For a study abroad program, I would HIGHLY recommend the Associated Kyoto Program (AKP) for 1 year. VERY well organized and VERY nice teachers. I had the time of my life there. Oh, and the host families were wonderful.
I highly agree with you guys when it comes to the difference in friendship between americans and japanese people! actually i was so surprised at how easy it was to make friends when i was studying abroad in america.

My only "true" friend i have made in Japan so far (I have been here for 4 months) is my girlfriend. So if you come to Japan, dont be mad or sad if you cant make a lot of good friends, If you can make one or 2, you are doing better than me! Good luck!

Very interesting topics ! Especially about making friendship with Japanese. I think the definition of "friend" might be very different, too. In our culture, we don't express feelings or what we're thinking very clearly because people express themselves directly tend to be considered selfish here...... I experienced the same difficulty even though I'm Japanese... I sometimes ask myself what the definition of "friend" is here. So it's very important to be able to guess what people think in this country.
Sharla, since you didn't link it, did you ever end up doing a video on your work experience in Japan (part-time, especially)? I can't find it if so. I've heard you need a degree even to work part-time, and was told you also need N2/1 to get even part-time work... I was wondering what your experience was, even in regards to finding a job - did you find it was difficult as a foreign person? I know Japanese companies/employers are allowed to not hire someone simply because they're not Japanese, and I've heard it happens quite often. I'd be interested in knowing what your experience was and how people trying to do something similar to what you did can go about such things.
I was wondering, when they interviewed you, was the interview in English? And also, how did you learn Kanji? I mean, I've taken Japanese classes & learned kanji, but I only know the kanjis in the context we learned in class. How do to you pick up the different pronunciation (?) For the same kanji but different context? (Not really school related, but I'm just curious.) :)

You are so lucky, I'm jelly! I wish I could go back in time and tried my hardest in my studies, graduated early or got a study abroad scholorship, and go to Japan. I didn't give a care in the world of what I wanted and just lived in the moment and now that I realize some stuff, I can't do it because my life is so difficult now. Even when I was in high school I could have graduated about a trimester early and gotten two scholorships for college but I already had my kids so I wouldn't be able to travel. Find a very smart Japanese person and see if they can make a time machine. Heh. I'm not regretting my kids, I'm regretting my choices. How I wish to attend school in Japan. 💔
Wow... you had a pretty long vacation time frame. I only had 3 days or so during summer, and 3 or so during fall, then a 2 week stretch over winter... then again I was in an accelerated program.

I went to Public University. If you go to Public university, I think you can get summer vacation from July 2nd week to the end of August, almost 2 months. And spring holiday start the first of February to the end of March. So we had almost 4 months holidays. But usually it depends the university.

Our high school is getting to a link with a Japanese one, I think that could help get in a university there. I know some local unis offer a course which has a exchange as a essential part of the japanese course and is part of the tuition. All I need is a student visa I think. At least thats how it is in England

by the time you are in uni (granted you arent already) your parents will have a few years to warm up to the idea. slowly show them pictures, talk about it, show videos and they will calm down. important things like safety and transportation is important also. Typically money wise study abroad is pretty "cheap" as long as you get scholarships, good grades and your university has a equal exchange of tuition.

Andrea Nara I have not studied abroad yet but I'm thinking about it too. To be honest, you need a good grade to apply to scholarship. Different programs, scholarships have different requirements, some of them only requires 2.0 GPA ( im talking about the US GPA scale) It is always good to have study abroad experience no matter what :) I'd say looking around for scholarship and opportunities, study abroad is like a good investment for your future.

Yeah they are pretty strict about attendance, most classes you would automatically fail if you missed a certain number of classes. So everyone would just come, and sleep. lol

Most of the time they can be done before you arrive, some of them require that so make sure you contact the language school in advance and ask about that!
