You don't split the gasket!!!! It's made like so when you cut the liner the gasket, onside is on the outside and the other side goes on the inside of the pool. Then you screw the frame and the skinner box together. The gasket makes a water tight seal.
Goood observation! The skimmer butterfly gasket is made for a metal wall pool. The butterfly gasket goes over the metal wall and liner to prevent water from rusting the metal wall. Splitting the gasket in this instance is acceptable, otherwise you need to cut the skimmer hole bigger to fit t butterfly gasket. It would be difficult to cut accurately. I usually buy the old style s piece gasket to do this. This is done so you have a guide to cut the hole in the liner, as it’s not made for a soft side pool. The problem with installing in an Intex (or Bestway) pool is you have is you have to lower the water significantly, therefore I covered my skimmer hole and went back to the Intex style skimmer. 😊

I ended up reversing the setup when I installed my skimmer. I talked to the local pool supply owner & she recommended putting the skimmer at the out flow opening. I did that & connected it to my sand filter. The old intakes now circulate my pool water 1000% better than the old system that was horrible! I watched your video and followed your directions. Lowes had an adaptor that worked for me though, (for slip on hoses). Everything worked great. Thank you!
i installed 2 skimmers one of these for skimming / circulation, another wide mouth jacuzzi style skimmer up near the top of the pool above the waterline for Rain overflow Drainage, this eliminated the very costly need to build a French drain around the pool. if we get a heavy extended rain it drains out into a 1" pipe off into a storm drain creek. I also installed a shower drain into the bottom of the pool and created a sump area in the middle, this is also connected to the drain line with a 1" directional flow control valve.
Nice, I got same filter and saltwater chlorinator but an oval 16x10. My neighbors have 3 trees that have white flowers and they go straight into my pool, hope this skimmer helps keep it clean.
I did this modification this weekend. Man, every time I poked a hole through the liner for the screws I was nervous, but I finished up without a hitch and the water is flowing and filtering much better. My wife and I are going to go through the vacuum process tonight. The only thing I bought extra was a valve to put at the stock pump and a hose to go from that valve to the skimmer.
Thanks for the information, I'm going to put one on my pool, I've been thinking about a way to make my pool water to flow in a circle also, Thanks Again.
Highly recommend adding one of these to your pool. I won't have a pool without one. And yes it's nerve-wracking putting holes in your pool. Especially cutting the center hole out of the skimmer.
Man, I walked around this project a few times, going over the steps but I was still just nervous as hell. One goof and it might be hard to come back from!
Awesome...Thank you for sharing...just put the Intex skimmer on as I didn't understand others video on the Hayward and was nervous about cutting the pool...might have to reconsider.
thank you and can you please give us a list of parts you used for this awesome project. in particular the part numbers for that cap off of the old two tiny inlets and the part number for the ball valve. Thank you
Nice job you can change the jet to a smaller one you just unscrew the white ring around the front we’re you adjust it they make a smaller one that has a smaller hole so that it can move your water around even faster
no surprise with the increased flow. Pumps are good at pushing water but not sucking. So keep the feed to the pump as big as possible, skimmer, larger hose etc will all make it better
Great video somewhat informative. My only issues is that you don’t give part numbers or sizes of the modifications you performed. That would help us a lot
The skimmer has standard 2" pipe threads, found in any US hardware store, the PVC ball valve is also a standard plumbing part, the 2" to 1.25" adapter part can be found on Ebay or Amazon, usually under Intex to 2" adapter or similar verbiage
Hi Thank you for a great video. Many professionals advise against doing this, so I am inquisitive about the durability. Can you give an update on how it is holding up after sitting there for two years? Can the liner withstand heavy activity and many waves?
Haven't put it back up yet this year due to spring being cold and rainy, still. I see no reason to believe the pool will have any issues with the skimmer going back on it this year (if we ever get summer weather). If anything, I expect one of the windows to fail as they're crazed and yellowed from sun exposure. My kids are rough on the pool, jumping off the deck, and getting it going around so fast you can't swim against it.
I got a Hayward sand filter with cilca sand works great...I run my pump constantly for whole season just shock it once a week an throw a 3 inch tablet in skimmer...always clear even with the trees around
I find I lost about 2 inches at the most. One commenter said they set the top of the skimmer gasket into the double section where the top fold is attached. My kids love to get the water going in a whirlpool, and that splashes out enough water that I'm not too worried about mounting the skimmer higher.
I had the small mouth and my chlorine float thing always got stuck or sucked into it so I went with the wide mouth to stop it from happening or at least stop it from clogging it up.
Where did you get the salt chlorinator and how does it work? I have the exact same pool and I am curious now since you kept the original pump that came with the pool. I might mimic your setup if you don't mind.
