    I've decided to simplify and get rid of all my pocket diapers..
    Doing inserts and covers now. Absorbent, simple, cheap, and easy to wash :)

      We did this on our recent vacation to Hawaii and LOVED it! So simple. Cut my dry time in half - my covers and wetbags dried outside overnight, the flats got a half an hour in the dryer. No stuffing. 👍 it was perfect!

    Yes!! Second this quality inserts are a must! I’m in Australia so doesn’t matter what inserts we use dry time is the same about 4 hours inside and an hour outside 😂 love my smartbottoms inserts and thirsties!!

    Absorbency is key. Leaks suck! My go tos are small gmd cotton prefolds, Large gmd muslin flats, diy stretch flats and Geffen quick absorbers as boosters where needed.

    I use the intermediate blue edge green mountain diaper prefold on my 8m old son. For night time I use a OS GMD muslin flat and Geffen hemp insert. With my 3yr at night I use GMD overnight stay dry doubler with a GMD large muslin flat.

    For my 15 month old heavy front wetter girl, in the daytime we use a large clotheez muslin flat with a half birdseye flat. For night time, I can stick a hemp insert in there, or even just fold to put in front, but lately I'm trying out other solutions. I've been using grovia one with both their inserts plus another hemp insert in the front, or some hemp/bamboo flitteds with the extra hemp insert which I'll top with a regular cover or a wool cover. Everything I use is 2nd hand except for the flats which I bought new. I never see flats for resale.

    I remember starting out I was soooo intimidated by flats. In the beginning we used prefolds and covers and pockets stuffed with prefolds for daycare. Now that I'm home fulltime I finally decided to try flats and oh my I can't believe I waited this long. I love flats. And I love Thirsties new line of Stay-dry Cotton Doublers. They go perfectly on top of the flat for nap time to help with the additional absorbency and keeping little man feeling dry. I love your channel and am so excited to continuing to see more from you!

    My entire stash. I have 10 newborn rumparoos cover 24 newborn, 24 size small, 24 size medium and 5 size large all GMD prefolds 12 os buttons covers and 3 super buttons cover. Currently we use the size medium on my 10 month old and use a size large and a newborn with a super cover for over night. Love love love this cloth diaper system. It’s takes a lot of trial and error to find what works for our family 3rd kid we’ve cloth diapered.

    I’ve been using best bottoms bamboo during the day for 2 years through 2 kids. In the past 6 months or so I started using geffen fleece prefolds. I remember thinking $13 for a prefold was crazy, but they work great for my flooder.
    Microfiber is what I use when I fall behind on laundry or I need a booster. Microfiber doesn’t work at all for heavy wetters

    Cloth diapering baby #4! Over the years I've found that prefolds, flats and covers work best for our family. I agree that the green mountain diaper m flats are the best during the day. They wash beautifuly. Works for my 8 month old and my 3 year old. For bedtime I do prefer pocket diapers. We do need a bamboo or hemp insert along with the flat or prefold at night. Soon I hope to try out the large m flats. I really enjoy your videos !

  • @kmccrackan
    @kmccrackan 5 лет назад +2

    Love your videos,messy or not. Right now I’m using during the day I use a few things,
    1. thirties cotton doubler with a mama koala bamboo insert
    2. Nickis snapless fitted
    3. a flat wrapped around a Geffen microfiber layered with a thirsties hemp
    4. A flat either origami fold or pad-fold
    5. Medium prefold, or a newborn prefold layered with bamboo
    It depends how i feel during each change. Lol. I have a heavy wetter so I’m trying new combos every so often. Right now I’m liking covers with flats, microfiber and bamboo at night. Although I’m considering of trying bamboo flats, since I only have 5 cotton flats.

      How are you liking your stretchy flats? Did you get just a hemp blend or a hemp/bamboo blend.

    • @HaleysHomestead
      @HaleysHomestead 5 лет назад +1

      Jay's Nest I bought some of those too. I got 8 we haven’t been able to try them too much yet, but so far I like them. Do you know the exact fabric it is? And I have the ft bamboo, the hemp bamboo jersey, and the hemp cotton stretch fabric. I like them all. The ft bamboo is a bit bulky for my preference and the bamboo hemp is super absorbent for how trim it is but I find it’ll only hold like one pee unless I add a booster (since I use wool mainly with my flats). My hemp cotton is super thin, I like it pad folded in covers and it absorbs a ton! I might buy more of the moonglade fabric if I can find it.

