Fantastic Kathy, I generally mix the grout with some dirt but after seeing your results I might try using straight grout. Plus I’ll have to get myself one of those snow and ice sieves, it looked like it worked really well 😃
This couldn't have come at a better time for me, I'm in the middle of a repaint of a statue and I have just started the base!! Great work as usual Kathy
Great video Kathy. I got here from Luke's website, his videos are fantastic, just like yours. Really enjoying your starter series. Need good basics advice.
great ideas there my friend, my neighbour is a builder and he gave me a bag of carlite backing plaster, it makes an excellent ground cover much like the tile grout
Hi Kathy, You make it look so easy , I don't have any tights at the moment , if you can oblige would be grateful , nice one , keep safe, All the Best Brian 🤗
just discovered your channel, excellent work... I use tea leaves for my dirt....seems to work very nicely.. thinking of coffee grinds for future projects
Well Kathy you’ve done it again. I’m currently working on a new layout for my trains and Warhammer 40k miniatures and was looking for ideas to set the modules for ground cover so now I have a good way to do that. Tks again new fenris railroad
Kathy a couple of years ago I came across a heap of what is known as road scrapings it is what comes from a road plane I ran it through a number tea strainers etc and tights to get the various grades down to dust. It is ideal for areas in yards etc looking like dark ash a couple of buckets full will keep me going for a life time
Hi Kathy: Gary here from Michigan - I am lost not receiving my YT e-mail notifications - but I found you the old way - I use play sand and small amount of dirt - Cool demonstration 🚂
ello Kathy, thank you for another inspiring video, I've never thought about using tile grout before, but after seeing the final effect, I'll certainly think about it in future, anyway, stay safe, all the best from Scotland, Stephen.
Wish I'd seen your videos when I was doing the scenery on my layout "Pease Green",I would definitely have done things differently. But,plenty of inspiration for future projects. Thanks for another great video.
great video as usual Kathy - what are those metal blocks you placed on the foam pieces to weigh them down (2:50 on the video) called? thanks, I have been looking for a set of them
I am just finding your RUclips channel and enjoy very much the information you provide. One quick question, in the Starting Scenery Essential Earth video you mention using a "snow and ice" sieve. I would like to buy one and have search online diligently without success. I am hoping you might be able to provide a link or other information about where to find one. Thanks in advance.
Unfortunately the Snow and Ice sieve has been discontinued and is no longer available. What I liked about it was its size and shape. I’ll try a tea strainer. Thanks for your quick response I am a big fan of your channel.
How do you spray the alcohol without it blowing all the stuff off your working area? Seems like no matter how far away I am when I spray most of my ground layer, dirt, sand, or whatever gets blown all over the place.
Great little mini video again. I've been using a good mix of garden dirt and grout mixes, pretty much as luke does his. Great earthy results once dried and you can really play around with the tones. Take a look, ive just launched a new 'mini scenes series' to the channel with the first moorlands diorama featured. Plenty more coming up with a bundle of ideas to create realistic scenery. Tim.
hiya, i have been watching ur videos over the past few months and i really like them very helpfull. however i really really liked the 3D resin prints u did of the dinoric slate wagons. i was wondering if u could maybe update us on how there going, what wheels u use by what manufacturer ur gonna be using on them, also how to paint them and weather, even adding couplings. it would make a great video. finally do u know what scale or the wagons are, will the fit on oo9 1:76 ? thank you, jordan
Jordan. I am working behind the scenes on that layout so it will eventually make a video. The wagons are from Thingiverse and you can print them or I did buy some from Shapeways if you can’t print them. They are OO9, 1:76 and my big decision is double flanged wheels or not.
I've been using grout for several years as well. It's good to know the experts agree. :) Do you find you get better results with sanded versus non-sanded grout?
Glue spreads better in sanded grout but the UK doesn’t really label sanded v unsanded. Thin layers aren’t really an issue but if your glue isn’t sinking in then add some sand.
What tile grout are u using for the earth ...the main colour..tried your link wasn't working and looked online at a local store only see grey or white grouts
Just found my new diorama teacher today.
Fantastic Kathy, I generally mix the grout with some dirt but after seeing your results I might try using straight grout. Plus I’ll have to get myself one of those snow and ice sieves, it looked like it worked really well 😃
I do like the sieve... it’s easy to fill up. I think you have better dirt than I do. Your garden must be top notch as well as full of holes!
Oh man I just watched your videos Luke and then dug up the garden. Now you're saying I didn't need to!😆
Always a pleasure to watch, also very informative thank you Kathy :)
Thanks a lot!
@@KathyMillatt My pleasure :)

