The USA shopping is based on big spaces where you can by almost everything, because it is a car dependent society. Community living has basically disappeared in America. You by all the stuff for the whole week, and you go back to your golden cage and live like a hermit. Tip to all Americans: when you come to Europe enjoy waking the streets and sitting at the nearest café, and enjoy the humanity around you. Make your shopping runs an opportunity to be part of your new community. The feeling that you are not alone, and you are part of something bigger than your lonely self will be your biggest revelation.

@OurBlackUtopia nope I have to read everything I purchase. They'll have ingredients then look further down on a separate line, it say bio engineer. The farmers market they have seedless watermelon, and then the other side has a sign saying seeded watermelon. It's 🤪

I'm afraid they may close the gates! Guys I love your channel but on replay there are commercials (for me) like very 4-5 minutes or so, many commercials splitting up your content- of course I understand having some commercials....not asking for none...

I planned to leave in 1984...
I had offers from my hosts/acquaintances in Canada, the then USSR, and Japan.
In a LOT of ways, I regret not leaving, but on the other hand...
Anyway, I'm glad to see someone who looks like me living the dream.
    GO HEAD ON!

Hi Halisi and Ric 👋🏾. I'm no longer "planning"...I DID IT! Our mutual friend, Stephanie Perry, interviewed me a couple months ago...A Black Woman Abroad at 62. Since that espisode, I have relocated to Panama. Right now, I'm housesitting and traveling the world. Guess what...next week I'm going to Lisbon, then Porto.

Hey, guys! Katt here and I am loving the replay. Long post ahead, but I wanna back you guys up on a few things. For reference, I have been living in Costa Rica for almost a year now with my daughter. My mom is planning to retire here next year and so she travels back and forth - she, myself or other family members bring my Amazon orders from the US. LOL. One of the most recent items was a pastry utensil 'toolkit' because they do NOT have Pillsbury biscuits here either. 😄
They have a Pricesmart here (which is basically Costco/Sam's) and last year I was able to find refrigerated pie crusts. However, that seemed to be a holiday thing, because I have not seen them since, and I never saw them at any other store. I saw some frozen pie crusts in a grocery store, but they were $12 for a pack of 2 and I was not trying to pay that!
My next Amazon order will contain a taco shell maker. We are not THAT far from Mexico that I have to make my own tortillas like you do, but a hard-shelled taco is nowhere to be found.
The plain chips here are also lacking in salt. I was choking some down the other day wishing they were Lays and I thought to myself that maybe, just maybe, plain chips will be another thing I have to give up. They do have some Frito Lay brands here, but the prices are not worth it, so I don't buy them.
There is chicken broth here, but it is imported and very expensive. In CR, they use the cubes or the dried granules will be ground and in a container in the seasoning section or by the soups.
They do have Walmart here, and that is very nice, but it is smaller than what you would find in the US and does not have a huge variety of items. However, I can find clothes, a chicken, motor oil and a TV there. 🤣
I can relate to Ric's fear of driving. Here in CR, it is scary trying to get around. We did buy a car and I am glad that we did. I originally envisioned myself walking here and there, but the infrastructure in the places where we wanted to live is not like what you have in Lisbon. Also, my knees are not what they used to be, and CR is hilly and mountainous all day every day and the rainy season is nothing to mess with. LOL I only go where I absolutely have to go cuz driving around here feels like I am taking my life in my hands!
On the topic of friends, I have made local Tico friends organically here just by meeting a person who knows another person...etc., have made some friends from a retreat that I went to and also via the internet. Most notably, Stephanie and I linked up because I had been watching her channel and I realized that she was moving to Costa Rica. We managed to meet up one time when she was here and since then we've hung out on several occasions and we chat with good 'ol WhatsApp. She has housesat for me a few times and, funnily enough, even filmed at my house - so strange to see my pool online. 😄
What I find most interesting is that I have more friends here in CR than I did in the US and that is because I actually have TIME to cultivate relationships. As you mentioned, other countries foster a sense of priority on family and friends. The US wants you so busy that you don't to see what is going on around you or if you do, you don't have the energy to do anything about it. Like you, I am still a US citizen, and I will be flying back to vote in November (and to pick up more Amazon packages). Go Kamala! 💙

@@OurBlackUtopia Hey, guys! Thanks for the offer. I will certainly reach out to you within the next month or so. I say this because we are in the middle of some residency and other bureaucratic stuff as well as gearing up for a move to another city here in CR. I'd like to have that stuff wrapped up so that I can speak more holistically about the experience and what (good/bad) has transpired along the way.
If everything works out in a timely fashion, I will be in possession of all my CR residency docs and speaking to you from our new rental in the beginning of November. Fingers crossed!

Great premise, awesome video. The idea of leaving the US for a better life is, ironically, crazy to the AA/Black community. It shouldn't be, but the reason it is is bc we have been forced to accept as normal all the trauma and bullshit we've had to endure. Wake up people! Your sanity is calling. Whatever anyone feels they may be giving up will not equal what is gained by leaving. We know this but our feelings are keeping too many of us from heeding that call.

NYYT - I cannot be that cynical. Power structures may not support nor respect us. But I've met too many Portuguese that are not from the African diaspora, that are absolutely thrilled that we are here and who tune in every week. We've broken bread with them etc. The Portuguese people of today are humble, gracious, and have gone out of their way to help us and others that we know.
It is their nature - they are more community oriented. I've had white men give up their bus seats for me. I've had older white ladies offer to hold my groceries in their lap because there was no place for me to sit. No, I will remain a person who generates love for my fellow human beings, until they prove they are not worthy.
But your original comment said "danger". There are very few guns here and Portugal is the 6th safest country on the planet. Now, if a Putin situation happens we are financially nimble enough to get out of dodge ASAP and we have permanent residency in MX.

Emergency care in public hospitals is allways stressfull, you have to wait long hours, but in Agust is more than a nighmare! Listen to the news, they all talk about how the hospitals are getting more and more colapsed. But, hei, its August, and as the "frutaria" and restaurant near you, doctors and nurses also take their vacacions. Its Europe LOL

You can exchange your American driving license, which is a process.
You do not need to do a writing test or driving text.
Before you leave the States get all the documents Apostille and your driving licence should be good for at least 1 year.
