    I towed a 2005 Fleetwood Gearbox Toy Hauler 38 feet long 3 axle 12200 dry weight and 2100 lbs pin weight with my 2017 Ram3500 Big Horn single rear wheel. The thing you need to worry about is the pin weight on the rear axles. Each tire is only rated for so much weight. You have to look on the side of the tire to see what weight it is rated for. I had 300 lbs to spare on the tiring weight rating. I went up and down 5 and 6% grades in Northern Arizona with no problem. I also converted the fifth wheel pin on the Gearbox Trailer to a gooseneck hitch. I preferred the gooseneck hitch instead of the fifth wheel taking up my whole bed. It worked perfectly.

    This is a great video, but I think you’ve missed an important point.
    I’ve been looking at pretty much this exact setup with a slightly different trailer (39’, 13k dry weight, dual axle) and have been crunching numbers on a lot of different rigs in this segment.
    The real test here would have been to fill the 100+ gallon water tank, the 60 gallon trailer fuel tank, loaded a 1600 pound RZR in the garage, put a couple more people in the back seat, food, clothes, gear, etc.
    Once all these are added into the equation, the numbers really start to bleed into dually territory, especially truck payload and likely axle/tire rating. I would have loved to see how the truck handles in a this more realistic scenario, because I don’t want to buy a dually!

      Richard West This actually makes me happy that I did but my 2018 3500 SRW. Not only was it considerably cheaper but it was a proven design. With the 2019 models they have new designs that have possibilities of failures and design flaws. The new trucks don’t offer too much more then the outgoing models so it wouldn’t be worth the risk of problems and the extra cost for me.

      Mike H Not enough has changed to justify the increase in price, and also make anyone regret buying a 2018. Within a year or so they will most likely improve the transmission to a 8 speed or 10 speed and that will be a much larger improvement then what they have changed this time.

    As always, excellent video. I love the cadence of the conversational yet focused approach to your style. Feels more like we are having an active conversation vs listening to someone just drone on spewing random thoughts like many similar channels.
    I am looking hard at upgrading my 2016 Ram 2500 CTD with rear air suspension to a 2019 3500 for all the modern safety tech like ACC. My RV is similar in size to this one (2018 OpenRange 374BHS which is 12,800 dry, and 40ft) and I tow it maybe 3-4 times a year. The inner conflict between SRW or DRW is massive as the truck is my daily driver in NE Ohio where dually and snow sounds like a bad time. Smaller conflict going on between mega cab or not and risking the shorter bed length using the Andersen Ultimate 5th wheel hitch.
    Also very interested in the 2020 GMC 3500 with the auto 4WD, side steps and multi-function tailgate, although I am rather dissapointed in the GM interior quality - still, I have had previous 1/2 ton GM trucks including a 2008 Avalanche which is still my favorite truck to date.

My truck weighs 7200lbs. That leaves me at about 16,000 pounds worth of trailers.I’ll be just under that. I feel pretty confident it will be no problem. Just take her easy.

    Kudos to BTBRV for promoting overtrucking. I traded my 1/2 ton for a 3/4 ton to tow my 6500 lb travel trailer. Night and day as far as confidence towing the RV.
    I liked the engine brake feature. While we are concerned with tow ratings, the limiting feature of these trucks seems to be how much weight they can safely stop.

    • @brandoncaldwell95

      Not docking you by any means, but why such a large truck for such a tiny trailer? Planning on pulling doubles? I personally have pulled the same 10,000lbs bumper pull camper with 2 1500s and a 3500. One being an 05 1500 chevy z71, next a 2011 chevy 2wd and now a 3500 dually. I really cant tell a different other than engine power. Stability has been the same. I only really noticed a difference when going from the 1500 and my 10500lbs 5th wheel to the 3500 and the 10500lbs 5th wheel. One squats the other sits like a brick! Only upgraded trucks as a 40ft dovetail looks funny when a 1500 pulls it. Alsonthe damn 40ft pushes 8500lbs empty and 30,000 loaded.

