Can't believe how much energy just jumped out of the upper mids of my mix when I tried this! 🙏🏻 Really appreciate you sharing so much of your wisdom here Streaky - I've been getting some decent results experimenting with your techniques.
Wow, what a difference that makes, I tried it on one of my own mixes and it really gave it that extra percent that i think people are gonna pick up on. Keep giving out these small tips and tricks, i can imagine it helps a lot of people👏
Blesed love elder streaky ini still a fulljoy your teaching and honesty i would like to have a chance to winning the masselec eq as this would be a blessing to my new studio in Jamaica i know you have a lot of people to choose from Elder streaky but i am confident that if i win it that you will see and hear my mixes and mastering frim your blessed gift
Hi mate, I love your videos thank you for the knowledge. I'm just wondering how this trick differs from the one you did in the video 'How to make a track jump out of the speakers'. I know you used MB in this video here and Q3 in the other but I'm wondering when to use or how to choose between the 2 methods as they seem very similar to my noobish mind. Thank you again.
My perfect track just got better too! Enjoying FabFilter total very much. One (silly) question though. I was doing stereo widening following your other advice, which had same MB with compression on S higher band. For this "smile" it's Expand. Should I be running both MB one after another (is it a good thing?) or manipulate upper band on one MB instead?
Something I saw Luca Pretolesi do: in pro MB use the low end as the side chain singal to trigger the high end expansion. Works even better to add groove. I also find it easier to dial this in when doing bigger boosts and than turning it down with the wet/dry control
Dear Mr. Streaky, my mom really, really likes you so could you please do a video on mixing with different speakers. I just entered a remix contest and hated my entry when i heard it on YT. It had way too much bass in it which i can't hear too well as i have tinnitus. I use Event 20/20P speakers which cost me arms and legs years ago. I ran the mix through hi-fi speakers and cheap PC speakers as well before i printed it. Obviously it sounded ok as i went ahead. I used what you may know as the low end mix trick. 1) isolate the bass kick, 2) run it through a VU meter, 3) trim the VU so the kick hits -3. Now add in the bass and mix the bass vol. until the kick and bass together hit 0 on the VU. Obviously the "trick" didn't work. Did i get the trick wrong or is there something else i am stuffing up. This is a huge topic. If one set of speakers sound bass boomy and the other set sounds ok which sound do you go with? I just don't know. Please tell me and my mom will bake you a cake and deliver it personally..........👩🏼
OMG, this is amazing. I was noticing, after watching another video, that many, many EDM tracks (I haven't checked other genres) have a dip in the mids compared to the low and high ranges when you look at the most raucous part of the song with a spectrum analyzer. I tried to create this with just an EQ and it definitely helps the final product. With a dynamic EQ, it should be even better. And that's what you're demonstrating! Cool! I'm sure this isn't something you want to do indescriminately, but it's always worth considering, I would guess. Certainly, it works here. Thanks! This is inspiring me to analyze more tracks to see their signatures and try to use that information to improve my mixes. I think the take-away is "learn from successful commercial tracks by studying them." Oh, and listen to Streaky....
Hi Streaky:-) I have a christmas wish: Could you do a comparison between ATC SCM25a`s and the Neumann KH310`s? ....or just do it the easy way; just tell me which one you would prefer for mixing/mastering. -Cheers
Thank you so much for this, this really helped on a dnb tune I am working on today :) All your videos have really helped me, thank you so much Streaky!
Hi Streaky, I'm getting a lot out of your vids - thank you for doing what you do! Could you explain how and why exactly a stereo bass is a problem? I love bass and sometimes certain tracks or arrangements rely on wider bass information for more dramatic effect or sense of space. Even a chorus or flange fx on bass for example. I always feel obliged to mono anything below 90Hz and feel sometimes it kills the vibe. Is monoing the bass (besides personal taste) just to comply with having a mono compatible mix?
Fantastic details Streaky! As usual. Thanks so much for all the knowledge.

