@49:40 no you need something else with the bounce land to be infinite. Play land (kodama trigger, BL trigger) land comes back to your hand, you put the land back into play WITH kodama's ability. then you only get the BL trigger because kodama's ability is what put it into play. Sakashima solves this by alternating kodama abilities to play the land
Even if indestructible did prevent loyalty counters going down from damage, Anara still wouldn't be able to protect Planeswalkers from combat because it's only on your turn that they get indestructible
@@TheChibidono As long as they're still planeswalkers, if they have no loyalty, they are still put into the graveyard as a state-based action. This is _not_ a destroy effect, so indestructible won't prevent it.
@@therealax6 Exactly, even if they're indestructible they still get removed due to 0 loyalty. And indestructible does not prevent combat damage being dealt, that's why all the abilities of Gideon cards need to specify that they prevent damage as well. Otherwise, loyalty would be removed during combat in the same way as if the planeswalker was attacked. My first comment might not have been clear enough. I meant that planeswalkers can be involved in combat on your turn as well but would still take combat damage.
On the topic of Halana, as said by MaRo and as demonstrated by the card Rabid Bite the jargon for a creature dealing it's power to a creature is "bite". Not a big deal of course, just saying.
sakashima+kodama is "put every permanent with 6 cmc or less into the battlefield" when you copy kodama with sakashima. sakashima comes out as a 6 cmc that triggers kodama 1, then kodama 1 puts a 6 cmc card into the battlefield which triggers kodama 2, then put another 6 cmc into the battlefield which triggers kodama 1, etc. kodama is primarily scary because it has such a wide range of cards that it combos with (and in particular, field of the dead makes it incredibly strong. the kodama+bounce+field combo is especially strong because it's difficult to interact with lands, so while it is a 3 card combo, two of them are lands (and land tutors are pretty cheap compared to other types of tutors too.)
I built Sakashima and Kodama, it's absolutely nuts. The Sakashima enters as a copy of Kodama which puts a trigger for 6cmc on the stack, each thing that enters with the trigger, triggers the other kodama meaning you just put all the permanents in your hand with 6cmc or less on the battlefield. If any of those draw cards...you keep going, it's great fun.
So when it says “so long as it wasn’t put there by this effect” it just means the effect on that card? So you can have “2” kodama’s and they can trigger each other with their effects ?

If Wizards ever went completely insane and printed a card that said: "{T}, Sacrifice CARDNAME: Destroy all creatures. Slurk + Basri's Lieutenant + Renate + Sac Outlet is Inf +1+1 counters on slurk and Lieutenant, that is a lot though, maybe partner with Tymna so you have access to black sac outlets + tutors, as well as white for Basri's Lieutenant + the Ajanai's that care about +1+1 counters
I personally have been playtesting and trying to finish a Kodama and Sakashima legendary "super buddies" deck. Clone legendary creatures with Sakashima, put a clone in with Kodama when Sakashima enters, and then you clone the clones with more clones. It's another take on what Jimmy was playing in the recent Game Knights but with green :)
@@psy_p I'm focusing more on my legendary creatures. I played a test game with a few friends and I got a right of replication to resolve on Sakashima that was copying "Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma" so I just ended up with 6 more and it was hilarious. My curve starts with Kinnan and Thrasios at 2 and works my way up to most of my clones and other legendries at 4. I say it was another take on Jimmy's deck because while it can copy everyone elses commanders, I am taking it in my own direction.
With the east tree boi partner it with szat, he creates 0/1 tokens for lands, card draw to keep your hand full and his ultimate pulls commanders from the command zone, which should etb trigger the east tree. I used just the cards from commander legends to make that deck it was kinda dirty good.
Not to be that guy, but technically Dreadbore would work since it's not your turn when they cast it or they can just wait till until it's someone else's turn if they had flash.
I've been tuning Armix and Anara... It's actually pretty sweet... Anara ensures that Armix can swing freely when they're both in play. I'll definitely be adding Worldslayer :P Thx!