Does this take care of all the little annoying black spec bugs that can’t seem to stay out of my pool? I just bought a wide mouth (was the only one available and was cheaper on offer up) it should be delivered tomorrow. I cannot wait to see how this improves my mental health
Does the 1.5 ball vavle screw directly to the bottom of the skimmer or is there some adapter or gasket or plumbing tape? Also how did you connect under the ball vavle to the pool hose, any adapter, gasket or tape?
Great video attaching the skimmer to the pool but I can't find the size adapter we need to hook the skimmer to the hose. I know you ordered it separately from Amazon can you please tell me the what they've called, sizes and and # that will help me find it. Gonna try this but wanna have my ducks in a row!! Thanks

@@shelleywhaley I was trying to get the water to shoot out to one side. The little holes didn't really do that. I drilled through the grey part with the hole saw, then installed the white part.
It looks to me like that black gasket was supposed to go on the threaded side where you used the pipe tape. It would be sandwiched between the housing and fitting and the tape wouldn't have been necessary.
The inside diameter of the hole in the gasket wouldn't fit over the 1.5" threaded end of the adapter. Teflon tape is the correct way to seal pipe threads. Thank you for watching.
Ok so I saw the comment concerning the reason you cut your own hole instead of using the existing skimmer hole. Since your pool didn’t already have a skimmer hole, has anyone added this to a pool that already had a skimmer hole? Does the opening for the skimmer fully envelope the existing hole?
Ok so I bought the skimmer at my local pool supply store. I wanna do that ball valve modification too. Do I still need the adapter that you mentioned at the beginning of the video if I’m going to plumb in the ball valve instead of utilizing the Intex pipes? I’ve also bought the upgraded spa flex pipe that you featured in one of your other videos. I also plan to replace the stock corrugated hose that connects my Hayward pump to sand filter housing as well.
How on earth did you attach the eyeball thingy to the existing outlet?? did you hole saw it & then glue that in place?? I been trying to figure this out for awhile, I have the same. set up as you?? Thanks for any help
So are the 2 B hoses just there and no longer serving any purpose? If so, could you just glue the black plugs in them so you don’t have to worry about the hoses?
Can I please ask you, did your skimmer box have the clear plastic cup that goes in the bottom of the outside part before the basket goes in? My best ways one does but when it is in there is no suction, it’s like the cup is stopping the water from being sucked in. Do you know if it is needed?
It's common PVC plumbing, take your skimmer housing to the hardware store and find the PVC pipe parts that will add this. The skimmer is also made of PVC. I made another video explaining this
Thank you also is that a double pump your running on the left side ? I’m setting up my best way 20 x 48 pool this weekend already it comes with the pump on the right
1 year later, how is the skimmer and the pool seal holding? I would like to do this too for my intex pool. Just before I cut checking if the pool vinyl tears over time? or the seal around the hayward gasket start to seep? Thank you for posting
Love all your videos !! I put this on my pool last year loved it!! Now have a bigger pool but it is so hard to get this skimmer on this time- cannot get these flat screws to poke through the liner any ideas - and what size is the ball valve ? Thank you oh I saw your answer to the valve in another comment - also of the birds in the background I’m originally from New Bedford 😀
What did you do with the other 2 intakes though? Could them 2 intakes and the skimmer hose somehow connect before running to the pump so that all 3 intakes are being used now? I like the idea of using the original intakes still to help suck up particles floating beneath the water.
One season with no issues, starting the second season next week. Thanks to the inner and outer way it clamps onto the pool, I can't see any really issues from stress developing
I ordered and just received a kit that has all of the same pieces, just slightly different output (threads are on the inside of the output) from here for a Whole lot cheaper: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004VQDXXK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
how did you install the eyeball? We just got a hayward and the inlet eyeball assembly is humongous. If we use it, we'd have to cut a larger hole. so, how did you add that eyeball?
The return port cover unscrews, I used a hole saw to remove the middle, and installed the eyeball in the hole. If you have smaller ports in the pool, they give you gaskets in the assembly to cut a larger hole in the pool and seal it. You could also run PVC pipe through the smaller port and put the eyeball on the PVC, it won't flow as much water then though.
@@rowerwet I have the same pool and have everything installed except the eyeball. I came back here to see how it was installed as I figured the whole return assembly would need to be removed and the new Haywood one installed. I would like to use your method, but I am wondering what holds the eyeball in place? There is nothing for it to screw on to, so how does it stay in? Am I missing something?
