For any one wondering his motive. When they recovered his body after police managed to get to him on the top of the tower and shot him dead they found a note in his front pocket. It said that he regretted the shooting and didn’t fully understand why he did it. He’d been having severe intrusive thoughts about killing for months before and probably thought enough was enough. The note said he wanted a brain scan and an autopsy of his brain to see what was wrong with him. He actually new something was wrong and they found a tumour in his head pressing on the violent thought and behaviour centre in the brain. Despite how shit this was it actually opened up a lot of discussion and understanding of psychology and the physical effects of the brain on behaviour.

The woman who was laying down next to the first victims, Tom and his pregnant girlfriend, had ran over to them as the shooting was still going on. She tried to help the woman, but she told her to get down. Rita, the girl who ran over, laid down on the burning pavement right next to the girl, talking to her to try and keep her awake and hopeful and letting her know that she’ll be okay and just stay awake. That girl was an absolute saint. She didn’t care if she got shot, she just didn’t want the girl to be alone through it. She’s one of my top ten favorite people in history
probably the only reason that Claire Wilson (the pregnant woman) survived. she kept her awake and distracted from the pain. Claire was hospitalized the most out of any other survivor, for three straight months. if I read correctly, the bullet tore through her intestines and her other organs, like her ovaries and womb. she could’ve fallen unconscious and died of blood loss.
Absolutely amazing! Tom Eckman was my my uncle. My dad was Tom's brother Mike Campbell. My Dad said that His brother was in SDS . And there were so many people shot from the UT SDS club which brought so many SDS members to the hospital. It was like an SDS convention. I'd absolutely love to get more information about my uncle Tom.

I was at the UT campus that morning, was one month and six days away from my fifth birthday, and going to speech therapy. The speech clinic at that time was on the ground floor of the UT Tower. My session ended at 11:00 am, and the sitter picked me up. Three quarters of an hour later, Charles Whitman turned the campus into a shooting gallery. Truth be told, I didn't know what had happened. What four-year-old kid pays attention to the news? I was a hyperactive little shit with other things on my mind. But I remember a few days later that all the kids at the daycare center kept asking me about "the man with a gun." That was so unusual I never forgot it. A lot of them were older kids, I'd say in their early teens or so. Most of them knew I went to the campus for therapy. It wasn't until I was in the eighth grade that I found out what happened, when I finally asked my folks. I told them about the kids at the daycare asking me about a man with a gun, and if they knew anything about it. They came clean. They were going to tell me when I was a few years older, but since I asked they told me then. By then I knew about Charles Whitman and what he did, but I didn't know how close I came to being a witness to a dark part of Texas history, so to speak. Talk about having your mind blown.

Starting at 1:56 you can see one girl getting up and running off with some guys, but then a second girl being carried away by two other guys. That was Claire Wilson, who was eight months pregnant and lost the baby, after being shot in the abdomen. The lifeless guy in the plaid shirt carried right after that by one guy was her boyfriend Tom Eckman. He didn't make it. Sad day and the first mass school shooting.
Some of these rescues of the casualties are an amazing thing to watch. The bravery shown in this footage is really impressive. Particularly the guys who evacuated the pregnant girl and the young man. I doubt I'd have had the courage to do anything other than maybe shout warnings or directions.
If that happened now, there would be a bunch of whiny little boy-girls trying to record & post to their their social media first, so they can have as many hits as possible. Nobody would help rescue nor evacuate the injured!

I believe Tom's father was a college professor in Ohio somewhere. The man carrying him was a vietnam veteran. Brave guy. You can see him struggle under Tom's weight but eventually limp off.
My dad had just started summer classes at UT and happened to be eating at some place on the drag with his roommate when the shooting started. They heard the shots and saw a bunch of people standing around looking up. He said it was, by far, the weirdest day he had ever had. My grandparents were desperately trying to get in touch with him, but the phone lines were clogged up, so they drove from Galveston, all the way to Austin at a high rate of speed and finally found my dad in the parking lot of the dorm with a bunch of other students huddled around talking about the day's events. I was born in Austin and still live on the outskirts (West side) and every time I drive into town I can see the tower looming in the background and it gives me the f*cking creeps!!

