But Mystic Falls is very anti-vamp and so when they find out that Katherine is a vampire they capture her and plan to lock her in a tomb with other vampires they caught. Stefan and Damon try to save her but get killed in the process and turned into vampires and believe Katherine was locked in the tomb. She wasn’t. 145(?) years later in 2009, Stefan meets Elena who is the newest and very human doppelgänger. There’s a whole bunch of drama after that but skipping a while forward there’s this cure for vampirism that Elena ends up shoving down Katherine’s throat forcing her to become human again(which she hates). She then gets the cure drained out of her which makes her begin to age rapidly to become her true age which is 500 something so she’s dying. She also meets her daughter(Nadia) during this time who is now a vampire that has been trying to find Katherine, because Katherine is her mother. And then right before Katherine dies of old age she uses magic to put herself in Elena’s body(who is now a vampire) and pretends to be Elena. Everyone eventually finds out and they kill her, freeing Elena. Katherine ends up getting dragged to hell. She actually comes back in the last season but the video was made before that. ok a lil history lesson about doppelgangers if you're interested: long story short back like a 1000 years ago when the originals were turned into vampires by their mother (who was a witch) to protect them, they all discovered that klaus also carried the werewolf gene. the werewolf curse is genetic so it was revealed that klaus' mother had had an affair with another man who carried the wolf gene, and that klaus did not share the same father as his sibings. after finding out he also carried the wolf gene, and being both wolf and vampire (modernly known as a hybrid) was obviouly considered an abomination and he would be too strong and it would upset the balance of nature yadayada, so his mother placed a curse on him to hide his wolf side. strong spells require blood sacrifice so while klaus' mother placed the curse on him he used a girl named tatia as the sacrifice. she was the first version of katherine/elena. but because there's a loophole to every spell and no spell can be unbreakable nature finds a balance, aka a way to break the curse. in this case it was doppelgangers. the first doppelganger aka a descendant of tatia who looked exactly like her appeared again in the 1500s. this was katherine. klaus found her and tried to break his curse, but as you saw katherine figured out she was gonna be sacrificed and then turned into a vampire and ran. and yes in 1864 she settled in mystic falls, met stefan and damon, got both of them to fall in love with her, then turned them into vampires and faked her own death and ran to keep running from klaus. skipping to modern day or well to 2009 when the vampire diaries began, stefan comes back to mystic falls to see his home and meets elena and sees that she looks exactly like katherine, but he quickly finds out she's not but just a normal human teenage girl. they fall in love etc, then damon comes back to town and the love triangle between the three of them slowly developes over the seasons. but the main point being they also find out katherine is alive and why she faked her death back in the day (aka what I just explained). they found out she was the original doppelganger, but because she ran and the curse couldn't be broken the doppelganger had to reappear again, and that's elena, who again looks exactly like katherine and tatia(all played by the same actress). that is actually how klaus' character is introduced in season 2 of the vampire diaries. he learns of elenas existense and that the doppelganger has reappeared and he can break his curse and become a hybrid, which you know he does but elena managed to survive due to more complicated plotlines I won't attempt to explain. and then on we get introduced to the original family in season 3 and learn their origin story and because the characters were so loved by the fans they got their own spinnof show that premiered in 2013 and the same time as season 5 of the vampire diaries. yes I grew up with both of the shows, have seen all of the seasons way too many times and remember everything a little too well.
This can be super confusing if you don know whats going on. Katherine is an ancestor of Elena's somehow, making her a part of the Petrova bloodline, which was cursed to produce multiple women with the same appearance and blood with magical properties over the span of hundreds of years. Katherine wasn't even the first one, there were more. Katherine became a vampire, so she and Elena were the first doppelgängers to live at the same time. Before they fought over Elena, the Salvatore brothers both fell in love with Katherine first. They drank her blood and died so they became vampires. They thought she was dead but long story short, she wasn't. You should've seen Elena's face when she found a picture of Katherine in her boyfriend's bedroom in season 1. Girl was shook. Katherine was a total bitch who would do anything to survive. She would backstab anyone too no matter what. Later on she found out that a daughter she had had when she was human became a vampire and had been looking for her. Her daughter died. Elena forced Katherine to take the one and only vampirism cure, but she was so old that that started slowly killing her. Then they finally killed her and she went to hell. Later one she would come back in a kinda boss fight thing as the queen of hell.
Elena, one of the main characters, and katherine pierce are doppelgangers. Katherine killed herself so she necame human, so klaus' curse couldn't be broken anymore. After about 600 years another doppelganger showed up , elena, so now klaus is after her. So basically when Klaus was turned into a vampire his first kill triggered his werewolf side, his mother(who was a witch) locked away his werewolf side with a spell using human doppelgänger blood.The spell to release Klaus’ werewolf side needs a human doppelgänger. Kathrine was born 500ish years later as the next doppelgänger in like the late 1400s I think. Katherine was a noble girl in Bulgaria and she had a child out of wedlock so her father took the child(Nadia) away right after she was born without even letting Katherine hold her. After that Katherine ran away and ended coming upon Klaus and Elijah(in England I think) unaware she was a doppelgänger. Well she and Elijah fell in love but it wasn’t meant to be cause Klaus was going to sacrifice her to unlock his werewolf side, but then this other vampire who worked for Klaus and Elijah also fell in love with her so he told her the truth that Klaus and Elijah were going to sacrifice her. So she obviously ran away, then she was given vampire blood to heal her injuries but before the vampire blood could leave her system she killed herself then drank human blood becoming a vampire so Klaus couldn’t use her. Klaus was furious so he killed her entire family and hunted her for 500 years. In 1864 she seduces Stefan and Damon in their hometown of Mystic Falls, Virginia. But Mystic Falls is very anti-vamp and so when they find out that Katherine is a vampire they capture her and plan to lock her in a tomb with other vampires they caught. Stefan and Damon try to save her but get killed in the process and turned into vampires and believe Katherine was locked in the tomb. She wasn’t. 145(?) years later in 2009, Stefan meets Elena who is the newest and very human doppelgänger. There’s a whole bunch of drama after that but skipping a while forward there’s this cure for vampirism that Elena ends up shoving down Katherine’s throat forcing her to become human again(which she hates). She then gets the cure drained out of her which makes her begin to age rapidly to become her true age which is 500 something so she’s dying. She also meets her daughter(Nadia) during this time who is now a vampire that has been trying to find Katherine, because Katherine is her mother. And then right before Katherine dies of old age she uses magic to put herself in Elena’s body(who is now a vampire) and pretends to be Elena. Everyone eventually finds out and they kill her, freeing Elena. Katherine ends up getting dragged to hell. She actually comes back in the last season but the video was made before that.

