As so many authors have had a writing schedule it is clear that they work- for them. Most like Ursula Le Guin or Ernest Hemingway liked to get up early, but not all have done so. It is whatever you can do to facilitate 'getting into the zone'. That mental state of focused concentration on a task or performance. Once there as a writer your ideas just come, the events in your story just seem to flow naturally, almost as if you were a scribe writing down another's story as they describe it. In the zone you become dissociated from time, hours may pass as if minutes, or fractions of a second pass as if minutes. Being able to enter 'the zone' is probably a characteristic of anyone who has ever been great at anything, from writing a romance to motorcycle racing. I think you were there while writing some of your science fiction novel.

Oh I definitely was. As I came to realize very quickly when I had to switch projects getting into the flow of work is not something that can be forced, it can only happen naturally, even if there are ways of helping it along.