I just walked around the tower area last week and through the building. I think it’s sad that there isn’t a plaque, sign, or marker of any kind to commemorate the loss of life here; it’s as though it never happened. It was strange looking down the hallway to the elevator.
It was a day that shook America to the core. Nothing on this scope had happen before. This day in American history actually started on the evening of July 31, 1966. That evening Charles Whittman murdered his mom, then his wife, he then write a letter trying to explain his actions. He explained he murdered both ti keep them from being embarased from his action of the next day. I feel for the people he murdered and wounded. What he did was terrible. However i feel for him in the sense he need help and did not get it. He was a Eagle Scout, a former marine with Honorable discharge, well mannered, did not do Heroin or any drug, was studying at college. Now do not take it wrong, what he did was terrible and i am glad he was stopped by 2 police officers.

This happened two years before I was born. I remember several years ago, there was a documentary about this on TV. It was disturbing to watch. I can't begin to imagine the horror felt by everyone who was there on that campus that day. Such a horrific tragedy!

I was a year old when this happened . I was born at the old Bergstrom AFB in Austin. My dad was down on The Drag getting his haircut when bullets starting coming through the windows. Dad was a WW2 vet and said that it gave him a real quick flash back as he was hitting the floor.
One victim was in a barber shop. Perhaps that is the same one. My mom was on campus and pregnant with me. They were rushed into a basement classroom because he had a view of their windows.

One thing interesting was that Charkes Whitman stated in his will that they do an autopsy primarily around his brain because he said that the thougts of wanting to kill innocent people had something to do with an undiscovered conditionn and when they did, they found a rather sized tumor there. Leaves us to wonder if tumors and cancer have something to do with putting people in that mindset.

Maybe the general atmosphere of the 60s influenced him. Cold War fears the fight for Civil Rights the idea that society was changing fast. Those things possibly drove him towards the idea that its an era where you must leave your mark on society. And to be fair he is probably one of the most influential lower class americans of the 60s.His actions 'inspired' many others. The bolt action part though that seems more like availability. Circa 1965 bolt action rifles were still the norm among average folk. Heck even today they're common.Usually it takes 25-35 years for the transition from one set of weapons to another to occur. Semiautomatic rifles became Army standard in the late 30s. I think it was more of an availability thing.

After all these years, and horrific mass shootings, it's haunting to go back and revisit the story of Charles Whitman. In retrospect, the most disturbing thing about it is you wonder why nobody thought of it sooner. These rampages have become almost a daily event in the United States, and reflecting on this event one ponders what is it about American life that is so fucked up that individuals feel there is nothing left for them to do but kill vast amounts of people at random. Personally, I can never understand it. Life is not that hard if you know how to live it. The key is to keep living.
It could happen today but more awareness and more swat teams. Plus society then was a bit more tame in some aspects. it's kinda crazy to see the massive crowd of ppl just watching the dead & injured get taken away on gurneys. Things are much more squared off and locked down nowadays for safety ofc, but It's like a physical representation of how we interact with videos & pictures of tragedies, shootings, etc, on social media. Some of these rescues of the casualties are an amazing thing to watch. The bravery shown in this footage is really impressive.
Particularly the guys who evacuated the pregnant girl and the young man.
I doubt I'd have had the courage to do anything other than maybe shout warnings or directions.
If that happened now, there would be a bunch of whiny little boy-girls trying to record & post to their their social media first, so they can have as many hits as possible. Nobody would help rescue nor evacuate the injured!

Agreed. I think the person you're referring to being carried was named Tom Eckman. Died at the scene. If you watch closely you can see his arms flopping, a dead weight. Truly sad. I believe Tom's father was a college professor in Ohio somewhere. The man carrying him was a vietnam veteran. Brave guy. You can see him struggle under Tom's weight but eventually limp off.
My dad had just started summer classes at UT and happened to be eating at some place on the drag with his roommate when the shooting started. They heard the shots and saw a bunch of people standing around looking up. He said it was, by far, the weirdest day he had ever had. My grandparents were desperately trying to get in touch with him, but the phone lines were clogged up, so they drove from Galveston, all the way to Austin at a high rate of speed and finally found my dad in the parking lot of the dorm with a bunch of other students huddled around talking about the day's events. I was born in Austin and still live on the outskirts (West side) and every time I drive into town I can see the tower looming in the background and it gives me the f*cking creeps!!

I just walked around the tower area last week and through the building. I think it’s sad that there isn’t a plaque, sign, or marker of any kind to commemorate the loss of life here; it’s as though it never happened. It was strange looking down the hallway to the elevator.

That evening Charles Whittman murdered his mom, then his wife, he then write a letter trying to explain his actions.
He explained he murdered both ti keep them from being embarased from his action of the next day.
I feel for the people he murdered and wounded. What he did was terrible. However i feel for him in the sense he need help and did not get it. He was a Eagle Scout, a former marine with Honorable discharge, well mannered, did not do Heroin or any drug, was studying at college.
Now do not take it wrong, what he did was terrible and i am glad he was stopped by 2 police officers.