Thanks. Good luck with your base.
Well done Kathy. Always a pleasure to watch your videos.
Thanks John.
Great video Kathy. I got here from Luke's website, his videos are fantastic, just like yours. Really enjoying your starter series. Need good basics advice.
Having watched this, I feel you've given me the confidence to have a go at my first diorama 👍 thank you.
Brilliant. Good luck and I hope it goes well.
@@KathyMillatt thank you.
Another great video, everyone I watch I learn something useful
That’s brilliant. Thanks.
This was so helpful, thanks 😊
Glad it was helpful!
How did I miss the memo about tile grout for this long? This is great!
At least you know now!
Love your videos Very helpful
Thanks!
great ideas there my friend, my neighbour is a builder and he gave me a bag of carlite backing plaster, it makes an excellent ground cover much like the tile grout
I suspect most plasters would act similarly but the grout is also the right colour which is a plus for me.
@@KathyMillatt yes thats a bonus the stuff i got needs painting
Hi Kathy, You make it look so easy , I don't have any tights at the moment , if you can oblige would be grateful , nice one , keep safe, All the Best Brian 🤗
Sorry Brian, my tights are in use!
Another excellent video Kathy, will definitely use tile grout within my muddy tracks, when I get around to it.
It’s perfect for those! I will be doing a further video on dirt and gravel tracks.
Great technique Kathy. Thank you very much.
Thanks!
That's a great video Kathy. It's great to get another one from you. Tile grout is a great tip. Thanks.
Thanks! I really do love it.
Another great video. I will be starting some scenery soon so Will be looking at using some of these techniques.
Good luck!
As usual Kathy some great advice. I too use grout mixed with dirt to lighten the color. Thanks again, Chris
Thanks!
Super! Now I'm off to the big box building supply store to check out their tile grout stock!
Have fun!

thank you so much kathy, for sharing this
Glad you enjoyed it.
Getting ready to try, I made a few using stuff from the yard. Time to stock up and take my time
It’s very forgiving. I hope yours goes well.
Amazing!! So glad I found your channel 😊
I'll have to look locally at tile grout. Great video, thanks for sharing
Good luck and thanks
Excellent tip and great video, will most definitely try this very soon. Regards, Chris
Thanks Chris.
Very clever and not that hard to make when you know how of course!Thank you for sharing a great tip!
Scenery is quite simple at heart but it’s knowing which are the best methods for you and your model.
Well Kathy you’ve done it again. I’m currently working on a new layout for my trains and Warhammer 40k miniatures and was looking for ideas to set the modules for ground cover so now I have a good way to do that. Tks again new fenris railroad
Sounds like a fascinating mix! Good luck with it.

Sounds intriguing. I was given some foundry sand by John from the GMRC. It’s amazing how we find unusual products to use.
Kathy Millatt the ballast I use at the moment I got from a stream in south Warwickshire a little goes a long way
Neil Rogers nice!
Looking good keep posting videos up
Thanks and will do. Just finishing the next one now.
Really helpful - as always. Thank you again
Thanks Alex.
Hi Kathy: Gary here from Michigan - I am lost not receiving my YT e-mail notifications - but I found you the old way - I use play sand and small amount of dirt - Cool demonstration 🚂
Glad you found me again and found the video useful.
For decades I've used pva + sand + soil ( + water), as a paste of any thickness or thinness that i need.
I use the same but with tile grout instead of soil. I have far more variety of colours that way.
ello Kathy, thank you for another inspiring video, I've never thought about using tile grout before, but after seeing the final effect, I'll certainly think about it in future, anyway, stay safe, all the best from Scotland, Stephen.
Stephen. I’ve found grout to be so versatile and easy to use.
Have you ever tried “non clumping” kitty litter? You would be surprised with this material.
I did have some which was like small hydroponics beads but I’ve never tried the non clumping. I’ll perhaps check it out if I can find a small bag.
Thanks Kathy.
Wish I'd seen your videos when I was doing the scenery on my layout "Pease Green",I would definitely have done things differently. But,plenty of inspiration for future projects. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks Ian. We live and learn and I certainly would do my layout differently if starting again.
Great idea's Kathy! Thanks for the video, and congrats on your full time job! I'm moving to another state so all my supplies are packed up. Ughhh..
Finding stuff is a real challenge at the best of times for me. Good luck with your move.
great video as usual Kathy - what are those metal blocks you placed on the foam pieces to weigh them down (2:50 on the video) called? thanks, I have been looking for a set of them
Thanks. They’re machinist 1-2-3 blocks. Very useful!
@@KathyMillatt thank you kathy!
Hi Kathy great video just curious where did you find your seives for spreading or sifting the dirt, it makes it so handy and easy to apply.
I got them from a company that no longer exists I’m afraid but small kitchen sieves or tea strainers are good options
@ for sure thank you.
Great video.
Kathy, what brand of grout are you using? I try to locate some here in Switzerland.
I buy whatever I can but Larsen has been good for colours. My favourite was a discontinued Unibond.

Mine is from Precision Ice and Snow in the UK but try a tea strainer instead if that’s easier to get hold of.
Unfortunately the Snow and Ice sieve has been discontinued and is no longer available. What I liked about it was its size and shape. I’ll try a tea strainer. Thanks for your quick response I am a big fan of your channel.
@@johnsoule9667 Thank you and I used a tea strainer for years so it works fine.
You may even be able to find a flour shaker or something with a fine mesh and a container underneath.
Thanks
Thankyou Kathy. Where do you get the tile grout from?
I get mine online or from builders suppliers.
How do you spray the alcohol without it blowing all the stuff off your working area? Seems like no matter how far away I am when I spray most of my ground layer, dirt, sand, or whatever gets blown all over the place.
I spray from a height and let it rain down on the earth. The trick is finding a fine spray that moistens the surface without disturbing it.

I haven’t decided on couplings as that’s a head ache. I’m used to Kadees but they’re not appropriate here.
Thank you that's helped me alot 😊

I've heard a lot of people mention using grout, but never saying how. Thanks for filling that gap.
@@NickMeredith Kathy's is probably more permanent, but I just spread it dry and spray it with wet water.
