Broken Penn Pursuit IV 4000 a most unusual fishing reel failure how to diagnose

- This reel just arrived in my shop. A broken Penn Pursuit IV4000 the new model. The owner said it wasn't working right and that he attempted to take it apart to find out why. Note - Penn has a one year warranty other rel. if this happens to you, send it back in under the warranty and do not take it apart as that voids the warranty.
Watch this video as I do the diagnosis and determine the most unusual cause of this reel's failure.

Thanks for this video. I had the same problem, sheared pinion gear. Broke off trying to reel in a nice size striper.
YW - glad it helped - Dennis
Just broke mine on a 4lb tautog lmao, so upset don't think I have the receipt to return it. Working through the diagnostic step by step with the vid and sure enough same issue same spot, these probably need a recall.
Nice diagnosis Dennis. This reel will get a second chance for sure.
Yes it will! Parts ordered and waiting on delivery. Thanks
but , there's this guy on YT that makes it look easy, lol
Thanks
Thank you for the great video! I have exactly the same problem on the same real that was new this fall and it sheared on my second decent sized fish. Perhaps 20 hours of fishing total.
If you within a year of purchase, send the reel back to Penn. It should be covered under their product warranty - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle thanks Dennis! I checked their policy and I need to have the receipt and then I need to pay to ship it. Pennsylvania from Oregon which is probably a good bit more expensive and slower than just buying the part and replacing it myself. Two of the same unusual flaw in the same real makes me suspect a design flaw or a faulty part. Have a great day! Keep up the great work!
WOW Is Right ! Thanks Dennis. Great Job of Investigating. That Was A New One. I Wonder How That Happened ? One More Piece of Advice Stay Away from the Eagle Claw Pack It ! I Snapped the Telescoping Rod in Two By Setting the Hook on A Small Bass ! Not The Tip Either about 2 ft. Down From It ! Junk ! The Reel I Don't Know Yet ! It's On A Different Pack Rod Now. We'll See Next Year What Happens With the Reel.
Glad you enjoyed it. The last rod I had snap on me was a Penn Slammer that broke midway through a cast from the surf this summer. No stress or anything unusual. Just broke in half. Go figure!
Dennis, first of all, thank you for your videos. They have given me the confidence to work on my reels. I picked up a group of reels this weekend at an estate sale just to clean, take apart and give away or sell at a garage sale. One of them was a Mitchell 408S. I looked at your library of videos and couldn’t find this model. So apparently it’s pretty rare. Can you tell me anything about it? Thank you in advance. Tim
I don't have the 408 on video. I will add it if/when one comes in for service. Thanks for the note - Dennis
I bought 5 Pursuit IV 4000 this year and two of them sheared the pinion when reeling in 1.5 pounds fishes. My cheap Daiwa with same rods can reel in much heavy fish. It is quality issue. There are many reports about sheared pinions on Pursuit IV at amazon and youtube.
I've heard that as well. I am not sure when you purchased these, but it sounds like something I would send to Penn under a warranty claim.
Thanks for sharing - Dennis
Jeez you'd think there would be a little bit more quality parts at that price point. Looks like it's a $60-$65 reel. I know it's not a super high price point or anything, but to have the pinion gear shear off like that on a relatively unscathed reel seems to me like the quality isn't great. What does Penn just get to stamp their name on it and mark up the price 3X? Feel like id expect that to happen on a $20.00 Walmart combo.
There has got to be more to the story here. I am looking forward to hearing what actually happened. This certainly didn't snap off while causally flipping a lure. Thanks
I also had a sheared pinion on my new old stock Pursuit iii 4000. I sent a question to Dennis to see if he had seen this before (about 2 1/2 months ago). Mine sheared during a fight with a 2 lb fish in heavy current, not hard enough to cause the drag to kick in. Easy fix, but I am disappointed. The 4000 and 3000 share the same pinion gear. The cross section of the gear is pretty thin. Mine broke in exactly the same place. I think it is a combination of frame flex and weak design of the pinion gear. I then had a Fierce iii 4000 break 3 of the teeth on the main gear (same fishing situation). I have now stepped up to Daiwa BG's (much thicker and matched gear set up) and am very happy with them. Sad to say but I think the Pursuit/Fierce/Battle are not robust enough, and if it has to be a Penn, you have to go all the way up to the Spinfisher ($170+) to get a robust reel with proper gears.
I remember the question and your situation. This does sound like a manufacturer's design defect. Thanks for sharing the information - Dennis