  • @tehibberd

    For my toddler I use medium cotton prefolds and muslin flats with a mix of thirsties, Flip, nickis diapers and blueberry capri covers in the day time and large bamboo prefolds with a cotton booster at night in a thirsties size 2 cover.
    For my newborn I'm using newborn cotton prefolds in the day and at night usually imagine newborn bamboo fitteds. :)

    I tend to fall back on GMD workhorses and their Flip or Nickis covers. My mini has never leaked out of a workhorse but I do put a scrap cut piece of fleece down to protect against wetness. I just dumped all my microfiber pocket insert since they dried out my hands stuffing and use FSTs or flats for stuffing. Seems a bit bulky sometimes but I'm not going back. Thanks for the videos!

  • @omgitsbecki

    For my newborn (2 months), one charcoal bamboo is working for the time being. I'm thinking I'm going to have to up her absorbency soon. I do Thirsties NAIO or Smartbottoms Deam 2.0 overnight for her right now.
    For my 2 year old, my favorite (because it's SO trim) is a Thirsties large hemp insert and half of a FST, pad folded and sewn. I don't have enough of the Thirsties for all of her diapers though, so I also do a pad folded FST + either a Mama Koala bamboo microfiber, or a Charlie Banana hemp. I do Grovia O.N.E. overnight for her.

    We use cotton flats boosted with AMP hemp 3 layer inserts for naps/longer times between changes and bamboo flats un-boosted for regular times! My 3 year old is at a stage. He can wear just about anything and it holds up. I change him about every 3-4 hours because he holds all of his pee for awhile. Even just a microfiber insert hold just fine for him. But my one year old is the polar opposite if I can make it 2 hours with her I am lucky. There are moments I have to change her after 30 minutes because she pees so much. Natural fibers are a must for her.

    • @JaysNest
      @JaysNest  5 лет назад

      FSTs are so trim on newborns and little babies! I wasnt able to get the pickman down when Willow was a small baby. Poop always spilled out onto the cover lol. It's still one of my favorite folds though

    • @user-mu1zy2yg3r
      @user-mu1zy2yg3r 5 лет назад

      @@JaysNest a good jelly roll with the wings is key. Its the only fold that will usually contain the poop. Also it's very easy to adjust to put the absorbency in her wet zone. The only down fall is she's sensitive to wetness. We use fleece liners but they sometimes shift. After a while day or two the shifting can add up and make her start getting pink. So I'll give her air and switch back to pockets or I'll just switch back and forth the whole day

  • @td5489
    @td5489 5 лет назад +2

    Right now we do pocket alvas with a microfiber and flour sack towel, we hope to move away from microfiber eventually but for a heavy wetting toddler for us it works we have a boy on the way and know that probably what works for our girl may not work for our boy so it'll be a couple months of trial and error again but so much better than forking over hundreds of dollars a month for disposables for two little's with sensitive skin.

    For my first two kids one girl and one boy, flour sack towels and receiving blankets worked the best. Around 1.5 years old I had to double the flour sack towels. I just pad folded them and put them in my Alva pockets and a few nickis covers that I had. Microfiber stopped working with my first after about 6 months so I stopped using it and went cotton all the way. With my second I got some hemp and bamboo boosters which really helped lessen the bulk of the flour sack towels because I no longer had to double up in them with the boosters. I ended up getting some cotton hemp flats that worked amazing overnight for my second babe. We will see what works with baby number 3 when she gets here in March 😊 right now I have a bunch of mixed nb all in ones and several applecheeks and several different types of covers. I never used nb diapers on my first two, so I’m super excited to with this one. When she gets big enough we’ll move to my one size stash that I used with my first two.

    • @chelseagarchar4338
      @chelseagarchar4338 5 лет назад

      Jay's Nest it really has, I’m so ready to meet her!! Starting to get a little achy and miserable stage. Fst’s was definitely bulky doubled but it worked till I bit the bullet and finally got some hemp and bamboo used off facebook. It definitely helped with the bulk when I was able to just use one fst and a hemp insert. I have also seen a lot of people pad fold an fst inside another fst that’s diaper bag folded. So you still have all that absorbency but it’s less bulky that way too. There’s more than one way to skin a cat and that’s what I love 💕 about cloth diapering is there are so many ways to make it work.

