ouch 6:20 looked painful .. poor little fella thank you for all tutorials, just starting out with blender and unity and having all tuts in one place on how to make a character from start to finish and even import to unity is just amazing. not to mention they're all free
Dude, you are a genius! Blender is such a great software, but for a beginner its very difficult to understand -- but with your explainations its soooo easy
Great rigging series. Feeling very confident that my workflow will transfer nicely into Blender, from painting weights to building control curves. Though, will have to devise a simpler way of performing the actual swapping in of the custom bone shape. Thanks for helping in my transition!
Thank you so much! I learned a lot from your videos! Please don't stop making videos, I'm new to blender and I want to make models and animate and stuff! Great job on videos too!
4:45: on newer versions of Blender you can do this by selecting all verts in your mesh and right clicking -> Merge Vertices -> Merge Veritices by Distance. You will get the same message on the bottom that x number of vertices have been removed.
Instead of dragging him to the ground, wouldn't it be more precise if you select the whole object, go under Object -> Transform -> align objects; then select negative side, 3D cursor, z axis in the menu on the left?
looking forward to learning how to rig a charecter. its one thing using rigify or something from makehumens but its another to actually do a rig that the animator understands
So I was just doing finishing touches to my model and I realized they were overlapped. So I did the remove doubles thing and removed over 10,000 vertices.... which meant my character was quadrupled. SO glad I did that.
So, when I go to move the origin to where I want it, and then clear location, it goes right back to where I moved it from? I don't understand why? Help?? I forgot to put the plane I sculpted it from in the center when I started could that have something to do with it
I extracted 3D model from Deer Avenger 4. Problem is that it got imported into blender without bones, but some rubbish around the model. Also the model is not in a T pose, but in one of the gun holding+running animation frames. Is it possible for skeleton rig at such state?
hello and thanks for the great tutorials! i'd like to ask if it's possible that after i rig my character i go back and make adjustments to it, e.g. separate parts and work again on them..? thanks!
Hello first thanks for the tutorials, second i want to know if u have a simple video of rigging, and who to make a resorption animation in blender like propeller (fan) animation.
thanks for all of these videos they helped me so much , but i was asking about how can join hair to the character body to be one object when i do this with ctrl + j it disappears
Is it possible at the end of the rigging process to copy and paste the rig to another model I'm planning in having my character switch outfits so I'm keeping 1 untouched naked model so would it work if I transferred the right to the same model but with different clothes?
Hello Darin! Is it possible to add the skeleton of a character that I already have and combine it with am item that I'm creating? I am trying to create an archer for which I already have the model but the bow that I'm creating needs to be attached to the hand.
+Darrin Lile I tried to import the existing model and I saw that it works. But since I just started this,I don't know how it will come up in the end. I will probably have more questions in the future since this is my 1st real project and it gas to be perfect. Thank you for the fast reply
Im building my second model now and I was just curious if there is special reason you dont use the rigify generated rig? I was thinking about testing out that this time around.
shinmusashi44 I did a mix the last time, cause as you said, if I tried to attach the rig to my model, all hell broke lose. So I added the base rig, got rid of the bones I didnt need and attached it the old fashion way, and it worked well! :) Then created the CTRL for the bones manually, afterwards.
I'm making a wolf character in blender v2.79 but I don't get the option of 'remove doubles' in vertices menu. Does that mean my character has no double vertices? (Or is something wrong with my wolf?)
darrin i need a little help ive been following this tutorial on how to rigging bones the problem is i put a 100% weight on the finger but when i try to move that part the finger doesn't move well with the bone, although i already selected all of that finger's verticies, still it doesnt go on with the movement of the bones that fast, it moves slow like it doesnt have too much weight on it, even though i put a 100% weight. how can i fix that darrin?
Excuise me sir, for example; when we create a character wears shoulder armor how colud we persist of deforming armor when we raise our chars arms up? do you know any tutorial or courses about it?
A quick request for help: When I go to pose mode, my armature bone Foot.L points to it's right. I try to roll the bone on the axis, but I'm always a few points off the grid once I return to pose mode. I've also tried to center the origin, and I noticed its not exactly in the center. Basically I need to know which direction on the Z and X axis is the bone supposed to bend, how to fix any issues with geometry origin, and the axis rotation.
Hello I up-grade to Windows 10Pro and isn’t showing thumbnail images anymore, as I did in Win7, the content & preview for “ .blend” files in the folder I have saved them. I can see any PNG or JPEG thumbnail & preview …Please advice!!! It is a great tool for selecting the right file faster! Thank you, Mic
+Gospel Earth Hi, binding multiple objects to one rig can get tricky. So I combine all the pieces of the character into one object before rigging. Makes things a bit easier. Thanks for watching!!
Could I just continue with this from the Blender Render engine, before Baking the imgs, you mentioned one could do that if it was animation only! After baking and noding in the Cycles Engine, it seams my character is way less detailed in Object Mode, the bump information is 50x less effectfull, it seams the baking reduced its effect.. I managed to check via the Render View also, and the datails are very different from before baking and after baking?! Perhaps this is normal, and smoothing out is one of the reasons to node via the Cycles Engine?!:) It seams only one of the Slots are active at once when Im in the Cycles Engine, even after all the noding.. I think my character looked better before baking though, perhaps I did it wrong.. but I went over it a couple of times now, and I think I did it right! But yes, Im not sure if this makes sense or not, but Im thinking about just going back to the stage right before baking, and start rigging in the Blender Render enging???!:)
Can you go through all the facial shapekeys please, that seems to be missing in other series poeple tend to do.......i.e. wards character creation series, that help me in my workflows
Please help! I downloaded a character model online and imported it into the BGE, and I rigged it and all. (And the rigging works. I can move it around and pose it just as usual) But whenever I play the game the mesh seems to just forget about the armature and revert back to it's original pose. The head bones connected to the neck bone. The neck bones connected to the spine bone. the spine bones connected to the.... haha great tutorials by the way. :)
I am trying to do this with a spider creature thing and mine is going to be a lot more complex haha. Hopefully it won't be too hard to animate a six legged creature.
Thanks! I have one issue. I have issues moving the armature WITH the model I made to a separate scene. Personally I don't understand how this can be difficult, but can anyone help?
+HD_boy12 HF make sure the last object selected before the joining is the object with the subdivision modifier. When you join objects they appear to take on the modifiers of the last selected object in the joining.
this is a random question. But, I am seeing that Blender has all the capabilities that 3DS max and maya have here, so what's the advantage of using this over Autodesk and vice versa?
+Arakmatzu Blender is free and open source. Granted, open-source is only interesting if you're a coder. But the free part is probably the most attractive for hobbyist modelers.
Blender is Free and in my opinion the best program out there. The interface is easy to understand, the program's updates are most of the time amazing, like they add new stuff and... Stuff lol. Maya is just 5000€ more expensive xD
Why did you extrude the bones for the spine/neck but not extrude TO the arm and legs.. so why extrude in certain places and not others where you added a new bone with Shift A?
thank you man your the best one who explain every without hiding anythings and also you uploaded every thing by arranging thnks lot
ouch 6:20 looked painful .. poor little fella
thank you for all tutorials, just starting out with blender and unity and having all tuts in one place on how to make a character from start to finish and even import to unity is just amazing. not to mention they're all free
Lol pls.... "Looked painful..." Jesus xD pls xD
hahah
"I'm gonna move it (armature) up into the character"
Simplified
"I'm going to insert this bone into the child"
FBI OPEN UP
haha
Dude, you are a genius! Blender is such a great software, but for a beginner its very difficult to understand -- but with your explainations its soooo easy
Really incredible professional tutorial here! Outstanding!
In my opinion this is the best tutorial for rigging. Keep it up.
Thank God for your Blender character creation/rigging tutorials...
I still watch this rigging tutorial to this day as a reference... thank you
Great rigging series. Feeling very confident that my workflow will transfer nicely into Blender, from painting weights to building control curves. Though, will have to devise a simpler way of performing the actual swapping in of the custom bone shape.
Thanks for helping in my transition!
Darren , ur tutorials are so good , i have bought 2 of ur udemy tutorials and has helped me a lot!
you are awesome. seriously. awesome. thank you so much. I am at the beginner skill level and you are so great at explaining the steps.
Thank you so much! I learned a lot from your videos! Please don't stop making videos, I'm new to blender and I want to make models and animate and stuff! Great job on videos too!
thanks man , for all the videos u uploaded concerning this character , the rigging and the animation tips and everything , it helped me a looooot :D

