This is great. I'm an old guy who has picked up the sticks after 30+ years of not playing. Everything from hard rock to symphonic music in my past. I've played professionally with bands at night clubs and small venues and symphonic orchestras at large venues. Retired after many years of plumbing and a medical career or two in there, I volunteer at my church and play every Sunday. I am relearning the 13 basic elements and have given a few lessons to young people. Right now I am just trying to get my paradiddle up to speed. It takes lots of time and effort but I will get it with practice. Thanks for this lesson, I will attempt this polyrhythm very slowly; I think it will help. Turning 70 this next year and still drumming with no end in sight. Thanks Mike. You are a wonderful teacher with good technique in counting.
Much appreciated old friend! It wont get many views but it's one of those things that I just have to share with the few that will watch it because it will unlock so many doors for them.
@@mikeslessons love that man! I can get too caught up in what will “do well” on RUclips and it hinders my creativity at times. Thanks for the inspiration!
I like your style man. You’re successful because of RUclips , but you do your thing. You’re not trying to be the biggest RUclips drummer in the world because you’ve built your own thing. I admire and respect your hard work sir. Carry on. ✌🏻❤️💪🏻
If you really want to you can. Download the video (I believe RUclips premium lets you do that, I hear there are sites online too), then open a new project at the BPM of performance ( in this case it is given; 60 and 120 but if it is not use LiveBPM app to determine BPM of clip and set in DAW) drop the file into a DAW (Reaper, GarageBand, etc)-be sure tempo set before you drop in to avoid time stretching the clip to the wrong BPM-the line up the section to the click, loop, etc
I started playing this on the kit 3 min into the video, BUT realized it was HARD to count with the high hat while sevens were playing… I made it easier and just playing paradiddlediddles without the kick, while counting to the 4/4 left foot. Then I had a bunch of fun on the drums lol thanks for getting me on the kit my friend 🙏
Hey Mike, unbelievably good explanations and examples here from you Sir! Honestly: As a teacher it's almost impossible to get any more authentic, motivating, honest and the list could go on. From teacher to teacher (and just in case no-one mentioned before): You rock! ✌🏼😃 Keep it up and big drummer hug from Germany! All the best, Jochen
Thanks, Mike I like this, this fits where I am right now in my drumming. This seems like a juicy challenge to sink my teeth into. It also contributes to improving my foot skills which I am working actively to improve. I will be adding this next into the exercises I practice and I look forward to seeing the results. The last challenge I did of yours with the exercise (paradiddle-diddle, paradiddle-diddle paradiddle) not only improved my hand speed on the paradiddles and paradiddle-diddles but it gave me many groove ideas and other fill ideas that I applied the exercise to. So I do look forward to incorporating this as well. As always thank you for great drumming instruction. :-)
Love this! I spent 3 days ( a year or so ago ) learning the Bossa nova, and just fell in love with learning independence.. Great lesson Mike! inspired again :)
I will finally be able to spend a week with my acoustic drums at my parents house. This will be on the todo list for sure, and it sounds good ! Thanks for sharing !
Paradiddlediddle is one of my favorite rudiments and now you have just melted my brain with this. Very cool. time to go to work learning this! Great lesson as always! BTW where's the pup LOL
Yeah.Every four groups of 7 brings it the cycle back to the beginning and back in line with the hi-hat.Cheers Mike good stuff.Sounds nice when you bring some toms in.
Feet RLRLL...5 Hands RLRLRLL...7 Hands and feet both play eighth notes then after you have cycled the hand pattern five times metrically modulate up to eighth note triplets then when they land on one again move up to 16th notes then 16th note triplets. This took me a very long time to master
would absolutely love to see how you would approach drumming if you were a beginner all over again. if you did beginner jazz lessons to i would eat that shit up like hot cakes! but ofc, follow ur intuitive inspiration!
I have dozens of courses on exactly that. Taking students from DAY 1 up to pro, step by step. RUclips is just fun. My website is where I actually teach the "real stuff' lol. Hope ya check it out some day Monica :) - www.mikeslessons.com
This is perfect! Been working on odd groupings for a few months now and feel stuck not moving on to other things but I know my sevens aren't fellowshipped yet!
After a couple of days of working with it, I can finally play the exercise at 50 bpm. So, I am playing it slowly until I am comfortable with it and then will speed the tempo up gradually until I can play it at 120 bpm. It has already stretched my skill a bit and I look forward to becoming comfortable enough to move it around the kit as well. :-)
Up to 80 bpm and having fun with it. It is starting to feel more comfortable to my limbs. My left foot is my Achilles heel, and it is limiting me for now. I am working on my feet however and as that improves, it is natural that this will improve as well. Still I am having a lot of fun with it and it is stretching me for sure.
That lovely energy is surely infectious. No wonder it makes everybody's day. Big fan of yours Mike. BTW, have you reached a point where you press record and get most of the final vid in TAKE 1? Lol.
To your point, most of the exercises I do are not practical but they're just hard, and to force my brain to work. Like new math, trying to train the brain. I do an exercise that's similar in concept, but different. I do 2 up 2 down with kick and tom repeated, but in triplets while keeping quarter note on HH. TTK KTT KKT TKK (2 per tom, moving around the toms) H H H H
Honestly my favorite thing about this is the long group of seven sevens when you listen to it at 120. It's like a massive wide open 7-groove itself. You could write a song over this.
Thanks for sharing, this really opens a new feel while trying to fill those empty spaces. This is a ah ha moment. Not going to be easy, yet this gives a good perspective of where to start. BTW, I enjoy your online school.