Too many comments to read through but is there a reason I couldn't put the skimmer where my intake hose is vs cutting another hole? (aside from cutting it to fit the skimmer)
If your intake hose is like mine, it's about half way up the side of the pool. The skimmer needs to be as high as possible to skim the surface of the water. I set my skimmer roughly equal distance between the two outlet nipples
@@rowerwet Is it possible to swap the in and out holes, of course reversing the tubing to filter and pump. Just trying to eliminate having to add another connection by cutting a hole for the skimmer. Thanks!
@@ResourcefulMama as long as the top of the skimmer is above the normal water level. The lid of the skimmer is not watertight, it has a big hole in the middle, and no seal on the lid
a good way to do it is to get some pvc that will fit in those holes. insert it and cap both ends using the pvc glue on outside of the pvc pipe too to seal those holes for good. You'll never need them again anyways
Very nice and informative vid. Good views. Can you tell me if this skimmer dropped your max water level? Can us the water level set by the max hight of the skimmer box?
I lost maybe an inch or two, if I was to do it again, I would mount the skimmer so the top screws would be through the doubled section at the top, to lose less depth. It really doesn't matter though since my kids favorite thing is to get a whirlpool going in the pool by running in circles. This slops out enough water that I'm never overflowing the skimmer unless it rains a lot

Can you supply the links for the parts. Thank you
Awesome. Thanks for taking the time to share your success!!
Hi
Thank you for a great video.
I the Hayward skimmer is a definite improvement, get the Intex sand filter and pump you will love that even better!!!
I got a Hayward sand filter with cilca sand works great...I run my pump constantly for whole season just shock it once a week an throw a 3 inch tablet in skimmer...always clear even with the trees around
Hi, thanks for the video. Do you mind sharing the size of the ball valve? Thank you!
1.5" PVC
@@rowerwet Thank you! :)
At 3:50 that grey threaded adapter/reducers.....I need some of these...what is the thread size of each side?
Thank you - I added one just the way you laid it out.
Do u have a video for setting up the inlet eyeball that comes with it
What adapters did you buy for the bottom of the skimmer?
I’d like to know too. Nothing about size was mentioned. Just intex adapters?
Great video tutorial!
Great video. Easy to follow... may install one.. i just hate skimmer set up.. how you lose 5.. maybe 6 inches of water depth.. any ideas
I find I lost about 2 inches at the most. One commenter said they set the top of the skimmer gasket into the double section where the top fold is attached.
My kids love to get the water going in a whirlpool, and that splashes out enough water that I'm not too worried about mounting the skimmer higher.
same setup here works great
I had the small mouth and my chlorine float thing always got stuck or sucked into it so I went with the wide mouth to stop it from happening or at least stop it from clogging it up.
Just wondered why you use the outake valves instead of the intake for the vacuum?
Does the 1.5 ball vavle screw directly to the bottom of the skimmer or is there some adapter or gasket or plumbing tape? Also how did you connect under the ball vavle to the pool hose, any adapter, gasket or tape?
I have another video explaining how. It's a 1 1/2" to 40 mm adapter, the grey part, and teflon plumbing tape
Do you have the part number for the adapter? I have the Bestway 9x18x48.
I'm having the hardest time finding the grey adapter that you found off of Amazon . Can you help please
Amazon is one source GAME 4560 40mm to 1 1/2 Inch Conversion Kit (For Intex & Bestway Pools)

Thanks

19:38 threw me off the part that you said your did the drill hole was that a part you messed up and you had an extra one ? I'm just confused cause you have it in your hand and saying that's what you used and did so that's what confused me did you have 2 and messed up the one ?
Those little holes are the ones I'm referring to, the big hole obviously works great
@@rowerwet why did you drill the holes? Also does it just fit right in?
@@shelleywhaley I was trying to get the water to shoot out to one side. The little holes didn't really do that. I drilled through the grey part with the hole saw, then installed the white part.
Does your pump aerate a bit while the vacuum adapter is on? I'm having that issue with mine so I stopped using it till I figure out the issue.
After two years, any leaks from splitting the butterfly gasket?
Yeah were did u get the ball valve at like can you post a list to all the parts you used please
I explained it in a newer video
What size ball valve did u put on
thank you, great job. helped me out alot
My ? Is, how is it holding up this swimming season. Do you have any leaks or rips. I love the idea just scared of it not working and ruining my pool.
Haven't set up the pool for this year yet. It's still not pool season up here
How on earth did you attach the eyeball thingy to the existing outlet?? did you hole saw it & then glue that in place?? I been trying to figure this out for awhile, I have the same. set up as you?? Thanks for any help
What did you end up doing?
So are the 2 B hoses just there and no longer serving any purpose? If so, could you just glue the black plugs in them so you don’t have to worry about the hoses?
