I've been learning photoshop for the past month, this is the first tutorial that taught me the ALT shortcut with the pen toool, damn. Thank you very much!
I was fighting with that curve thing the other day. Omg thank you!! As to the smart asses saying you could have magic wanded that... I was one pixel erasing before this!! Cus magic wand just isn't enough
Awesome tutorial! Loving the channel. Only one thing, Photoshop is pixel based program, term raster is used in print for the little dots which make the printed material. While in Photoshop we manipulate pixels and even vectors in some cases and while watching the monitor screen we are looking at pixels. Other than that, amazing tutorial! Thank you.

Question: how can you delete a handle on an existing shape? Look at the rounded rectangle. Both handles point to the corners and there are no handles on the straight sides. Is it possible to recreate that?
@@PhotoManipulation Alt-clicking the anchor removes all handles. Make a basic rounded rectangle and hit it with the pen tool and see how the anchors are created. It's like your Alt tip but the handles alternate sides. In mid-path, you can also alt-click a new anchor to get one handle, but it only controls the leading direction. I often work with rigid geometric shapes and would love to be able to create rounded corners like the rounded rectangle on more complex shapes. Currently I stretch the handles across the flat spans to approximate a straight line - think creating a rounded rectangle from scratch at a 22.5° angle.

Is there any particular reason for creating multiple anchor points when working on a completely straight surface (such as the mug side in this example), or would it be okay to just create one at the start of the straight edge and one at the end? wouldn't this be a lot quicker workflow wise?
I can't believe how many pen tool videos I have watched that make it look sooo easy, yet when I try, the path ends up in a mess of spaghetti lines leading me to say this *#&! Pen Tool! This video, however, is the first one that had the simple idea of using the Alt key on the last point. It might seem like a time consuming extra step, but actually saves time by making the path creation smooth with far less errors and adjustments needed. Thanks for the insight!
Noted! The thinking behind the choice of object to mask was so it was clearly visible and could show how close you would need to get for accurate selections. We really appreciate the feedback and will take this into consideration for future releases on this subject. Many Thanks!
Good explanation. Still quite an unituitive tool. Adobe should have a had a look at it even if they want to keep it but do an alternative tool that's more straight forward. I think its the handles being active and the need to turn them off makes the tool tricky.
I know I am in the minority, but I love cutting out complicated photos using the pen tool; it has a sort of cathartic effect on me lol I just fix a cup of jasmine tea, put my headphones on, put on some music, and have at it.

I can't thank you enough! I didn't want to learn the pen tool because it was to fiddly. It's the only way I create my masks now. It is very relaxing.

If I get what you're saying correctly dk, you can delete a 'handle' by alt-clicking on the anchor point! Hope that helps :)

There's many ways, i think it's down to the artists personal techniques!!!
