The first video I ever watched on RUclips, in 2007. Superb reporting by NBC News and Austin television newsman Neal Spelce.

Unfortunately, I was only 8 years old then. I was just too young to understand what went on back then. Now that I'm 62 (I'll be 63 in October), I now know that this was a terrible and a tragic day.

This must have seemed unimaginable at the time.

It was. Mark Gabour was a classmate of my older brother. He was touring the campus with his parents, older brother, aunt and uncle. We heard this over the radio and I remember my brother saying "Hey, Mark's there. Maybe he's seeing this." Mark and his mother were already dead and his brother was shot by then. I drove past Mr. Gabour's service station too many times to count. Twice a day during my three years in high school.

it was a bout 100 degrees that day. people who were hit and fell, had severe burns just from laying on asphalt .Whitman, when he had the deck to himself, left on his janitor coveralls(a costume to gain access to the deck) ,which covered jeans and a flannel shirt, while wearing a headband to catch the sweat so he could see his targets clearly. and of course, he brought water. logical but illogical.

for all the mass school killings since,it's totally different seeing it happen in real time.

I wonder what became of the shooter's young children. He had a son and a daughter.

He let his doctor and the people around him know that he was having problems, and knew he wasn't "right" in the weeks leading up to this. He was ignored and patronized. A large brain tumor was discovered during his autopsy.

Has there ever been any explanation why he would have ignored him or why any psychologist would do that?
Think the same thing happened with James Huberty who killed those people at that San Diego McDonald's in 84.

@@MIKECNW I believe at in one true crime documentary, they stated that psychologist believed he was suffering delusions from his time in the Marines and had suggested that Whitman comeback for a follow up visit. Whitman of course never did. Because of this laws were changed.

The 'tumor' was about the size of a pea. And the argument has been made that IF there were a tumor it wouldn't have had any effect one way or the other. That may have been just a urban legend that people accept as true now.

Ktbc was NBC followed by CBS now owned by fox.

Nope! Not true. In 1966, KTBC TV was the only network affiliate in Austin. Therefore it 'was' ABC, CBS, NBC, and Mutual (a fourth network). Not until later, did KXAN secure its' affiliation with NBC. The station was purchased several years ago by FOX Broadcasting. KTBC had a problem deciding which popular programming available from the four networks it would 'allow' to air for Central Texas viewers. Therefore, a lot of popular shows could not be seen in Austin, and some others were shown on taped delay at odd times. The station was owned by President Lyndon B Johnson at the time. Monopoly greed at its' best!

And that's the way broadcast reporting should be...unemotional and detached with an emphasis on simply getting out the facts clearly and concisely. Both Huntley and Austin television newsman Neal Spelce succeeded in this on this day.
