I have to admit- I really felt some of the shit thst mei went through really deeply- like I remember I was HORRIFIED To have my mom look through my notebook and see the shit I drew- because goddamnit I don’t want anyone to see that shit!!! Jesus-
Also- I took mandarin in high school as a language, and I completely forgot that 4 is an unlucky number in Chinese, because the Chinese word for 4 also sounds like the Chinese word for death. I’m not Chinese personally, but it was cool to understand a lot of the references they made to Chinese culture because I took mandarin in middle and high school. It’s really cool!

I honestly preferred Turning Reds Mother/Grandmother and daughter apology to Encantos. Just the apology alone. I like how Ming actually listened to Mei but still tried to bring her back because she's still traumatized but finally decides to go against her own beliefs and push past her own boundaries to accept it for her daughters sake.
I dunno, I just feel like if Abuela started the "all of you" song then I would have been okay with it but no, Mirabel puts in most of the work and all Abuela had to say was "Sorry" without having to actually fix anything herself where in Turning Red Ming forces herself to let her daughter go after she sees how much she's been hurting her and gains the strength to hold her own fears back and grow as a person so that she can become a better other to Mei. Now she's lonely but she's a good mum now and that's what matters.
The only other thing that Turning Red does better is making the characters actually act their age. Seriously, I thought that Isabela and Dolores were the same age as Mirabel. It's only Antonio, Camilo and Abuela that anyone could guess the age of correctly personality wise. I'm the same age as Mirabel and throughout half the movie I just couldn't stand how unbelievably mature she could be at times. She was never once childish (only while with Bruno or in his room but even that didn't hit the right spots) and with turning red, like you said, she actually acts like a teenage girl who lives in a city. Its expected that Mirabel in her setting is mature for her age but c'mon, she needs to at least struggle to STAY mature.
Like maybe she could break character and Abuela walks in on it, or her childish nature messes something up for Isabela which could build up on the reason why the two don't get along in Isabela's point of view since that was never explored properly. That could make for some funny or just relatable scenes. That's all from me, peace.

It was a pretty good movie, although I probably wouldn't watch it again, as all the fun of the movie came from not knowing what was going to happen.
There weren't any scenes that got me emotional, there were some action scenes, but they didn't feel entertaining, and there were a few moments that got me to laugh, and some which I think were supposed to make me laugh.
I think some scenes perhaps would've been more effective at conveying an emotion to me had I been able to relate to the situations. But as a person with a boring life, I can't relate to most character emotions, and only really feel emotional about a scene if I have seen all the development leading up to it.
I recommend the movie, had a good time watching it for the story's sake, but once you've seen it, the movie becomes pretty void of entertainment.

I loved Turning Red, seen it multible times already I wanna watch it in cantonese and even Japanese or even South Korean just the variety see if some jokes changed through all the adaptations.
I have this higher then Encounto but that is becuse I prefer this story and I can relate more even if I think the sister bonding in Encanto is great and I wish more of the movie was of that.
And I think the climax comes of as not serious becuse Mei have no idea how to fight her mom, she dose´t really want to so she just comes up with distractions but yes it is funny but chaotic and I don´t love the jokes but the ending was beautiful I just love the message and struggle they went through.

There's a little seriousness just before Panda Mei knocks out her Mom.....all the bottled up pent up emotions spewing out. The part in the bamboo forest before the epilogue is simply wonderful and beautiful. This is one of the most disarming and beautiful films I've ever seen actually. In my opinion, one of Pixar's best.

Just not my kind of film and I say it cause films like this where it’s about family issues and drama as the main concern/villain just isn’t my kind of movie, along with encanto. I just don’t like these films cause I don’t like watching movies about that stuff because I like to use movies to escape from the worlds issues not be reminded of them.

To be honest, the movie seemed to be targeted towards immigrants and first gen children. Which works for me since I am a first generation Canadian and I felt a connection to many of the issues mentioned. However this does mean other people, like non-immigrants, will have a difficult time connecting with it. Hence the harsh criticism. Plus politics or political views wasn’t even mentioned, it just a matter of perspective.

@@owenrogers7484 I feel like associating Mei comments of “my panda, my choice” with the pro-choice’s slogan “my body, my choice” is a bit of a stretch. It may be a matter of context but the way I see it, it was her saying that she should decide what she wants to do with her curse, and by extension, be trusted with making her own decision. Many families, especially in the immigrant communities, have this problem where children are seen as too dumb or too immature to make their own decisions. And that their parent always knows what best. Again it all a matter of perspective. Also not too be rude but I was kind of expecting a more harsher response to be honest.