i liked how you did your characters textures, i wouldnt think of doing it that way i.e. in blender internal, then plug em into nodes for cycles
Great series! I use 3ds Max but the ideas basically transfer easily. Thanks Alot!
you have a awesome voice! Well explained! pacing is super! Thanks

I love your voice
Finally i went through a part without any problems
nice tutos Darrin thx
So helpful tutorials, thank you so much!!!
having sound and solid references is always great....sometimes i feel that im making unnecessary seams
Very helpful!
I think this is a gorgeous work ¡¡
thanks for sharing the process mate
Bless :D
Thank You for this tutorial! very helpful!
thanks you so much, your videos help me .. from indonesia
Your voice is amazing
So, when I go to move the origin to where I want it, and then clear location, it goes right back to where I moved it from? I don't understand why? Help??
I forgot to put the plane I sculpted it from in the center when I started could that have something to do with it
Does weight painting don't work anymore like that in 2.8, because everything worked well in 2.79 with this whole tutorial?
I extracted 3D model from Deer Avenger 4. Problem is that it got imported into blender without bones, but some rubbish around the model. Also the model is not in a T pose, but in one of the gun holding+running animation frames. Is it possible for skeleton rig at such state?
your so helpful. but i need help please. x ray dose not work when Iclick it. am i missing somthing? the xray botten just makes one dot
helpful up to now. thank you
Ever green tutorials, my man. Removed 99 vertices!
hello and thanks for the great tutorials! i'd like to ask if it's possible that after i rig my character i go back and make adjustments to it, e.g. separate parts and work again on them..? thanks!
8:51 the correct anatomical term is skull. the whole rig is like the character's skeleton.
Thanks Darrin. Is there any possibility that you could share your 3D model to facilitate learning ? Thanks again.
Hello first thanks for the tutorials, second i want to know if u have a simple video of rigging, and who to make a resorption animation in blender like propeller (fan) animation.
hello darrin i need your help when i want to view my character my character will drag
Sorry English

