  • He's already the oldest former president in the U.S. but tomorrow, Jimmy Carter will make more history when he turns 100. For the last 19 months, the 39th president has been in home hospice care. In "Eye on America," Dr. Jon LaPook examines how home hospice is evolving to serve America's growing elderly population.

I glad that Dr. LePook has brought the topic of Hospice out. As a former oncology/hospice nurse, I find that there is much misinformation regarding what hospice is about. I recommend my mother for hospice and she was wonderfully cared for. Her constant pain was controlled and her final days were spent in quiet comfort. I don’t doubt that President Carter is in excellent hands.

I had my father in hospice care the last two months of his life before he passed at 93.. I kept him at home until he became to frail for me to deal with physically but when he refused to eat I knew he was tired and wanted to leave us. I went every day to hospice and just sat with him until he passed. They took wonderful care of him. And he just drifted away in his sleep. And they offer grief counseling to family too.Great staff. It's at home or in a facility and Medicare pays for it.

I’m in my early 50’s and in palliative care. Never felt more safe and calm… my hospice team is absolutely wonderful and I watching hospice related videos on YT, which gives me even more understanding what can I expect and how can I prepare. Death is as important part of life, than being born, still people are so afraid most of times and make little or no preparations apart from saving up for the funeral, if they are in the position to do so. But being prepared to the end of our lives is like preparing to having a baby. Legalities, and finances, making precious memories and make sure everything going as smoothly as possible, it all very important in my opinion.

Here's the catch 22: in dementia patients it is almost impossible to certify that they have six months or less to live, but they really need hospice care preferably at home. The suffering is immense but they fall through the cracks because it is so hard to certify exactly how long they have left in the way they can do it for cancer, heart faikure, etc.

Once on hospice, your medical care is limited to comfort care. If you develop other issues, or you improve, it will not be tended. Hospice is a good thing, but NOT addressing any other issues is not ok

You may be incorrect. My mother has been receiving in home hospice care since February. She has had small episodes that her nurse has deemed more severe. This requires her to be assessed by a physician and has even received X-rays at home for diagnostic purposes. At that point they provide round the clock nursing services. When she improves she goes back to her regular routine. Meanwhile she bathes herself daily with an aide. Has a Chaplain that visits at least monthly. Her hygiene supplies and prescriptions are delivered to the house. Her caregivers are worth their weight in gold. My nephew, his wife and children live in the house, I live next door. I’m not sure I understand what you mean with, “not addressing other issues”.

There is nobody in this country who deserves to live to 105 . Sinatra's "Young at Heart" was sung for you. At 101 next year, I would love to share a vintage Porto from my collection, for 101 contains same number twice. Like you, #1 in my heart and like me, #1 patriot and defender of american democracy, exposing all urban 'garbage' to brainwashed people in Chicago who subscribe to "eat, sleep and fornicate" formula as an ultimate goal.
