    This shows the 2008 removal of the 1841 stone arches, which were in perfect working order. They were kept intact and placed atop steel arches made to order for each one. They were place back in position by 2016, and the steel arches shown here were removed. They are the first of their kind in the world.

    Those arches came out sweet as a nut. Just shows what a little bit of prior planning can do. Simple but very effective. Well done!

    I just did a little poking around. The 1841 vintage arches were removed because the rail line was being lowered, drainage improved, and electrified along with those retaining walls being reinforced. The arches are supposed to be refurbished and according to a March issue of the Chorley Guardian should be back in place by the end of 2015.

    The steel arches will come down hopefully soon to have the stone ones re enstated. The work on the lowering of the tunnel floor and harpers lane bridge rebuild is due to start soon. Read for the power lines going in for the electric trains.

    Sad to see the old stone work go. But glad they removed intact and hope is was used another way. I would gladly have taken them

      They put them back up if you come back into the comments the first lot of comments a guy is showing them put back in place... that is why they took so long in taking them down...he has a link if you want to look..

      They were just sat back on top of the steels so now the flat ends of the arches poke up above road level. It looks a proper mess.

      Possession of the rails has strict time limits and it costs an astronomical amount if you run over. This means that every project will have roughly double the number of people so that if you find something unexpected that delays you, you have the extra manpower to deal with it in the allotted time.

    I didn't know that there were flying arches anywhere other than Swansea, the ones at Llansamlet being Brunel's design. I see this possession was done before railway workers had to wear orange trousers as well as jackets.

    Fantastic to see the efficiency of the Stobart organisation. God knows, we need them in ireland where there is no competition, only a dopey civil-service style outfit who are nakedly scared of competition and protected by successive governments. Back to Chorley. Magnificent work indeed but isn't it a pity that those lovely Victorian masonry arches had to go? Could they not have been retained and used to disguise the new steel arches?

    I think Niall O'Neill, you are being unfair to poor old IR !!. They have neither the staff or the money that network rail has. Network rail does not run the trains or supply them. IR does it all . I think they are doing a fantastic job. By the way .. have you seen the staffing on these Network Rail / Stobart jobs ??? .. no wonder tickets are so expensive in the UK !!. Other than that .. well done guys .. keep up the good work.

      Practically live ontop of the tunnel. the cutting is at the bottom of the road from me and the tunnel head is a 3 minute walk away

    if they werent going to reuse the stone arches y not just demo then to save man hours or who now maybe they were going to reuse then somewere else pretty cool tho nice job. ? how did they cut threw the stone.maybe with those chain cutters they use to cut marble...

      the stone was starting to show its age and wasnt 100% anymore. it all needed to be restored as its a listed structure. the works to lower the beds and modify was done in multiple stages. the steel work is where the overhead line gear will be afixed. and the track bed is about 50cm lower now than it was.

      Steel, wood & concrete sleepers are commonly used in the Uk, some stretches use ballastless trackbed too, with a concrete slab that the rails join directly to.

    wow a blast from the past... we called them "the shakey bridges" they are located near to astley village strawberry fields / chorley hospital and as kids we would run across them.. and as a kind of dare to see whos got the biggest balls we would wait for a train, lie in the middle above the tracks, then hold on for your life and they would rumble and shake.. and with the train rushing under, you could feel the air pressure blasting up... i cant believe how crazy we was for doing something so stupid... but what a rush.. literally. we did this as stupid kids as a kind of right of passage to one another.. but i do not condone this, playing on live train lines will get you killed ...

      They are concrete now. The wood was a temp mesure as the future updates would have ment ripping out most of the pretty new sleepers.

      Ouch. That hurts my eyes. To see old features like this destroyed in such a way, and then brought back only to be put on display obviously in the wrong place, on top of steel I-beams, an inferior material in an inferior position... Why didn’t they just lower the tracks the required amount and leave the historical arches where they were?

