Stayed on this camp site for 2 nights in early September for €25 per night (camper and 2 adults) and had a nice pitch with ample space, maybe you were unlucky with the allocated pitch. It is a busy campsite as were 2 others we tried before settling here. Pool was warm and as you said kept immaculately clean. Toll only applies one way on the bridge and reduces by 50% in mid September. Ille de Ray is a great island for cycling.
"Grumpy Old Men" today yourself and Charlie. Ile de Ré is a very French resort, makes very few concessions to non French people and it was Bastille Day. I hope the rest of the tour picked up!

thanks for watching James.. WE love Ille de Rea stay safe
Tolls seem a bit steep. Pity about the cramped campsite
We stayed off most of the toll roads but its worth the once off payment to get onto the island Thanks for watching
