Edit: kept watching when i got back home and i actually agree with the point you make about how planting seeds of bigotry is alot easier to do than making someone a full bigot e.g. in this case an anti semite. Thats fair and I can definitely see how that might be the case w/ ye's audience based on the interactions i see them have online
"Future is not the person that made people not treat women right"
Shawn if ur reading this, i hope this doesnt come across the wrong way, i understand most of what uv said in your video and agree with a whole chunk, not tryna argue for the sake of arguing or ruin anyones day, ig im just tryna show that there are reasonable people who are ig not on the other side of this issue but have contentions with how public figures are handling and responding to the kanye dialogue.
So that being said, i found the fact u said this to be interesting, bc from my perspective as far as i can tell that type of logic also applies to kanye. From what iv seen online, being in alot of kanye spaces over the years and now having to distance myself, kanye didnt convince his pre existing fanbase to become anti semitic. Kanye developed a new fanbase by attracting a bunch of people who were already anti semitic and or alt right. I do not think that anything kanye has said on his platform has been coherent or cohesive enough to convince anyone of anything they didnt already want to believe on some level - because he was clearly just going on schizoative paranoid delusional rants because he is an egotistical person who thanks to his schizoactive paranoia mixed with bi polar and all the crap he was dealing with in his life went down an illuminati type rabbit hole, yet people like fantano intentionally choose to ignore this part of the dialogue and treat and criticise him in the same way you would trump or alex jones or actual evil bigoted dishonest actors.
To be clear, IM NOT SAYING WE SHOULDNT BE USING OUR PLATFORMS TO CRITICISE KANYE OR THE STUFF HE SAYS. What i am saying is that if we are going to, we need to be more open and honest about the full picture of what is happening here, because as someone who suffers from bi polar and cptsd, it is honestly heartbreaking and feels gaslighty watching everyone continue to dismiss the very big role kanye's instability is playing in all this, treating him as if he has the same level of self control, awareness or even understanding of what is happening as anyone else while he is clearly mid episode.
Alot of people dont understand alot of mental health disorders other than basic things like anxiety and depression, and kanye could be a really good starting point for a dialogue about the seriousness of different mental health conditions and how they can deeply affect your understanding of reality. I think Kanye is a perfect example of how bad it can get. And ig as someone who while not delusional has had alot of my perspective on life jarringly flipped upside down in different periods of my life because of my cptsd and bi polar, it hurts knowing that this is all the world will ever be willing to do to understand us. People want to spread mental health awareness but they never want to truly understand. And ig that hurts, life is not easy for me at the moment. I'm constantly at risk of being in d ward and the only thing that stops me is even tho im not safe being in d ward triggers my ptsd making shit worse because hospitals are a trigger for me.
Anyway, peace and love to everyone, i really hope people read this, im not here to try and make anyone think kanye's behaviour is ok or it isnt important to push back on the things he says because like shawn said they are dangerous ideas and thats exactly what people should do with their platforms. Ig i just wish we tried to have a more human understanding of these situations. Lord knows i have done some things i regret in mental states where i didnt feel fully in control, and im lucky im not famous and the only people that know are people who actually know me and dont unfairly judge my while character, which i feel alot of the time people like fantano seem to do with kanye. And i think thats unfair and dangerous in its own way. It certainly turns off audience members like me i feel as much as him ignoring the anti semitic comments would for his jewish audience members.
P.S - apologies if this isnt very coherent, it was actually really hard to write this without getting emotional and my thoughts were all over the place. Its embarrassing to admit but its the truth so eh no point hiding it

I also have bipolar disorder (bipolar 1 w/ psychotic episodes to be exact). I somewhat can relate to what Kanye is going through (minus the bigotry) because due to a series of psychotic episodes I went through I was also paranoid and lashed out often. However I did get help and also was able to find a good therapist (after 3 attempts). I do grade Kanye on a curve because I can understand what he is going through, but I do think people’s criticisms are fair because he refuses to get help. However I completely agree with you that people don’t want to take the time to understand how mental illness can cause someone to act, which requires having sympathy for someone, which a lot of people aren’t willing to do

