Matt, I have had good luck fishing the hula grub on a Jika Rig. I make my own rig (hook-weight-split ring). I think it gives the bait more action. Nice video
Mark Zona was just talking about that on BTL this morning. The males start to make beds and after a couple of days of the females not moving up, they move back off the fresh beds
Matt Zona did a thing on the false spawn in the fall. You are hitting the nail on the head with your theory. Especially here in Northern Michigan Fishing the Great lakes.
Always been a fan of the gybc 4 n 5”. Also like the keiteck little spiders, also love the cabin creeks with their huge color library. BUT, my favorite absolute favorite spiders of all time are/were the JDC baits spider grubs. Nothing like em. Unfortunately, like all good things, there stopped making them a long time ago. It’s unfortunate because they were packaged perfectly . Unlike Yamamoto. The flapping parts on the JDC baits were always perf. Never folded or creased. Great vid Matt
My Pastor and bass fishing partner is going to enjoy seeing this video. His #1 bait is the hula grub and we started using the 2.5” a month ago with our bfs rods for wis river smallies and local lake largemouth and the bass like them. The 2.5” allows us to use 1/16 and 1/8oz with our bfs and we’ve been getting 12-17.5” bass. The berkley half head is our choice for open hook and the Picasso weedless rhino ned head is our choice when we want to fish it in grass or wood and under docks.
Mark Zona said the same thing about some of them spawning in Michigan in the fall. He said they use to win Debbie's with bed fish in Sept, oct.. and actually take time off still to fish them
I have those same sized ones and I texas rigged one on a micro chatterbait yesterday but had no luck getting bit. Mainly because of the flooded rivers here in NE Tennessee
I don't have any hula grubs but I have some 4" double tails. When on that 1/8oz jig, the slow fall is really interesting, as it sort of falls in short little spurts on it's own.
I still use these to this day, you can’t go wrong with these lures! Some how they’ve dropped out of favor! Yamamoto dropped the 6” line which is my favorite one!
I think here in Ozarks rivers in the fall. The Smallmouth Bass tried to spawn, but the the females don't have eggs far enough along in them to make it happen. The males with water temperatures are all set to go. So there peeing when caught. Question what jighead do you use with Keitect spiders grubs? I been using Keitect jighead . Have trouble keeping the grub in place. Glue is a mess. Love the channel.
I still prefer the keitech ones. They just have such good action and there pretty good durability. Plus I really dig the colors of the little spider and hyper spider
Absolutely small mouth males during the full moon a few days give or take in October up north with the wtr temperatures in the correct range they even make beds and lock in for a few days and your not the only one to put that information out Mark Zona during a recent interview he spilled the beans but he wasn't as suttle as you 😂.

I had heard Zona talk about the fall false spawn. I had used spider jigs back when Gitzit made them. They were dynamite.

Check out the keitech hyper spider! It’s like the new version of this bait except instead of a twin curly tail it’s like a rage craw.
