It´s lovely to hear Amy Goodman speaking about Dorothy Day. You notice her admiration for her, and I love that.

The Pope is a leader who is speaking to us about putting our faith into action. He is doing just that by rejecting the luxuries of the Vatican and speaking up for the poor and neglected. I don't see anything humanistic about that - he's following Jesus. He's trying to change the Catholic Church but one person - not even the Pope - can change hundreds of years of that dysfunction.

I consider Francis a Social Marxist and not a spiritual leader. His ascension to the papacy is highly questionable.

I sincerely don't want to sound...."cynical" but all the videos and articles about the Pope NEVER mention the global context in which all his words and actions take place. What I want to say is that it is quite easy, Yes, easy, for him to talk about the abolition of the death penalty, about climate change, about poverty and so on. (maybe the Popes before him could be criticized for doing so). But what does Pope Francis actually risks with his words and actions? Nothing. Every day which passes the catholic church looses a church somewhere in the world because empty, every day someone stops feeling like an active member of the catholic church. The Pope needs new she eps. That is one truth. And where is the Self-criticism of the Church? Saying that horrible things happened in Latin America IN THE PAST is just not good enough. The only true step would be to admit that the Vatican is a financially very strong institution, nearly an entreprises, possessing estates all over the world, working with dictators and its goal is to perpetuate catholicism rather than other religions, occidental culture rather than eastern. As long as Pope Francis is not able to see himself belonging to the Leaders who control us and manipulate us and decides to deconstruct the Church, there will be no truth at all coming out of his mouth. I hope wikileaks will publish the Vatican's implication in the USA/Cuba new relationship. I cannot see which role the Vatican played.

you are absolutely right. no wonder that there are so many conspiracy theorists (who are often right) when you consider how much information is NOT told to the public. what precise role has the Pope played in the USA/Cuba reconciliation? Greetings from Geneva

+Anaiis Salles Heehee! When I was six back in 1970, I thought that flying cars were impressive. Where the hell is my flying car? Yea...I am a cynic, and with good reason. Hijacking the yearning of billions of people for a better world is a poops forte.
This is how conventional political leaders operate. They have no experience aside from initiating policies from a very high perch---and then they expect compliance from all "the little people."
Like Obombya saying, "Well, I'm a community organizer with a little time served as a state and national senator, and I know how to wipe out the poverty of five billion people."...Insane on the face of it.
Memo to Obama, the Pope, and the UN: Before you tie the planet to a carbon tax, cap and trade, the universal redistribution of energy and food, and massive regulations governing industrial production and consumption-limits, demonstrate your ability to take a single country, a single province, a single city, even a single town, and improve the standard of living there. Let's see you do it. Let's see how you do it.
This is what any reasonable cynic would demand.

Marco, I'm live in Argentina and we know pretty well how PERNICIOUS this hypocrit is. We suffered him calling FOR HOLY WAR AGAINST GAY MARRIAGE IN 2010. And that's the least problematic of his positions I tell you. He's just a big mouth leading an institution totally unable (and unwilling) to uproot pedophilia, misoginy and hatred from withing.

The bug-eyed fanatics facists also, arrested St John The Apostle. Then, the fascist state of the time, tried to boil him in boiling oil but, they could not kill him, -his guardian angel saved him? using a supernatural energy forcefield so he would not boil to death, or how?- kind of like Holy Prophet of Old; Daniel in the Lion's Den, too, as it was not his time to be called up to His Majesty but, He had other things in mind for him to do; St John, THEY then proceeded to send him off to Patmos, where then, while living in the Cave, now an Orthodox Monestery in Greece, going all the way back 2000 years to Holy St John who lived there; well, GOD gave him visions and told him all about The core of fascim bulle systems in all ages: the spirit of meaness, unkindess, greed and arrogance: the spirit of antichist; He also warned in his Letters that was already in the world, he said. So, GOD told Him and all of us, all this stuff Merton and Ms Day learned much later, already back then; the nature of radical bug-yed fanatic extremist facistoidal states and unjust social systems the breed sin; evil. war, hunger, suffering, social inequlality and injustice in economic and legal questions. It's nothing new, as King Solomon put it; nothing really knew under the sun. But, St John also wrote about Utopia, a Utopic City in The Future: New Jerusalem, a city of Peace, mutual respect and civility, that will come after Babylon The Whore has her fascist day; or, so, atleast many interpet these Words, that Christians say, are GOD's Words given to St John and, not merely a man's words; John's. Think about it: will Eden and Original Innocence and Harmony one day be restored and Mercy and/or Justice served from His Majesty; who has a Book, St John says called: THE BOOK OF LIFE?

I do not consider Francis praise about Merton to be positive. I consider Francis to be a Social Marxist spokesman more than a religious leader. Although Merton indicated some Marxist aspirations to be similar to Monastic life, he also emphasized these similarities would not work anywhere else.

One of those names is not like the other. King, Day, and Merton worked for peace. Lincoln initiated a war of choice against his fellow Americans attempting to exercise their Constitutional right to separate from the Union.

It seems he became a humanist and forgot about God. He strayed thinking all religions are the same. Dorothy Day is a different story. She practiced her faith and worked for the good of people in the image of Christ.

I agree and his later years are suspect. It is probably no coincidence the secular humanists and Marxists praise him.

You can’t recognize his greatness because like all geniuses he hits targets most can’t see. You must raise above the accident of your birth ... everything that rises must converge.

Although I have found solace in Merton's Contemplative writings,,,I too have had concerns about Merton's later humanist inclinations. His later views are too 60's "kumbaya" and I have wondered if he was adrift.