      There were two issues here, the fact that they were crumbling, as can be seen in the closer shots, and route clearance. The railway is not a heritage line.
      They were refurbished and put back, higher than they originally were

    There was no need to install "arches" when using steel I-beam. Especially when it made them weaker and they were only there to hold the two walls apart. The original arches were arched because with stone you HAVE to have an arch. As for the drainage, roadbed, rail and ballast, all I can say is wow. That track construction wouldn't even pass muster on a temporary spur line in the U.S. No wonder it suddenly got sped way up. That track, especially the line farthest away at the end of the video, had bends all all othe place and wasn't even close to level. One big hump was obvious as hell.
    But of course when you're laying track on a foot or two feet of crushed rock ( it's not ballast when it's fill - ballast hold the track in place - it should not support it when it's new construction with rock that is going to break up and settle in) which is laid over a hopelessly uneven "base" of dirt and clay that you've trenched and tiled for drainage right down the middle you're NEVER going to end up with a decent track.
    The other question is why they installed ground anchors to "hold" that wall when any ground or rock strong enough to anchor INTO is strong and solid enough to not NEED the retaining walls in the first place. And no doubt the retaining walls CAUSED the drainage walls in the first place since they basically created a canal in the cut between the two walls. Water coming down the hills to the walls couldn't do anything but pool behind them and run to the lower end which would flood that end.
    So they probably had wing walls at either end which kept the water behind the walls. Or at least until it seeped down through every crack and crevise very slowly and sat there until it percolated down through the soil or seeped through the wall and evaporated away. That all the wall is covered with thick moss is a pretty good indication the entire walls were complete saturated.
    The difference between what Americans are told about how awesome socialist European countries are at engineering, designing and building and what they actually end up with is just amazing. And the country that brags the most - the U.K. - should be seriously considering a massive government spending project to try to develop some sort of industrial base and educational system and economic system capable of producing skill laborers WITHOUT having them spend their most energetic, excited and impressionable years stuck in a ridiculous apprenticeship that only serves to let the old hands brainwash the new.
    Seriously, it's 2017 and you're still building railroads and operating trains like it's 1875 when it comes to freight. You can build all the fancy subways and "high speed rail" you want, but if you can't move large quanties of GOODS around the country in anything approaching an efficient fashion, you're pissing in the wind trying to maintain any sort of industry. And when you're pissing away untold amounts of resources and money on restoring steam locomotives for "heritage railways" and projects like THIS for your commercial rail infrastructure, you're already circling the drain.
    No wonder the U.K. took "opt-outs" on most of the EU requirements. They didn't want mainland Europeans coming in and traipsing around the countryside seeing that the U.K. is basically still stuck in 1950 when it comes to industrial and economic development. And even THAT is being generous since the U.K. has done nothing but import cash and export all the industry it can to avoid the HUGE infrastructure and utility upgrades it needs and which it will NEVER have the capacity to build on its own OR the capital to pay foreign companies to come and do it.
    But that's what you get when you rely on politics and diplomacy and control over lots of poor countries with valuable resources and uneducated populations for centuries. Eventually some major advance in technology and communication comes along and you just can't hide and lie about your tanking economy and inability to provide basic goods and services forever. The U.K. imports at least 40% of its food. That's not good.

      What are you even ranting about?
      They installed ground anchors because the track was lowered.
      The walls are not covered in thick moss. You should get your eyes tested. These things have been there over 100 years.
      The steels are arched because the original stonework was reinstated on top of those steels to preserve the historic build of the line. It would have looked stupid to have the stone arches and straight steel beams. IT also allows for the electrification equipment as well as the trains to pass underneath. A straight beam wouldn't.
      I'm sure the engineers factor in strength when designing these things. They didn't just pop down the shops and buy curved beams.
      You Yanks have a perverse obsession with ''socialism''. So much so that you no longer know what it is. You just associate it with Soviet communism and treat it as some sort of enemy. The UK is by no means a socialist country.
      Our ''tanking economy'' is still one of the better performers despite the best efforts of the US banks to financially ruin everyone.
      My God Chad you are so ''American''. Not all yanks are bad but there is a stereotypical view of the American male and you fit it perfectly. Even being called Chad.       The irony of you criticising the UK for it's empire when America has used control and bombs over poor countries for the recent past.
      The UK has done nothing apparently. Apart from the Jet engine, TV, Radio, Railways, the internet, (you know, the very thing you used to watch this video).
      Even the French used us to design the Millau Viaduct. We built Hong Kong airport. Another engineering feat. Even with our successive governments failing to properly invest in our country we still punch well above our weight in global terms.
      Of course we import food. A lot of that imported food is stuff we can't grow here. The western world no longer eats seasonally. America has the benefit of wide spaces and multiple states with different climates to support farming. as well as pumping your cattle full of steroids.
      Anyway, Pointless trying to explain things to you. You're no doubt pledging allegiance to the flag or shooting some black kid who walked through your neighbourhood