    • @pgrant7688
      @pgrant7688 5 лет назад +3

      Brandon Caldwell when BTBRV speaks of towing confidence, I have a feeling of knowing if you are placed in a difficult situation you and your truck can handle it. I won’t ever go out to the max weight as far as what my truck can tow because I’d be stressing the vehicle/RV combo.
      I’ve driven my truck/RV combo in rush hour traffic in the New York City/Eastern New Jersey Area. When I needed to stop, it stopped. When I needed to go, we went. It was really no problem. I couldn’t imagine doing that in a 1/2 ton truck.

  • @SurelyYewJest
    @SurelyYewJest 4 года назад +2

    I say this as someone actively shopping for trucks right now in anticipation of getting a 5th wheel that is over 11k lbs dry: A 1-ton SRW is just the way to go IMO if you are towing any trailer worth 10,000lbs or more. Most 3/4-tons may have the towing overhead with the diesel engine, but a surprising amount of them cannot payload enough, and even if they can, it's often because it's the gas engine, which trades away tow capacity. I thought 3/4-ton trucks would be the central focus of my search, and in doing my level best to make sure the trailer plus us and stuff doesn't go above rated maximums, looking for the rarer 1-ton SRWs is where I ended up. Those trucks have plenty of headroom on both counts.

    My favorite part of the Ram trucks is there foldable tow mirrors the fact that if you don't want Tow Mirrors when you don't need them you don't have to have them and they look great in the down position and in the up position Chevys and Fords over the years have had some very ugly giant tow mirrors even when you're not Towing anyting you're stuck with them. I hope Ram never gets rid of those mirrors. I believe it's haters that don't like those mirrors and would love to see Ram put some ugly mirror on their truck. Why do some people leave them up all the time because they love that big rig Style That Ford and Chevy I tried to copy upright and rectangular. my father likes them down when he is not telling I like them up all the time my wife likes them down. Yes, a single wheel deisel truck can easily pull that trailer/weight but, if you ever have a rear tire fail while driving at any higher speeds the truck and, trailer will most likely be totaled along with the chance of you being seriously hurt or, dead. If you are going to be traveling at higher speeds for long distances it is always advised to use a dual rear wheel truck.

      Boy Dennis, I could not agree with you more. I upgraded my fuel tank in an F250 and was able to have the computer recalibrated for the Miles too Empty. I have on order a 2019 Ram 3500 Limited and am disappointed that it comes with such a small tank. I have already contacted a local company to install a new tank when it comes in. But, it is my understanding that Ram locks down the computer and won't even let a dealer in to change the MTE. I don't get why. With the 31-gallon stock tank, I will have to refuel in the middle of a trip. With a 50 gallon tank, that will last me all day as that is just about all the miles I want to drive per day. I am going with a Titan tank and they have a unit that plugs into the OBDII connector and uses an app on your phone. Good I guess but not as good as the truck computer.

    I don't know how much towing you have done in the mountains with your current F450 but the exhaust brake in auto mode does a amazing job maintaining your speed going down a steep grade. I have a 2017 F350 and a 37 foot Mountana High Country fiver, going down a 7 percent grade it kept me at 45 mph with Cruze control off and not touching the brakes. The rigs CGW was over 23k. New ram looks nice from all your vids. But I will never buy another. My last truck was a 2016 ram 2500 with Cummins. Love how well it towed our RV. Loved the smooth ride loved everything about it when it worked. Anything that said moose seemed to be crap through. Ac system went out 4 times in 110,000 miles. Valve body in transmission had to be replaced twice. U connect radio replaced 3 times. Def system replaced 3 times and left me stranded twice. And in 3 years of ownership 9 recalls. I had to have more recalls done then all other vehicles I have owned combine. Worst reliability I have ever had. Things can function well and work well. But if reliability stinks what is the point. I went to a Ford F-250 and so far been the best truck I have ever owned since I have been buying heavy duty trucks.

    The number that is limiting with the SRW trucks is the GCWR. Combined weight of truck and trailer. You will be right up to the limit, if not over with a tri axle toy hauler. Also a biggie is that all these trucks loose 2% tow ratings for each 1000 feet of altitude. 5000 feet, you just lost 10% percent of your tow rating. Look in your owners manuals, it's there in black and white. I've had both SRW and DRW. The only safe and legal way is DRW for trailers of this size and weight. Another minus for me is the tiny fuel tanks in the Ram trucks, go on a big trip, and getting fuel several times a day is a pain and eats huge amount of time.