I think Sean did a similar thing but the difference is when he said whilst one of the reasons I don’t want to listen to the album is to platform the white supremacist co-signs and anti-Semitic comments the main reason is I’d just rather not listen to the album being such a big Kanye fan of his old material and I haven’t enjoyed a release from him for a long time (because tbf sean didn’t even like kids see ghosts lmao) so he hasn’t gained enough faith in the fact he will like it. That’s his opinion whereas Fantano did a half-arsed review and just spoke about Kanye at length and criticised him, which btw were valid points imo but you can’t call an album unreviewable and proceed to review it super half-assed after going on a rant when people watch his videos for articulate music critiques. But tbf to Fantano it is hard to separate the music from the artist when the content is still about the controversies that have happened but still

To be fair fantano did a live reaction like he does every week for new releases. It’s not like Shawn hasn’t turned in half assed first listens before because he gets caught up with chat. Ultimately fantano reviews a lot of material, so it makes sense that he wouldn’t be inclined to revisit and give it another listen outside of livestream, especially when he had stated he didn’t care to check it out at the moment given the state of mind Kanye has had. People shouldn’t take his review to heart, same for Shawn’s feelings on this. It makes sense that they don’t want to use their platform to platform kanye right now. Chat definitely got to fantano though, but I can’t imagine what his feed/dm’s have looked like since he initially stated his distaste towards the music and Kanye’s statements

  • @changedcj007

I feel like this conversation is much more nuanced then shawn gave it credit for. Like his whole point that fantanio SHOULD be advocating against the album because he has a platform and he should fight against what kanye is saying and that kanye is different to future in what his views are is faulty or not seeing the big picture for me.
Lets be real here, rap as a genre is incredibly misogynistic. Alot of the views young men have on women in todays culture comes from rap. Drill rap, melodic rap, alot of these genres talk about women in a very negative way. Even in the 90's this was a problem. This isint even getting into drill rap and how negatively that has effected young black men. (Of course that isint specifically the core problem, but it dosent help. But the misogynistic point has had a HUGE impact on how young men view women and how they are viewed irl and in media.)
So at this point, shouldent fantano talk about all of those rap albums, and call them unreviewable? What that chatter said about future, while obviously future isint the main perpetrator if we use their logic and say MOST of rap, their point would stand. But fantanio HAS reviewed those albums and has called alot of them GOOD. And you cant say separate the art from the artists because those views ARE in the songs. At this point you can ONLY listen to conscious rappers like kendrick, or j cole. What about all of the albums mentioning drugs and glorifying drugs etc.
There is more problems I have with shawn cees points in the video, but this is the main one I just hard disagreed with him on

If he doesn't like the album or dont wanna review it because of the stuff surrounding it; platform white supremacy is a better way to frame the optics of the review.
The politics within the music ruins some of it, but to alienate a portion of his audience that just doesnt care for the political angle isnt smart imo.

      1. Fantano saying the album is un reviewable primarily because the artist is heavily putting his politics into the art, or the artist themselves being a questionable person comes off as hypocritical.
He's reviewed People like Tom McDonald, and Killer Mike who spit hateful, ignorant and uninformed information and create bigoted people similar to Kanye.
Like Shawn said although it's not to the same degree of outreach of someone like Kanye West it doesn't take away the fact that those artists are who they are .
Also from the stream , and the timing of the review it seemed like Fantano didn't want to genuinely review the album.

Like Fantano said there was a large portion of people who were just hip hop fans , but he's talking like that crowd suddenly merged or doesn't exist anymore.
The implications that group doesn't exist anymore puts people in the situation where they are unfairly being associated with a group of people they don't align with, or they simply don't matter.
Again I think most people aren't upset with Fantanos underlying message , but some things he said didn't come out well thought.
He conveys this thought Better throughout the video;that Kanye is attracting ,and creates x types of fans.

@@Synical02 Thanks for the effort to respond. I'll say this: 1. I don't think that having reviewed a bad influence in the past makes you somehow morally obliged to review another bad influence. People are obsessed with this 'hypocrisy' but they're not even arguing against any of Fantano's takes or choosing a side - they're just arguing that his takes aren't consistent, which is not a valid counter-argument imo.
      2. When he talks about Kanye fans, I think it's clear he means people that like Kanye, i.e. Kanye supporters, not people that listen to his music. After all, Fantano has enjoyed Kanye's music. Therefore I don't think he alienates anyone.

