes, too. I agree with them, too. This's personal choice. I think it's nothing wrong about having an accent, but why should we choose not to improve or imitate someone's mistakes?!

    • @johndereck304
      @johndereck304 7 месяцев назад

      The way you speak sounds like you think you are accent free. This is where you are totally wrong. Everybody indeed DOES have an accent. And while your in-laws could be total morons and never learn English properly, that does NOT mean you are accent free.

Your extensive experience and leadership skills in this field could help the Community Colleges in the United States to improve their methods of teaching for foreigners. Based on my experience, the English classes at the community colleges are not fit for foreigners, although the native English learners could benefit very much from those classes.

    Grammar mistakes are usually forgiven for native speakers.
    For non-native speakers that's a no go when passing exams or jobs interview.
    Also, there are different grammar levels. There are rules and exceptions like when a word ending with 'p' changes to double 'pp' like stop and stopping. It's better to just memorize some words instead of rules.

    English is usually given naturally to English speakers when they even make a mistake it's not a big deal or acceptable. This is because they aware of their mistakes and can correct it admitting it. But as for non natives we always struggle to speak English correctly following all grammar rules and usage of vocabulary in context. There are two kinds of English, in my opinion: natural and artificial. They are Native English and non native English. When natives speak English, they don't struggle or don't feel any language pressure. It all comes down to them naturally even the most difficult English grammar so even if they make mistakes they can correct it easily without any struggle but non natives experience embarrassment and discomfort while speaking English and they always struggle to grammatically structure their sentence. Natives don't care about any grammar rules while they speak because it is already naturally structured in their head. Natives tend to speak English without thinking about their grammar but non native speakers always make it their priority to speak correct English keeping in mind all grammar rules and word usage in context. I think grammar rules must be simplified and easy to understand. Good grammar is essential and helps to make English a real and accurate English.

    • @johndereck304
      @johndereck304 7 месяцев назад

      With enough practice and time you will become fluent and won't even think about rules any more. I am a naturalized American and my first language is Bulgarian. I often dream in English - it's become that good. There is no need at all to feel embarrassed. I can bet my pair of old boots that if put the majority of native speakers to a grammar test , probably 90 + per cent won't pass it. Generally speaking, English in the USA is quite choppy and has bad grammar. It is a lot better and a lot more correctly spoken in England, but even there I've heard people say IS when they really MUST say ARE. It is rare though. In England though, you have another challenge as a non-native speaker called accents. The further north you go, the more it sucks. But with enough exposure and practice you can nail that too. It would be very good if all Americans spoke similarly to Lisa, but unfortunately they the fuck do not.

    I think that grammar is very important, especially at the beginning of our english course, probably starting from school! On the oher hand if you do not know the grammar of the foreign language you want to study, and also the one of your native language, it could be very difficult to learn a language in a proper way! The conversation, listening comprehension....are fundamental, tool. Thank you very much for this great video.

I noticed that in 12:00 of the video, you mentioned the past participle of "forget" is "forgotten" and "forgot" is a grammar mistake. However, I would like to mention that some recent references use both (forgot and forgotten) as the third part of "forget'.

    there are a lot of things to consider when learning the English language. In my personal point of view speaking correct grammar is ultimately plays an important role when communicating to other people for better understanding and outcomes. however it is not necessary to speak with perfection in order to convey your message. apart from mastering the grammar, you also need to learn phrases, idioms and slangs because Americans often use them during conversations based on my experience and observations. one particular day when I joined my husband and a roofing consultant, i just sat next to my husband and listening intently to their conversations, i noticed that the guy uses several idioms and phrases good thing i studied them therefore I didn't get lost and was able to comprehend everything that he said. one more thing is that get used to different american accents and speed because in the actual conversation they speak very fast😅 especially blacks they are harder to understand than whites. in my 5 yrs of stay in the US i would say that my grammar is far from perfect and still not fluent. Im quite disappointed though but I've seen huge improvement compared before. i need to develop confidence and more exposure. English is not a joke it's difficult to learn. So kudos to us who can speak English we're still lucky even though we dont know how to speak perfect grammar.