    A DRW only adds a hair over 11 inches to your rear end footprint and actually has smaller tires than a SRW on the front end meaning less traction which means less steering and braking patch on the road itself on the axle that is doing most of the work in stopping and all the work in maneuvering. Total tire patch on the road on a dually isn't much more than an SRW. This SRW Ram that he was driving is the 24k towing, 4k payload (rounded figures) truck which surpasses 4 DRWs simply because those DRWs are workbox trucks; the ones with cranes, welding gear, generator, tools, etc on them. There are only two DRWs that surpass this SRW in towing capability. This data is all from the RAM 3500 SAE J2807 chart. What this means is that a DRW isn't necessarily the end all truck and that even an SRW can confidently handle the loads that we RVers place on them, properly equipped. Do your homework before you buy and you'll be rewarded. @BTBRV can you please do a review of the charts so that people know how to read them properly and describe the differences in DRWs so that people just aren't buying a dually to find out that they can only safely tow 13k #'s instead of 32k #'s like advertised.

    Hooray, you did a 5th wheel towing video with my type truck! Although mine is a 2017 RAM 3500 SRW MegaCab Limited Cummins/Aisin, I have the 900 pound feet of torque model, which is still ample. You did not mention the rear gearing in your test truck? I ordered my truck with the 3.42 rear gears because it is my daily driver and I want max mpg. Towing my 13k pound Montana 39' 5th wheel is still no problem even on hills. The Cummins/Aisin package doesn't care and pulls like a train (overkill good). The exhaust brake is probably my favorite feature. I also opted for the Ram Boxes and I am glad I did, so convenient. They did pose a challenge while looking to pull a 5th wheel as RAM won't install the 5th wheel prep in a Ram Box truck, for liability reasons with tight turning and uneven terrain turning. I had to install my own in-bed rail set. I installed the Reese Titan 20k hitch (overkill good) and swapped out my 5th wheel pin box to a Reese Sidewinder 19k model (overkill good). This system works great yet is somewhat costly. No heavy slider hitch necessary with the 6'4" bed. Ram Boxes still open with an inch clearance. Since the 5th wheel's pivot point is now moved back under the nose of the trailer and not over the hitch, I have ample turning radius and can go just past 90 degrees. I like the electric spot mirrors on the 2019, wish I had those. That bigger screen is nicer, too. And I wish I had the newer LED headlights. To all the naysayers, I have 58k miles on my truck without a single problem. I keep it faithfully maintained and do not beat on it. These trucks are very complex high tech tools and I treat mine as such. I have endured 3 minor yet bothersome recalls, column shift check, replacement of cab top clearance lights, and tail gate latch. I have really enjoyed your recent series of RAM HD truck videos. Fantastic work and keep the videos coming.

      Uh, ok, what do you think it would do then? You going to put 20k on the pin?

    Better to have too much truck for the trailer than to have too much trailer for the truck.

    Never saw the point in single wheel 3500/350 class trucks. The difference between the 2500 and 3500 srw are so close in spec, either get a 2500 for more comfortable ride or a 3500 dually for more towing, payload and stability. Same goes for the GM twins and Ford

      James Mastroianni Reason I bought the 3500 was I wanted leafs in the rear, the Aisin transmission, and the 12,300lb gvwr. If you look at the numbers the truck technically tows like 100 lbs less than the same 2500. But the 2500 doesn’t have 4,300 lbs of payload.

      @@getpower1 Wait I thought only the 1500 had coils.

      James Mastroianni 2500 has had them for a few years now. Since ‘14 or ‘15.

      All three manufacturers limit their 3/4 tons to 10,000 gvwr. The srw one tons are usually 1500 to 2000 lbs higher gvwr so you get a higher payload rating. If you look most diesel 3/4 ton trucks are limited to 2200 lbs of payload so they would actually hit their payload limit long before they hit their towing limit.