    • @Synical02

@@prodigion1 That's why I said I think many people aren't upset with his underlying Messages ,and what's he's trying to convey , just how he delivered it came off in a way that rubbed people the wrong way that gave off the idea he felt a certain way.
Obviously with the context of his stream people understand the stream DEFINITELY set him off a little bit .
But the point of his inconsistency is that it is a different argument; I don't think necessarily think he's obligated to review X bad person if he's stomached X bad person too.
I think the unreviewable; It's just surprising to a lot of people because ,he's reviewed certain people like Tom for example who he despises and is harmful as well, but went through with it anyway so the assumption was he could stomach this too .

I think the whole “I am Hitler” stuff and white supremacy stuff is his way of saying “nothing I say can stop me”.
It’s kinda like how people say the most famous people have the weirdest kinks. Like only millionaires are having golden showers if you know what I mean. After a certain point, you run out of things that make you feel good when you can have anything you want in life.
Kanye in 2005 was focused on getting to the top of music and fashion.
By 2015, he felt he was getting there, but it wasn’t the same satisfaction with it due to constant stimulation. He needed something new. So his music shifted to releasing anything he wants (poopity whoop) music wise and fashion wise (releasing bland grey clothing with holes and stains for hundreds of dollars a pop).
Now it’s 2024. He hasn’t gone anywhere and releasing more music isn’t increasing his power or influence. So, now he’s gonna do the same thing he did in other paths. He’s gonna say anything he wants knowing he’ll get support, in hopes that it also boosts his influence. His plans to run for President are real, if he lives for 20 more years then there’s gonna be a year he has a real shot and I think he knows that.
Don’t believe me? Trump ran for President 4 times before he got elected. All his fans think he ran for the first time in 2016. Thats influence.

What's crazy to me is Shawn says Future and the like are not nearly big enough to be a root problem when it comes to other morally wrong things such as misogyny, murder and the like, and that other rappers/singers who have murdered and killed are not big enough to have an affect or change people's perspective on certain topics (which isn't true btw) but then says it's him and Fantanos responsibility to push back against Kayne because they have large platforms so essentially and he is one of the biggest artist in the world. So what I'm can infer is
    - Kanye is the root of Anti-semitism? It definitely hasn't been in inherent problem in the U.S and been openly a problem for a long time now
    - Murder isn't as accepted in society so no need to push back against it?
    - If you aren't as big as ye you don't need to be talked about?
    - You only push back against people if it's popular
These are the arguments I heard, I know there are going to be dweebs bringing up nuance and the articulations of the situation but the reality is you either push back against everyone who has said or done something "bad" bad, or wrong or you don't talk about it at all and go back to making "unbiased" music reviews otherwise you are the definition of a hypocrite plain and simple.

Rap as a genre was founded as an expression of the systemic struggles and adversity that black people faced. Things like murder, the over sexualization of women, and general crime of that nature is very present in rap because it’s the conditions that these artists grew up in. When you grew up in those areas, you probably joined a gang and yes probably killed people. That’s the experience that is forced upon black people. Things like anti semitism aren’t a product of a forced experience and instead are willingly taken on and learned, thus it’s not nearly as acceptable.
I do however have a problem with homophobia in rap, and how it’s hand waved away as being a product of their time, but imo if an artist is a bigot, then they aren’t worth revering in any capacity. Or at the very least should be openly disavowed for their views until they change for the better. For example Nas made it a point to remove all the homophobic slurs from illmatic when he had last performed it live. Stuff like that I think makes it more acceptable to embrace their legacy in the genre, whereas as far as I know DMX never reconciled with his homophobic rhetoric in any capacity.
The hardest point to reconcile though for me is how not just rap, but most genres degrade women regularly and it’s seen as okay. I’ll openly admit I’m hypocritical because I enjoy music that does degrade women, despite having a problem with it, but I would genuinely love to see that change in all music

