Interesting. I have not heard nor seen such a technique. When it comes to smoking techniques in malay culture, I think most will be familiar with Lemang (glutinous rice in bamboo cooked with firewood) and Pisang Salai (smoked bananas).

Yes this is actually an improvised Chinese technique of wok-smoking that is way simpler and practical for the home cook :-)
