Hey Nic, I totally agree with you about not telling students about the drills. They do the same thing in my district. The students couldn't care less when the alarms sound; they see it as a way to get out of class.
Really think no one should know about the drills. They won't know if there is going to be a fire in advance. Also the drill should have kept going because if that was a real fire they cant tell the fire to stop.
Honestly I like it when they tell us there will be a drill so it doesn’t scare me a ton but at the same time I do think it is a bit stupid because you can’t tell when there will be a fire
@thepokemonguy996 yeah the alarm always scared me for the first bit because I'm not expecting it (especially right after school started at 7 :30 and the class happened to be completely quiet for once). In my school the teachers were never told the exact times/days, but had a list of possible times that it could happen. There were actually two times my senior year where the alarm went off for smoke near the electrical room (which happened at the worst time, 10 minutes before the end of the school day.) and another time because someone burnt some food.

Honestly now the alarms don’t scare me as much anymore when we don’t know when they are gonna go off. I also might be better with the alarms because when I was in 3rd grade we had advances in the classroom so with the loud as sh!t alarms and my probably not fully developed ears, would scare me to death. Now going into my freshman year in high school and having alarms that aren’t as loud (NSs on low volume I think) it’s gotten better
I agree with you. I don't like announced drills. I do have autisme. But I coped with horn strobes quicker than bells. But some alarms were tripped by detectors. I've evacuated every at alarm since my first fire drill. Except when they announce to disregard.

The only problem with the ones that have autism or other conditions that would be triggered by the fire alarms going off. If they have a meltdown in public it would just cause more chaos and confusion so I don't think you can win either way announced or not
I absolutely agree with you that the students should not be informed of planned fire drills. In fact, I'd go as far as saying the teachers shouldn't be informed either. However, I can definitely relate when it comes to sensitivity to sudden noises and alarms. But at the same time, real fires sadly happen and they don't give you any warning. In the highly unfortunate event of a real emergency, we can't have students refusing to evacuate the building. The point of fire drills is to practice a real life scenario so that we can determine what was done right and what went wrong. That way, the evacuation process can be perfected so that everyone is prepared for a real emergency situation. Telling everyone ahead of time is pointless. Not only are crucial lessons not learned, but many of the students likely won't take it seriously. While some people do struggle with noise sensitivity and alarm fears, pre-evacuating them and doing announced drills is the wrong approach. Instead, we need to help them overcome their fears and work through the challenges. That's the best way to ensure a quick and safe evacuation of the building.
I agree 100% with you on the pre evacuating thing it doesn't teach you anything the kids need to learn what to do when the fire alarm sounds end of the story fires are just like natural disasters like earthquakes they can and will happen at any moment notice you can't pre evac for a earthquake you can't pre evac for a fire nether just learn what to do when it happens I would speak with the fire department about coming in doing a training course for staff and students pre evacuating does no good going into the real world fire alarms might be loud and scary but they will save your life one way or another.

Their safety comes first, I can calm the anxiety attack outside. But also that's why I encourage the use of noise cancelling headphones for those children. Serves a double purpose as it reduces overstimulation in normal day functions in addition to making loud noise less startling. TLDR, leaving a student behind in a fire drill is careless. Point blank. I said what I said.
For me it depends if it’s not ear piercing loud i’m ok with doing suprise drills while you got a valid point but at the same time doing surprise or unplanned fire drills can also risk getting into trouble by the fire department and them responding for only a drill not an actual emergency like how my high school handled it once

I can kind of relate to that guy. I used to be super sensitive to noise when I was younger, and fire drills were like walking through hell because of it. But over the years my sensitivity to it went down, and now I’m perfectly fine with it. I still jump ten feet in the air when they first go off, but then I spring right into action and make my way out of the building, ‘cause that’s what you’re supposed to do.
So you have never dealt with autistic children who are sensitive with noise and can have a meltdown with the slightest sound. To say what you said is very insensitive and I hope you don't have to deal with such children during your life time. As a parent with an autistic kid we make sure that his teachers warn us of such event like this we can prepare him and get his noise canceller on him. Unfortnately sometimes they don't warn us and this is the end results.
It's very insensitive to not prepare a child for an emergency where having a meltdown can endanger themselves and others. Those that have been trained and been in emergency situations understand that. That includes some of the school principals who realize that it may be difficult for some students but that's life and you've got to deal with it.
If I may ask, how would your son's teachers warn you to put his noise canceler on him in the event of an actual emergency? Fire drills are not conducted in schools to torture children who are sensitive to loud noises. They are performed so the building's occupants know how to respond during an actual fire.

Also when an autistic child has an encounter with a surprise sounds he or she will react in a negatives ways. Now any parent that has an autistic child verbal or non verbal knows that any kind of sounds can cause a reactions that can be dramatic. Now I understand that this might be difficult for those who hasn't had any types of dealing with autism and for them it might seems strange but trust me when you have to deal with a child who suffer with noise sensitivity it can be very difficult. So when someone says too bad deal with it or pass judgments by saying kids who have meltdown our too fill in the blank then it shows two things one theirs maturity and empathy and second their experience with such persons. Also noise canclers are always with the child no matter what to protect them and fire drills exercise are warned ahead of time and if G0D forbid a real fire happens then his cancelers are with him at all times...

I mean... in this day and age for some ppl feelings/emotions/psychological well-being is more important than facts and logic. For them, who cares if it doesn't make sense? If it made them feel safe (also social safetism is a thing btw) or good or positive, then that's all that matters. Nevermind if it's illogical. Not saying psycho-wellbeing is unimportant, just saying that for some ppl, they go head over heels bent up on worrying so much ab feelings and emotions to the point that it seems that logic doesn't even exist, and I particularly think that's humanely dangerous.

Mine are even worse, they are the quietest things in my house. So I was walking around my house minding my own business and heard my smoke detector making weird noises, so I went downstairs, and it was smoking down there because a family member of mine was cooking. So I told her that you're setting off the smoke detector, and she was like I couldn't hear it. My life is at risk because of and if there is a fire. My smoke detectors are too quiet to alert me. I hope you guys reading this not have this problem like I do.
Umm Nic, you need to be a bit more careful about what you're sharing in these videos. In previous ones I've been able to work out which school it was from some things you could see on the walls (specific big words). And now I've been able to work out where you live and that's probably a bad idea to make that publicly available. Think about cutting a bit out here.

Usually students with special needs are privately informed in advance of the drill if necessary, but they don't announce it to everyone.

in my area any ac o or vent units must shut down when the alarm goes off and each vent duct run has a damper that closes as well very fussy here