      2. Like Shawn said multiple times throughout the video because idiots like you keep bringing up this point and it’s that if you have a platform and morals and ethics (something kanye does not have), it makes sense and is completely necessary that you voice your opinion as well, if someone is hates racism yet has to wake up everyday constantly hearing that this one famous guy keeps saying and doing more racist stuff, would you still ignore it?
      3. The people saying that melon is just “virtue signaling” and the he actually doesn’t give a single shit he’s just doing it for the money he’s going to get from all these videos are again incredibly stupid as the haters are the ones watching his videos giving him money anyway and even if it’s wrong, the same people complaining about this are the same people literally streaming Kanye’s music and giving him monetary gain, more of a monetary gain then what fantano will ever receive.
The Kanye fanboys just need to accept they’re wrong with this one and anything and everything they say to go against fantano and defend Kanye is completely wrong and can be disproved instantly. Hi shawn, I agree completely on your first point. I just wanted to say that I also "deal" with people who suffer from similar problems that Kanye has shown. I have a friend who has a degree of bipolar disorder, mental instability, suicidal tendencies and anxiety. She will sometimes cut herself, attempt suicide, or overdose on pills and stuff like that. And yet, despite all of that, she's the sweetest, most lovely person I've met in quite some time. Even though she's well aware of her struggles and problems, she doesn't use that as an excuse for poor attitude. It's the opposite, she uses her diagnosis as a way of move foward and provide for her loved ones all the energy and love that she has. And when we call her out on a certain attitude or idea we think it's not adequate, she corrects herself and tries to be better. There is NO excuse for what Kanye is doing, doesn't matter the syndrome he has, if my friend, who barely has enough money to live in respectable conditions and who gets bullied in her classroom by other students, can do it, then a billionare with millions of fans around the world should do it too

Honestly I kinda agree with Fantano here. Seeing Kanye on such a gradual downward spiral has really affected our perception of Kanye as an individual. This isn't a case of being able to separate the art from the artist because Kanye's behavior over the last 2yrs has been insane. The messy release with Donda 2, his divorce with Kim and his beef with Drake. We can't separate the art from the artist when the artist themselves are spewing negative rhetoric on the album, even if he does it in a tongue and cheek way, he's still doing it, he's saying these things in his songs and to separate that just for the sake of listening to a song you consider good would be like wearing a blindfold and falling asleep while your car is driving full speed down the high way.
Fantano isn't grading/reviewing the album because it's ungradable/unreviewable. He's looking at Kanye and his fans and assessing why they've become so problematic. The album is more a display of Kanye's lunacy so it's easier for Melon to use it as a jumping point to talk about the more serious issue, which is Kanye and his terrible behavior.
I'm not disputing the fact that it seems like Fantano is extremely angry and it might seem cringe cause he chooses to engage with Kanye's fans instead of just ignoring them and just talking about his dislikes about Kanye. But it's what happens when the artist you are talking about is one of the biggest artists in the entire fucking world. Fantano can't avoid them cause they will hound him until Kanye's next record.

It’s okay to ask for consistency, but not only does that show that you don’t watch as much of his content but that all the “whataboutisms” you fans are spewing, make you look even more foolish because your hero is being criticized. And why??? Cause white people didn’t view her as white… now that he is married to a more culturally assigned white woman.. everything is an issue. Now it’s being asked if shes ok, is Kanye making her do this stuff, oh he disrespecting her….. it’s wild. Have you heard Bionca talk?? Are you familiar with her prior to the Kanye? Trust me, she’s not being forced to do anything lol. Now look, I would love to have some old Kanye music again, I would love to see him link up with past collaborators and get back to the good music days… but the truth is, if Kanye was the old Kanye, we would have moved on from him long ago. Kanye is still culturally relevant and musically cause he knows how to do both rather you like it or not. You gone hear his name, you gone hear his music, you gone see his wife lol, you gone see a pair of Yeezys on every 5th set of feet. Yall call him crazy but he is very well aware of what he’s doing. Yes. I would listen to von before i listen to a racist song talking about black people. Why cant they both be bad? People are more worried about youtubers being hypocrites more than Kanye literally being antisemtic. Doesn’t make sense.