      Good job straw maning the main points of his post. Of course he is not going to bother understanding your "explanations".
      That EU rail is stucked in 1950 and UK rail is stucked in 1875 is a fact. No wording is able to change that. It is not about high speed, everybody is able to build and run anything if given unlimited tax payer money, it is about inability to operate freight railroads. It is a damn shame.
      UK is by no means a Socialist country? Tell that to Corbyn and his Communists Party. UK used to be the second country of Socialism, right after USSR and he is at it again. Like seriously, when will Socialist learn that private property is untouchable? It is private, it belongs to somebody, they cannot just steal it.
      Of course Capitalism does not work, if there is a system that breads mediocore, dependant persons, punish strong and frown upon sucess. And that there is only one world view. Or you think it is an accident that everythign of note comes from the USA? Where are European Gates, Berzosis or Jobses? Where are they? They do not exist. They are trampled by the system or fail to get a loan. I spent few years trying to conform to the mediocority, that Capitalism is evil and wealth is bad. If I were an American I would be a multi-milionare already. But no.     What can I say? I'm not much on saving old worn out structures.. As far as I'm concerned. Those who refuse to let go of the past can never reach the future!! As far as learning from past mistakes.. Fine! take a bloody picture already lets move to the future. Learn the RIGHT way to do it. And not worry about repeating the mistakes!

      Robert, what can I say? I can say, those arches were installed in 1841, were in perfect working order when removed after 167 years or continuous use without repair, and were only removed to electrify the rail line. So you are the one who needs to learn from your past mistakes. Do not repeat your mistake of writing comments that are wrong in every way.

    Why in God's name would you go to all that work and expense to eliminate the old arches and then put the damn things back in?Oh wait, if at some point you realized that the steel I-beams are strongest when STRAIGHT and that arching them WEAKENED them and that inevitably as they corrode they'll be weaker still, you would have just left the stone ones installed in the first place and installed additional, smaller STRAIGHT I-beams (the stone arches are arched because they're STONE - not because an arch is good for supporting HORIZONTAL loads) to brace the walls while you drilled and anchored, you wouldn't have had to remove the stone arches at all and wouldn't have to HANG them back in place. No doubt with a bunch more steel anchors, bolts, brackets and who knows what all "structure" to cobble them back in place. There was never any intention to reinstall those stone arches and the only reason they removed them in one piece was because they couldn't risk any demolition work even with the steel ones installed because it would have to be done from inside the structure and a big section of the wall could and probably would come crashing in as they knocked out the arches.
    As for the roadbed and track, all I can say is its a good thing they don't run real trains over there. When you're looking at 50 or 60 yards of rail in a time lapse video and you can still see bends and humps and there's nothing but a foot or more of rock and a horribly unlevel "roadbed" under that, you're looking at a maintenance nightmare waiting to happen. ESPECIALLY when there was trenching and tiling down down the MIDDLE of that "roadbed". No wonder someone hit the 2x and then 4x speed button on a time lapse video. I hope taxpayers aren't paying for that. Although I'm sure the "private company" that "owns" the railroad is a typical European shell corporation. Private in name only and government subsidized 6 ways from Sunday.

      You're wrong, the steel beams are arched so the load is distributed evenly into the walls at the side while maintaining sufficient clearance above - note the large plates to spread the lateral load on each wall. The tracks won't be levelled because the bed hasn't had time to settle - it will be a few weeks with a temporary speed restriction to allow the ground to settle, then they will do a final tamping before the track is complete.

      You get an A for your answer. Although the first answer was true, given this situation it's not the best solution. Railroads have been lowering tracks for 100 years. They know what they're doing. Key here is the space from the arch system allowing for more working height for larger trains in use today.

      What are you talking about? They took them down, refurbished them and reinstalled them.
      Are you saying you wanted the line closed for 2 years while they were worked on in situe?

    The steel arches will come down hopefully soon to have the stone ones re enstated. The work on the lowering of the tunnel floor and harpers lane bridge rebuild is due to start soon. Read for the power lines going in for the electric trains.