Yes, just capped off. I have plans to add a solar pool heater using these ports at some point
Can I please ask you, did your skimmer box have the clear plastic cup that goes in the bottom of the outside part before the basket goes in? My best ways one does but when it is in there is no suction, it’s like the cup is stopping the water from being sucked in. Do you know if it is needed?
Mine does not, it definitely seems like that would block the flow
If you need to winterize do you need to lower the level below the skimmer?
I drain and store the pool for the winter. Around here it would probably freeze solid during part of the winter
I need to do this I’m so tried of getting leaves out of pool with leaf net or vacuuming all the time!!!
It does an amazing job of sucking up the floating debris
Do you have the link at all for turn off switch that sits just under the skimmer? Thanks
It's common PVC plumbing, take your skimmer housing to the hardware store and find the PVC pipe parts that will add this. The skimmer is also made of PVC.
I made another video explaining this
Hi! Can I ask about the filters? We have the stock one you have, but not the other. Do you have to have 2 filters to do this? Thanks!
It's a salt water chlorinator
Thank You, I want to install this
What can I use to stop up the old holes from the filter when I add my skimmer
I found rubber plugs that worked, try whiskey nip bottles or similar plastic items.
Thank you also is that a double pump your running on the left side ? I’m setting up my best way 20 x 48 pool this weekend already it comes with the pump on the right
@@heatherrivera3831 the other thing is a chlorine generator, we run a salt water pool
What is the second filter on the ground and why do you have it? You can see it at 16:00.
A salt cell chlorine generator made by intex
Get a sand filter. After backwash, add about half a pound od DE ,, diatomaceous earth.. For filtering performance
Where is the dirty water goin to when your vacuuming the pool?
Through the filter unless it's really bad, then it is dumped out of the pool
@@rowerwet Thanks. Do you have a video on it?
@@rmhtxrxl not yet, I upgraded to a sand filter this season so discharge and backwash are just two positions on the flow selector.
My hose are 1-1/4.
What connections do I need?
1 year later, how is the skimmer and the pool seal holding? I would like to do this too for my intex pool. Just before I cut checking if the pool vinyl tears over time? or the seal around the hayward gasket start to seep? Thank you for posting
Mine never leaked once I got the screws tightened down enough. The vinyl is fiberglass reinforced, tearing is very unlikely
I poked the holes through with a pick first I believe
What did you do with the other 2 intakes though? Could them 2 intakes and the skimmer hose somehow connect before running to the pump so that all 3 intakes are being used now? I like the idea of using the original intakes still to help suck up particles floating beneath the water.
Could use them, but it would diminish the flow into the skimmer, which captures the most litter
What about not having the reinforcing patch of PVC liner where you're putting the skimmer? Does it wear out the side of the pool?
One season with no issues, starting the second season next week. Thanks to the inner and outer way it clamps onto the pool, I can't see any really issues from stress developing
Why are the two lines still hooked up after you installed the skimmer? They appear to be worthless at this point. Do they have a purpose?
My guess is he just needs to plug the holes. Currently having them hooked up he is keeping the water in the pool lol.
I did the same thing today. Thank you for the info my friend
Can you add a link for the skimmer
Can you provide the link for the parts we need that you got from Amazon? Thank you! I am definitely doing this!

What size is the valve?
Rowerwet, DO you drain your pool and winterize ? DO you have any recomendations or links to follow ?
I drain it and put it away for the winter
What do I need to hook up the ball shut off vavle? Do you have a video on that?
how did you install the eyeball?
@@rowerwet Good point! Thanks.
The lid of the skimmer is not watertight, it has a big hole in the middle, and no seal on the lid
is skimmer enough for water circulation?
More than enough, and I have an oversized pump.
Quick ? Did you use your other intake or did you close it off.
Closed off
a good way to do it is to get some pvc that will fit in those holes. insert it and cap both ends using the pvc glue on outside of the pvc pipe too to seal those holes for good. You'll never need them again anyways
Hey did cutting into the pool have any negatives? Was there any ripping?
None, no ripping, I have a video from this spring that shows the pool with the hole cut in it. Before I installed the skimmer for this year
@@rowerwet I did it and it has been working like a charm. The new CIPU 12" filter has made a big difference as well. Thanks again.
Looks like u got 2 pumps or ones converter ? So whats the link to that direction im surprised they dont come with that
What did you do with the 2 original ports did you just blank them off and now only using the skimmer. ?
Yes, I plan on using a small pump and a solar heater with them, but haven't built it yet
@@rowerwet Definitely let us know when you get around to doing this because I would also be interested in something similar. Live in AZ so can definitely extend the pool time for many months. Also curious if you got info on what you are planning (what kind of pump or solar heater). Great videos by the way!
