    "Pac-Land" is probably the first video game to ever be based on a movie or TV show that also happens to be based on a video game. ;)

      It really feels like Hanna-Barbera added a lot to the Pac-Man mythos, didn't they? Heck, I don't think Pac-Man 2 could have existed without its influence. Lots of stuff was changed, but lots of stuff felt familiar too.

    There are subtile differences between Namco's Pac Land and Midway's in that the sprites for the US arcade release were modified to coincide more with the cartoon series that came before it. Namco's version gives Pac-Man his typical long nose. pie-eyed look and a hat with a feather on it.

  • @floydjohnson7888
    @floydjohnson7888 5 лет назад +11

    When I ran into this in the late '80s, I couldn't help wondering how the negotiations between Hanna- Barbera, Namco, and probably Midway went for that project. A safe bet is that somebody pointed out that the shoe was on the other foot relative to 1982 (the animated series airing on ABC).

    The Spectrum version did have sound (the MSX was a direct port of the Spectrum and the music is identical). The game was also originally going to be full colour, and in 2014 a guy called Ralf fixed it and released the colour version (it's on RUclips).

    Looking at the animation and the expressiveness of the characters, as well as the ghosts and their gadgets, not to mention the sidescrolling gameplay and ESPECIALLY the map it seems to me like this proved to be the inspiration for Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures on SNES.
    Maybe that game should have been called Pac-Land 2.

    • @lunamorley
      @lunamorley 8 лет назад +5

      +Osmund Saddler On one hand, I understand that the original Japanese title "Hello, Pac-Man!" isn't exactly the most...western-geared name in existence, so I could see why they tried changing it but, honestly, it suits the game itself better than any alternative I can think of. I dunno "Pac-Man: Emotional Manipulation Simulator" or "Don't Let Pac-Man Get High off of Strange Fruit" don't really work. Pac-Land 2, is however, a far more appropriate title than Pac-Man 2. Still inaccurate, but there's definitely more correlation.
      EDIT: I just realized too late how old this comment is. Whoops ;P

    • @vittoman4392

      Probably if they called it Pac-Land 2 they were expecting a sequel tp the original (You have to control Pac-Man, the characters and the village is tye same etc.
      A good name would be Pac-Man Interactive or Pac-World (to not be confused with Pac-Man World) Like they did with Super Mario.
      Or also Pac-Man 16.

But it wasn't as bad as when we played Streets of Rage on Genesis where they said the city you're in is actually San Francisco and everyone/ everything in it was gay and wouldn't shut up about it the entire time we played. The Speccy was a low spec computer that was designed primarily to teach people programming and was never intended to be a gaming platform. hence why there are very few colours and only very basic sound on the standard 48K model. However in spite of that many coders found great ways of making fantastic games for the computer. Don't judge the Speccy on this game, as it is a very poor example of what could be achieved on the humble Spectrum. I would suggest having a look at games like Jetpac, Sabre Wulf, Manic Miner, Wanted: Monty Mole and indeed Spy Hunter for the Spectrum to have a better idea of what talented programmers were capable of doing with the ZX Spectrum 48K.

      The Spectrum is my favourite games machine ever, and I feel very lucky to have grown up with it. It is slow, and not cut out for many types of games, but for simple games it works well. Its simple colours and sound give it a charm and magic that no other games machine has.

    • @StarPunch
      @StarPunch 9 лет назад +8

      Not much of one, actually. The main differences are that Pac-Man and his family's eyes were changed to have sclera, and his pets, Chomp-Chomp and Sour Puss, are there to greet him home at the end of each trip. The arcade version here is the American one, and every one afterwards is based on the Japanese version.

    • @gamemaster2819
      @gamemaster2819 4 года назад +1

      Another regional difference is the building in the background. It’s a Christian Church in the Japanese version, but the American version removes the cross to make it more ambiguous.

    Both ZX Spectrum and Famico (or NES)

    -zx spectrum: ugly monochome, but even with the hardware limitations I'm sure that something better could have been done!
    -msx: zx spectrum port but slow as hell
    -amstrad: colourfull as this game must be but with lack of scroll
    -c64: very cool, same arcade feelings (thanks to custom chips)
    -8 bit videgames: in general all good conversions.
    -all the others: did nothing more than the minimum expected of 16-bit machines.

      The Spectrum version was originally going to be full colour, and in fact the colour was restored in 2014 by a guy called Ralf, you can find it on RUclips.

    For some reason, you press buttons to move, and the D-Pad to move, in which the game has weird controls. I did not know this until I played the NES version. Why would someone program controls like this?

      The TG16 version was available on the virtual console in Wii Shops. If it isn't now it could be because Nintendo has pulled it down.
