- The Greater Roadrunner lives year-round in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, and southern California. They can be seen in deserts, brush, and grasslands on the ground or sitting on low perches, such as, fences. Predators of roadrunners are raccoons, hawks, and, of course, coyotes.
Although capable of limited flight, it spends most of its time on the ground, and can run at speeds up to 32km/h or 20mph. Cases where they have run
as fast as 42km/h or 26mph have been reported.
Roadrunners will eat any other birds they can catch. It is the state bird of New Mexico. Ancient Native American and Mexican peoples also honored
roadrunners and considered them to be good luck.