ok a lil history lesson about doppelgangers if you're interested: long story short back like a 1000 years ago when the originals were turned into vampires by their mother (who was a witch) to protect them, they all discovered that klaus also carried the werewolf gene. the werewolf curse is genetic so it was revealed that klaus' mother had had an affair with another man who carried the wolf gene, and that klaus did not share the same father as his sibings. after finding out he also carried the wolf gene, and being both wolf and vampire (modernly known as a hybrid) was obviouly considered an abomination and he would be too strong and it would upset the balance of nature yadayada, so his mother placed a curse on him to hide his wolf side. strong spells require blood sacrifice so while klaus' mother placed the curse on him he used a girl named tatia as the sacrifice. she was the first version of katherine/elena. but because there's a loophole to every spell and no spell can be unbreakable nature finds a balance, aka a way to break the curse. in this case it was doppelgangers. the first doppelganger aka a descendant of tatia who looked exactly like her appeared again in the 1500s. this was katherine. klaus found her and tried to break his curse, but as you saw katherine figured out she was gonna be sacrificed and then turned into a vampire and ran. and yes in 1864 she settled in mystic falls, met stefan and damon, got both of them to fall in love with her, then turned them into vampires and faked her own death and ran to keep running from klaus. skipping to modern day or well to 2009 when the vampire diaries began, stefan comes back to mystic falls to see his home and meets elena and sees that she looks exactly like katherine, but he quickly finds out she's not but just a normal human teenage girl. they fall in love etc, then damon comes back to town and the love triangle between the three of them slowly developes over the seasons. but the main point being they also find out katherine is alive and why she faked her death back in the day (aka what I just explained). they found out she was the original doppelganger, but because she ran and the curse couldn't be broken the doppelganger had to reappear again, and that's elena, who again looks exactly like katherine and tatia(all played by the same actress). that is actually how klaus' character is introduced in season 2 of the vampire diaries. he learns of elenas existense and that the doppelganger has reappeared and he can break his curse and become a hybrid, which you know he does but elena managed to survive due to more complicated plotlines I won't attempt to explain. and then on we get introduced to the original family in season 3 and learn their origin story and because the characters were so loved by the fans they got their own spinnof show that premiered in 2013 and the same time as season 5 of the vampire diaries. yes I grew up with both of the shows, have seen all of the seasons way too many times and remember everything a little too well.

This can be super confusing if you don know whats going on. Katherine is an ancestor of Elena's somehow, making her a part of the Petrova bloodline, which was cursed to produce multiple women with the same appearance and blood with magical properties over the span of hundreds of years. Katherine wasn't even the first one, there were more. Katherine became a vampire, so she and Elena were the first doppelgängers to live at the same time. Before they fought over Elena, the Salvatore brothers both fell in love with Katherine first. They drank her blood and died so they became vampires. They thought she was dead but long story short, she wasn't. You should've seen Elena's face when she found a picture of Katherine in her boyfriend's bedroom in season 1. Girl was shook. Katherine was a total bitch who would do anything to survive. She would backstab anyone too no matter what. Later on she found out that a daughter she had had when she was human became a vampire and had been looking for her. Her daughter died. Elena forced Katherine to take the one and only vampirism cure, but she was so old that that started slowly killing her. Then they finally killed her and she went to hell. Later one she would come back in a kinda boss fight thing as the queen of hell.

Elena, one of the main characters, and katherine pierce are doppelgangers. Katherine killed herself so she necame human, so klaus' curse couldn't be broken anymore. After about 600 years another doppelganger showed up , elena, so now klaus is after her.
And she started aging cause she took he cure to vampirism so her age started catching up to her which made her about 600 years old.