This happened two years before I was born. I remember several years ago, there was a documentary about this on TV. It was disturbing to watch. I can't begin to imagine the horror felt by everyone who was there on that campus that day. Such a horrific tragedy!
Especially since it happened in 1966 - people were just not aware of mass shooters back then. Doesn’t help that Whitman was a trained killer with the perfect place to shoot from .

If I had to guess its probably a Bolex 16mm without audio attachments. Typical newsreel standard. For sound to be recorded, that is a completely different production.

I was a year old when this happened . I was born at the old Bergstrom AFB in Austin. My dad was down on The Drag getting his haircut when bullets starting coming through the windows. Dad was a WW2 vet and said that it gave him a real quick flash back as he was hitting the floor.

One victim was in a barber shop. Perhaps that is the same one. My mom was on campus and pregnant with me. They were rushed into a basement classroom because he had a view of their windows.

Back in the 50s and 60s this wasn't a common thing where someone would brings guns to school and starts killing students unlike nowadays.
@@CrossOfBayonne back then you could take your guns to school. They had gun safety courses and hunting safety courses back then. Wasn't a big thing to see guns in gun racks in vehicles parked in the school parking lots.
I had just turned 5 yrs old the day before... My family lived close to downtown, that day my lil brother & i were playing in a kiddie pool & i can remember my mom running out to us & getting us out of the pool & rushing us inside... She told us a man was shooting a gun.. She was afraid those bullets could reach our home... Stuck in mind since that day.... Sad day !

One thing interesting was that Charkes Whitman stated in his will that they do an autopsy primarily around his brain because he said that the thougts of wanting to kill innocent people had something to do with an undiscovered conditionn and when they did, they found a rather sized tumor there. Leaves us to wonder if tumors and cancer have something to do with putting people in that mindset.
Oh BS, my guess is that he already knew about the tumor and just used it as an excuse to not look like a bad person, sociopaths are always trying to minimize their guilt in the things they do.

Maybe the general atmosphere of the 60s influenced him. Cold War fears the fight for Civil Rights the idea that society was changing fast. Those things possibly drove him towards the idea that its an era where you must leave your mark on society. And to be fair he is probably one of the most influential lower class americans of the 60s.His actions 'inspired' many others. The bolt action part though that seems more like availability. Circa 1965 bolt action rifles were still the norm among average folk. Heck even today they're common.Usually it takes 25-35 years for the transition from one set of weapons to another to occur. Semiautomatic rifles became Army standard in the late 30s. I think it was more of an availability thing.

After all these years, and horrific mass shootings, it's haunting to go back and revisit the story of Charles Whitman. In retrospect, the most disturbing thing about it is you wonder why nobody thought of it sooner. These rampages have become almost a daily event in the United States, and reflecting on this event one ponders what is it about American life that is so fucked up that individuals feel there is nothing left for them to do but kill vast amounts of people at random. Personally, I can never understand it. Life is not that hard if you know how to live it. The key is to keep living.

Most all 8 mmm and 16mm had no sound , have to wait until 70s for home video with audio to become widely and cheaply available.

@ReturnoftheBrotha sadly, although that is a general statement, and untrue, it's not untrue that many violent and horrible crimes are committed by the army and Marines on the same soil they swore to defend.
It's the way they're made. One of their cadences is literally "kill, kill, kill". The cult that the Marine corps actually is is what predisposes them to horrific and violent tendencies. The way the government treats them afterwards, just straight up tossing them out with very little transitional training or employable skills, just ends up adding fuel to a dark fire that the government ignited in them.

Some audio would've been nice to explain how the footage went from scatterings of people under attack or helping victims to hundreds of people all crowded together like some kind of political rally. Who were all those people? They certainly didn't look as if they had anything to do with the university.
Looks like where people were gathering and they were discussing how they were gonna stop him. Just a guess.
Near the end the crowds were after word was spreading that the shooter was down. Students rushing back on campus.

it's kinda crazy to see the massive crowd of ppl just watching the dead & injured get taken away on gurneys. Things are much more squared off and locked down nowadays for safety ofc, but It's like a physical representation of how we interact with videos & pictures of tragedies, shootings, etc, on social media. So many eyes watching, morbid curiosity peaking their interest. We humans haven't changed a bit and it's kinda fascinating in a way.