Did you rig the straps?if you didn’t it won’t be that physical and good
thanks for all of these videos they helped me so much , but i was asking about how can join hair to the character body to be one object when i do this with ctrl + j it disappears

+Dex Wishes blender.stackexchange.com/questions/7461/how-to-copy-a-rig-to-another-mesh
Does the end rig result in one root bone? When exporting to Unreal Engine only one root bone is allowed and rigify produces hundreds.
Hello Darin! Is it possible to add the skeleton of a character that I already have and combine it with am item that I'm creating? I am trying to create an archer for which I already have the model but the bow that I'm creating needs to be attached to the hand.
+Adrian Milea Yes, you could parent the bow to the hand bone.
+Darrin Lile I tried to import the existing model and I saw that it works. But since I just started this,I don't know how it will come up in the end. I will probably have more questions in the future since this is my 1st real project and it gas to be perfect. Thank you for the fast reply

nice videos, gratz!!!
these eyes dont blin... it gets me nervous XD
Im building my second model now and I was just curious if there is special reason you dont use the rigify generated rig? I was thinking about testing out that this time around.
***** Sometimes rigity doesn't work. It'll destroy the model and not move right.

why isnt this model on ur page? :S
Hi Darrrin Lile can i ask expect from the simplicity joining to one object in a model. why do you join to to one object?
+Gospel Earth Hi, binding multiple objects to one rig can get tricky. So I combine all the pieces of the character into one object before rigging. Makes things a bit easier. Thanks for watching!!
Hi Darrin can i also ask did you learn rigging by your own knowledge or you learnt it from a someone just curious because you know what you are doing.

What should I do if I have trace back error when I'm trying to generate a character rig?
Did you merge the inner and outer eye pieces? I find that when I do that the character's eyes turn ghostly white
After Remove Doubles. My geometry looks bad. How can i fix it? or should i ignore it?.
U r amazing man! Thank you!
Wait, you joined the teeth to the character? When did you do that???
This is the latest version of Blender, right? I'm using v2.78 currently.
hi Darren were can I download the start file for this character?
The head bones connected to the neck bone. The neck bones connected to the spine bone. the spine bones connected to the.... haha great tutorials by the way. :)
I am trying to do this with a spider creature thing and mine is going to be a lot more complex haha. Hopefully it won't be too hard to animate a six legged creature.

Thanks for tutorial.
thank you so much very helpful
thanks for your videos mate realy helpfull :)
Thanks! I have one issue. I have issues moving the armature WITH the model I made to a separate scene. Personally I don't understand how this can be difficult, but can anyone help?
If it's already successfully rigged, and you linked/ appended it, then you need to make a proxy for the armature using Ctrl + Alt + P
hello do you carryout courses for animation
Will the rig work if exported to Unity?
if you want to start rigging quickly, the rigging starts at #05:30 minutes
Pleas help! i have a character that only need the arms with a supdivision but if i connect everything the supdivision is gone
+HD_boy12 HF make sure the last object selected before the joining is the object with the subdivision modifier. When you join objects they appear to take on the modifiers of the last selected object in the joining.

those bends on knees and elbows, what is their purpose? I'm guessing better stretching?
When we add Inverse Kinematics, the bend will tell Blender which way the joint is supposed to bend, so it doesn't bend the knee backwards.
Darrin Lile I see! thanks!
Why did you extrude the bones for the spine/neck but not extrude TO the arm and legs.. so why extrude in certain places and not others where you added a new bone with Shift A?
Vertigo Studios I'm wondering the same thing...
how come my character split in half when I hit ctrl a and set rotation
I cant see my eye texture in cycles render, what am I missing?
thank u so much..
Can I get a uhhhhhhhhhhh A R M A T U R E L E S S pizza?
what the hell does that mean?
when i move the root the rest bones dont follow what am i doing wrong?
the g in ctrl g means group
im trying to rig mario his legs attach directly to his torso
i tried connecting all the objects and it wont let me!
why didn't you just use the bge?
What is the meaning of rigging
What kind of software do you use?
It's in the title.......:P
Golden Da Pirate I thought that's the technique name, I'm noob in this stuff... LOL
Oh lol
How can I learn blender...
lol! removed 2500 vertices. Oh so much to learn...
0 in mine. I just discovered the merge today, but I've always merge overlapping before manually. Did it the hard way *facepalm
I understand you xD. I did the same at my first huge model
Also, for comedic reasons, if you're following along, instead of naming it "upLeg.L", name it "THICC THIGH.L".
How do we make Anime Hair??
Any one have a .blend of the character so I can just do the rigging and skip the modelling?
Can do download model?
MatheusFOXY Dutra Can do English?
XD He said bone
Tidiest Flyer
How is the word "bone" funny?
Diamond Humbug ....
6:21 ouch
