Would have enjoyed it more if the sound hadn't gone BAD 19 seconds in!
Wow, how neat! Thanks for sharing these inspirational pieces.
I saw her retrospective at the Hammer. The evolution from the washer and dryer pieces she found in NY streets to her later work of the fishes and sketches. AMAZING!! It was like a rock show. So many people there...
..reminds me of the movie '9' - pretty cool & interesting way of seeing things..
I'd describe the black velvet Roberts mentions as "light absorbent" rather than just "matte", since matte surfaces can still reflect some light back. We've used black velvet in place of matte black for many years for motion picture effects work. I long assumed that Bontecou likely was using black velvet in those dark openings in her works, since the darkness always seemed so profoundly deep. There's another never---though extremely expensive to produce---black material that reflects no light at all, and has been described as "like holding a hole in your hands". I can't recall the name of this carbon-based (I think) material, though I have a vague memory that it may have been something inspired in some way by Bucky-balls. If anyone knows what I'm talking about---what this material is actually called---I'd love to know. (Seems it was made known in-around 2012-ish, maybe a little more recently.) Thanks for the video. Can't get enough of her work. What a powerful talent!
Please fix the audio on this video. There are so few about Bontecou. And please make more on women artist such a Bontecou!
Thanks MoMa for putting this up I remember reading about Bontcou but forgot her name.
If only one could hear what was said about this fascinating artist...
What happened to the audio?
Cool 😎
her work stops me dead in my tracks. no blah blah, just visceral smack in the gut.
hey moma curators, you should know by now not to call the work "primitive"