I vividly remember this tip since I first saw this video. I have a question though: where would you put this in your processing chain? For instance, if you're using another multiband to control the lows, would that be before this one?
I have a question please, would using a dynamic EQ achieve the same? I believe they kind of do the same thing right? I have the waves F6 dynamic EQ, I don't have a multi-band compressor. Thank you.
I use F6 quite a lot myself...I believe it would work for this, but you'd need to play with the center frequencies and Q's a lot since they're much more narrowly targeted than on a multiband comp.
Is the download for the preset you mentioned at 1:23 available please? On my first go I only had Waves Linear Phase Multiband Compressor which was quite fiddly to set up. Then I downloaded the Pro-MB demo and the large UI was so much easier to set up with more features. Crazy thing is I prefer how the Waves LinMB sounded. Maybe I just saved myself $200?
Human perception of loudness cant exactly be measured in LUFS, no matter how often people will tell you it can. It is a very educated guess and I am thankful it is a good stepping stone in ending the loudness war on streaming services but its not the end of history. Aim for a well balanced track in terms of dynamics and frequency spectrum for a start. Two tracks can both measure at -14lufs but their harmonic distortion and frequency content can make one track feel a lot louder. Get some reference tracks up when you master, level match your track with the reference track and see how loud the rerefence track feels compared to yours at the same LUFS value, then learn from it and see if you can match the perceived volume of it. You will find especially the upper mids and their harmonic content have a massive impact on how loud your track feels. One of my favourite ( and soul destroying) tricks is getting Thriller by Michael Jackson up and level match it with my mix. Almost always Thriller feels louder because Bruce Swedien knew that loudness is in the mix as well and not just in the master and that mix still spanks my mixes ass. Oh and if you ever wondered why mastering engineers of the calibre of Streaky and his peers earn good money...that is why! Their master will sound louder level matched than that of a mastering engineer with less experience in many cases.
Markus Stretz But if i put harmonic my song wll feel harsh and soft and smooth Famous song fell more open and loude even though. I try to have same loudness as their thx for helping ,:
@@musttiii0 harmonics don't necessarily do any of the things you are describing here if done right. If added in small doses (for example by using the mix knob on the plugin so you let some of the initial transient through) they can add movement, excitement etc. which help you achieve a higher perceived volume. Andrew Shep's for instance is a big believer in this form of parallel processing and his stuff is LOUD! That said you don't want to necessarily add them in mastering, that is a mix thing in terms of how you compress, saturate and EQ things.
@@yassinetalbi5884 you can have attack and release also on some dynamic eqs. the difference lies in how a multiband compressor divides the bands and the phase shift it introduces but you are right, both tools are remarkably similar.
This has such a profound effect that even when I play it on small speakers, I can hear a distinct improvement.
I listen on a cheap Chromebook and I could easily hear an improvement ... awesome :-)
Even on my crapy phone speaker
Even on my toaster
Just goes to show you don't have to go down the rabbit hole to hear positive improvements without smearing! Nice one!
I've just thrown this on a track I've been struggling with - it works a treat!

Epic channel mate. Short and informative vids, great delivery, simple tips. Cheers
Hello streaky can you explain the difference between mono & stereo compressor and when to use them
Awesome trick. What you do here Streaky inspires me to work harder! Thx for the video and waiting for more!!!

I've been looking for a quick and easy tutorial on multi-band compression... Thanks for this!
Wow Streaky, I thought it sounded good before the effect. These tips are really bringing up our game.

Usually, people talk about compressing the low end, but in this case, you dynamically expand it. Interesting!
I just recently learned this technique and it makes such a big difference.
Did you post the link for the preset? My attempt was woeful!
Come on guys, lets blow this up for him🔥🔥🔥🔥

Don't own the Pro MB but I've got Izotope Ozone 9. Gonna try this out on some of my mixes

Nice work. That is a great trick to liven things up.
Priceless
Can't see link to saved preset you mention at 1'28" but thanks for this great info
Thank you for now tips Streaky.Greeting from Macedonia
So this adds transient information for the master limiter to read better nice !
Tasty!!!!

Very very effective technique...And the song is totally similar to what I try to produce. So very good example for me.
Thank you sir!!!!
Expand the Lows and Highs, compress the mids. Yeah! 👍
I even don't know what to say... this blowed my mind
Thanks brother

Dope technique for sure… short question why don’t you use the dynamic mode instead of the linear phase mode?
Again! Streaky you legend - thanks mate
Very subtle on my earbuds, gonna try this on one of my tracks, thanks again Streaky! 💕
Just tried it on a track, it worked like a charm.. Definitely gonna use this in the future.

Hi
Streaky when mastering i aim at -14 as other RUclips song but why thier song sound louder even though i aim at -14 and truepeak at -1 celling at 0.1

Hi Streaky thanks for this DOUBLE SMILEY FACE trick. The 1st smiley is on the proMB the 2nd on the client & engineer face 😃 😃 . Have a nice day 👍
Is this achievable with stock ableton multiband?
masselec pls
Preset?
Is there a way to to this if i dont have a MB comp that can expand?
Sounds much better! But what's the difference between doing this with a multiband compressor and a dynamic eq? Can't get my head around it
thinking the same myself
With dynamic EQ you don't have full control like you would have with a MB compessor. With Pro MB you can set your desired attack/release time.
@@yassinetalbi5884 you can have attack and release also on some dynamic eqs. the difference lies in how a multiband compressor divides the bands and the phase shift it introduces but you are right, both tools are remarkably similar.