I was surprised by the lore check fail for J&J here but, everyone, do yourselves a favor and read Josh's response on Twitter. He's a class act, a man of integrity, someone who can admit he made a mistake, and address it head-on. Situations like this don't build character, they reveal it. And Josh has plenty of it.
I know this will have to be for a far off episode, but I would love to see an episode about the history of edh. How the meta has changed, what was strong at the time, when certain rules changes happen. I know they might not see this, but I just thought it'd be a good suggestion for a future episode!
29:50 I don't think it works as you intended; the egg's ability is s worded in such a way you add mana and draw a card without a moment between those actions to put the egg on top of the library. It's not like Chromatic Star, where the mana ability and the draw a card part are separated, this is one simultaneous action.
Reyhan and Slurrk are so good together. Reyhan alone is strong, but having a second commander that also does counters is better. If you care about counters, they do it all and have two good colors to do it in.
I have built a mono green commander deck with gilanra amd kodama. It ramps fast and then uses gilanra to cast kodama and draw. But what really works is when you apex devastator and get non stop permanents cheated out for the cost of 1... gorgeous
Ha. Coming back to this video to remember something that was said during the Kodama section, and it's so funny hearing them talk about how people were saying Kodama would/should eat a ban. Like... damn, dudes. People REALLY thought Kodama of the East Tree was banworthy :p Shit's funny, man.
I put Kodama in my elfball Tishana deck and it is bonkers since i always have a lot of cards in hand and very likely to have at least one of the ''Whenever u cast a creature spell/a creature etbs draw a card'' effects (or Tatyova) as a card draw engine on the battlefield. It doesn't go infinite technically since u have to pay mana to cast the elves and because there is a low chance of both not drawing a land/elf card for a few turns and not having any land/elf cards left in hand. It did draw me almost my entire library (i stopped cause i realized i didn't need to draw more to win) though a few times so this ''combo's'' efficiency can reach that infinite level when u consider all the other cards that u can draw that synergize greatly with it like Lotus Cobra, Tatyova, Aesi or other similar card draw engines. Halana goes pretty well on my Thantis Deathtouch deck. No need to risk my wondeful creatures with using the fight cards anymore :)
I've been wondering what to do with Gilanra, and this video has helped me! I considered my Animar deck, but I still want cheaper spells despite it enabling the cast of higher cmc cards. However, my Zaxara deck is mana HUNGRY, and Gilanra is a great fit to help me get some consistent card draw in there.
Regarding 31:40. I disagree. I like the fact, that green can now play with artifacts. Normally, green ramps through landbased ramp anyway, since that's saver. So I like his design. But I get your point. I would love to see white getting more stronger and unique commanders aswell.
I wonder how the old kodama for it to work like Josh described because I'm pretty sure dryad only affects lands on the battlefield and you can't fetch any lands with it.
When JLK is subtly telling us to build a mass destruction Ardenn and Anara partnered deck. Some people just want to watch the world burn. I am one of them.
It's like when they have episodesabout the social contract they say "don't do this" but then in set reviews they can't help but tell you the most busted thing they can think of even of it is MLD.
Kodama, Panharmonicon, Warstorm Surge, Phyrexian Juggernaut. Deal 10 poison on etb? Also drop two 6 drops. Kodama definitely runs out of cards, so I paired it with Ludevic. Why? Card draw and Goblin Welder. Kodama doesn't care HOW the permanent entered the battlefield.
23:35 Not only are Alena and Halana partners, I'm pretty sure Halana was supposed to be black. Also, I wish they had partner with instead of just partner.
So, I'm still a bit confused on Mana costs in abilities. For instance; Shalai is a potential commander being legendary, but only has white in it's cost. It has green in it's ability cost however, does that mean it could commander a green white? Or just exist as a creature in a green white?