      Love the Duo wraps! I find them to be sooo trim. You can use flats in the same way as your prefolds, and when baby isn't pooping as often you can just padfold them in the covers. The nice thing about pockets and covers vs AIO's is that you can very easily adjust the absorbancy as your babe grows and their needs change (:

    I don't have favorite absorbances in practice yet because most of what I know about different fabrics has come from reading. I am, however, generally obsessed with natural fibers so I'll probably lean that way. What I don't know yet is how much absorbancy to have in a diaper. I play around with it, but sometimes it seems like my son's diaper is so thick that he can't walk quite normally and walks like a bow legged cowboy. 😆

    Prefolds and thirsties covers. We we’re trying pockets but there just not for us I guess. We’re using oso cozy prefolds but she’s growing out of them and she’s such a heavy wetter at 3 months old so I’m investing in gmd medium prefolds. Idk which they are they are long not wide blue edge. And yea we had leaks out of the legs with them but I didn’t have good absorption in them. However the other day we used a grovia bamboo blend medium size and she soaked it within a hour and a half. Which that’s not to bad bc I change her a lot. When we get the gmd I’m thinking of just getting the medium red edge and 1 pack of smalls to pad fold. She’s about 13 lb if I’m guessing.. what would you suggest?

After watching one of your videos, I tried one of my cotton prefolds during the day and loved it! Im too scared to even do a fitted all the way through the night, but I do either my geffen, hemp fitted or Nickis bamboo flat with one change for night time!

    Most of my stash is from my daughter 6 years ago and from my sister's kids that she was given from a friend. I have sooo much but I don't know what anything is. And I cant remember which item worked well after its washed.

    I'm new to cloth diapering and have been going through your videos. I know you mainly use flats now, but when you still used inserts did you ever consider making your own? We started cloth diapering with Alva pockets, their microfiber inserts, and FSTs but even doing a FST/microfiber combo isn't always enough for my 3 month old. Look around at all the inserts online is super overwhelming to me, and I was just thinking about making my own.

    What are some of your favorite brands for pocket diapers? I am trying to find solutions for when I’ll have to take my child to nursery at 5 months!

      I used bamboo French stretch terry!
      I made a very detailed video about what I used, where I got it, and how to make your own. It’s super easy 😊

    I have a silly question are muslin flats the one's I swaddled my baby at birth with Aden+Anais the same as the one's you can buy at like GMD & Nickis diapers ? Can I use my old swaddle blankets for stuffing my pockets or snappi that around him is it the same ?

    • @JaysNest
      @JaysNest  5 лет назад +2

      Yes! They’re similar material! Not exactly the same but they’re from the same family of fabric.
      A&A blankets are huge so they’d probably need to be cut down. But they’re the same concept. Also, they’re super absorbent!

    When my baby gets here I'll be using flower sacks "flats" and
    (I wanna) wash every 3 days I know every child is DIFFRENT but with your experience how many do you think I should get to be safe lol

    • @JaysNest
      @JaysNest  5 лет назад +1

      Do you want to exclusively use FSTs?
      For newborns I like to have 15 changes a day. So 45 changes for 3 days. But if your baby isn’t a super pooper then that will be VERY roomy.
      Willow goes through like 10 a day now. Sometimes 8.
      45 is about my sweet spot for my stash right now.

      Also have extra to double up just in case. In my personal experience fst hold almost nothing. They are very easily out wet.

    • @Tier1Rabbit
      @Tier1Rabbit 5 лет назад +1

      Yes ill be exclusively FST.
      I have 30 pockets for them and 6 covers.
      But 45 sounds good.
      Thank you!!!!!!!! I have 50 of them lol but i wasn't sure if I should put them on my baby shower register or not.

      I highly suggest getting boosters if you can. During the Flats and Handwashing Challenge I got a bunch of hand towels to use as boosters! They’re SO absorbent. I forget which video I showed them in. I had a video clip of me at the store showing which ones I got. I think it might be the Flats Stash Cost video! If you’re on a tight budget I highly recommend them

    Hello Jay!
    I would like to know the size of the smart bottoms hemp prefold (small or medium) that you showed in this video and also want to know whether thirties duo wrap size one work under the umbilical cord

    • @JaysNest
      @JaysNest  5 лет назад +1

      I use size medium and large smart bottoms hemp prefolds.
      Thirsties size 1 didn’t work for my youngest baby under the cord, but she was short with a short torso. It might work for longer babies though