If I remember correctly, on the stats episode black was the color with the most wins. Are you going to do the stats again to see if green took the crown? What cards do y’all think might have put green on top if this is true?

29:20 isn't Darkwater Egg's ability a mana ability which doesn't use the stack?
It has draw a card tacked onto it which causes it to enter the stack
@@killjoy7782 It's a mana ability, even though it also draws you a card. It doesn't use the stack. (They have a ruling on Gatherer just to make it clear.)
An activated ability is a mana ability if it's not a loyalty ability, it could add mana to a player's mana pool and it doesn't have any targets. It doesn't matter what else it does. If Wizards ever went completely insane and printed a card that said: "{T}, Sacrifice CARDNAME: Destroy all creatures. Add {W}.", then that would be a mana ability, for instance, and you wouldn't be able to respond to it.
KODAMA'S REACH!! Jimmy, you went there, and I couldn't be happier! Haha 😄
Your opponents have to play a lot of 4-5 drops for that to work properly tho...
Kamahl Combo: Play Spellbinder and imprint Savage Beating and equip it to an indestructible land creature. Infinite combat phases.
I just finished my Sakashima and Kodama deck a few days ago. It gets crazy when you get Kodama and 2 copies of it.
I built Gilanra/Kodama the other day. It's the Timmiest deck ever and I love it
I was surprised by the lore check fail for J&J here but, everyone, do yourselves a favor and read Josh's response on Twitter.
He's a class act, a man of integrity, someone who can admit he made a mistake, and address it head-on.
Situations like this don't build character, they reveal it. And Josh has plenty of it.
Would you mind posting a link?
I know this will have to be for a far off episode, but I would love to see an episode about the history of edh. How the meta has changed, what was strong at the time, when certain rules changes happen. I know they might not see this, but I just thought it'd be a good suggestion for a future episode!
Kamahl plus Moraug in my Radha, Heart of Keld deck is horrifying. I had a crazy board state and had like 8 combat phases
29:50 I don't think it works as you intended; the egg's ability is s worded in such a way you add mana and draw a card without a moment between those actions to put the egg on top of the library. It's not like Chromatic Star, where the mana ability and the draw a card part are separated, this is one simultaneous action.
Did you noticed that Kodama has Reach? Kodama's reach!
I'll be honest with you. I didn't realize that when the card was first spoiled.
People REALLY thought Kodama of the East Tree was banworthy :p
Shit's funny, man.
When you watch and you already have a Alena, Halana Deck.
Regarding 31:40.
I disagree. I like the fact, that green can now play with artifacts. Normally, green ramps through landbased ramp anyway, since that's saver.
So I like his design. But I get your point. I would love to see white getting more stronger and unique commanders aswell.
Halana & Triniform are def going in my Thromok deck~
I wonder how the old kodama for it to work like Josh described because I'm pretty sure dryad only affects lands on the battlefield and you can't fetch any lands with it.
Thrasios indeed WAS reprinted for the Commander Legends Collectors Booster Boxes.
Jimmy's voice is canonically Jace's voice now.
Kamahla and Sakashima is my duo to build a deck around.
Tolarian Academy founds out that Kodama of the East Tree + Toggo + Gruul Turf = Infinty Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!
I laughed so hard at Josh's face at 55:11 lollll
Josh’s Kermit voice was eerily good lol
You guys missed your chance to sing "A Certain Shade of Green" by Incubus!!! Sorry, continue the episode... lol
Halana with tokens could be fun. Scute swarm could be spicy.
so you're saying that kodama is the new chulane/muldrotha/yarok, meaning it just needs to be removed immediately.
Divine Visitation is nonbo-ish with Ich-Tekik, because he makes the golems bigger with his trigger.
Kamahl and Akroma are an awesome pair, I'm really surprised you guys missed it. Otherwise, great show!
I love the ads, I watched them twice
Kodama,
Panharmonicon,
Warstorm Surge,
Phyrexian Juggernaut.
