What I like about this scene is that the beatdown is just brutal. No finesse, no change of hands, no flashy choreography just pure brute force, ending the "fight" in 3 seconds flat. And that sends a clear message to anyone in there.
Honestly the guy he hit is most likely dead. No way his neck didn't snap under that much pressure.
It's more realistic fight too I worked in a bar fr 4 years and the bouncers had a 3 second rule: 99% of fights are over in 3 seconds. They are a quickly frenzy of violence then people running away.
Real fights aren't some UFC LARPing crap that goes back and forth for 5 minutes. It's bash and dash.

Reacher is a textbook example of "I'm not locked in here with you. You're locked in here with me."
What I really love about this Reacher is that he isn't some hand to hand, ex-combat specialist, he is a big guy who combines his military experience with his natural strength to win fights which even sometimes includes using nutshots or eye gouches because that's how you would actually fight irl.

Yeah. He's not a magical "I am proficient in eeeeeeverything even though thats not how the military trains you" veteran. He's big, strong, and has retained some combat skills. He COULD lose a fight, he just doesn't. He might be the best written combat character alongside Mack Bolan from The Executioner series.
He's one scary looking dude. In a close quarters area like a prison cell his size, strength and skill is almost unbeatable! A perfect strategy as well, a quick headbutt with elbows and lights out!

I wouldn't call it "gratuitous" violence. Gratuitous means it's not essential to the scene and just thrown in for shock value. That violence was important to the plot in this case.

I know everyone loves Reacher in this scene, but let's not forget Marc Bendavid as Paul also does a great job. Just look at him in that prison cell standing in the corner looking like a caged animal. When he's about to be assaulted, you see him nervously look around and quickly glance up to Reacher to see if he's going to do anything. The scene works so well because you really feel nervous for Paul. And his reaction to what happens next is our reaction.

Yeah, you can really see it in the other black guy's body language. Whoever that guy is, if he's an extra or not, he's talented.
I love that Reacher struck at 2 in the countdown. Preemptive strike. The other guy was expecting that he would count down to 1 and then try and hit him, but Reacher knew that once he was down counting to 2, the other guy HAD to get it. Made him sleep in less than 5 seconds. Such a satisfying scene. 😂
Yes, he does this all the time in the books. He calls it "getting your retaliation in first".
He said in the books a couple of times that to win a fight you hit first and you hit hard. Hit hard enough that you won't need to hit again.
In one Jack Reacher book, he describes the "cigarette punch". You offer the guy you mean to hit a cigarette. When he accepts it and puts in into his mouth with his lips pursed and his jaw hanging slacked, he is distracted and you uppercut the shit out of him. When Reacher does it, you're probably dead.

Not just that but Reacher didn't lie when he said he would count to three the guy was literally expecting him to count except Reacher counted with his elbow. That's one of the great things about Alan's Reacher he uses the element of surprise and plans ahead by having his opponent relaxed he's able to inflict more damage.
I ❤ when the dude says “Do you know who you’re talking to?” and Reacher responds with “1” to start the count down. 😂 That is so awesome. Basically he said “I don’t care” without actually saying it. I really like Tom Cruise but Alan Ritchson is brilliant as Jack Reacher & I hope this series continues for a while.
I love it for all the right reasons but all respect to Tom Cruise ( I'm sure he is a great action hero and Scientologist and inspector of closets) but he is way waaay too pretty and small to be Reacher , good movie but it never sat right with me.
Alan Ritchson embodies the original and I love the 'lines' especially when he tells Oscar Finlay 'you know it's hard to tell with the suit on, but you're kinda jacked Finlay' Really? No' Ah ha ha, you never tell your friends you actually like them or deliver a compliment that isn't some sort of trap or veiled insult? The nearest we ever came, when we were into motorbikes was the parting farewell 'may you keep your arse beneath you' which is not a bad idea for bike guys but it also referenced the night three guys in a row 'lost it' on the same corner (black ice), just a reminder?

People think numbers matter when they don’t know someone’s history, and over estimate size in that matter. I’ve seen 160lb guys steam roll 210lb guys easily.
That shot at 3:41 as he enters the yard wearing his new shades is priceless.
There are two things you don't do in life:

In a strange but welcome way, there is a certain purity to everything that Reacher does, especially when he fights.
If I only had the fighting skills of Jack Reacher.
Start training. Get a punching bag and a sparring partner. In a year you could beat up most guys on street but never use it for attack, only for defense
I like how Jack Reacher uses alot of brute strength in his fighting style because that's how reality works in a real life fight, brute strength in a fight is always king 🤴 💪 👍💯🆒️

Tom Cruise is indeed a very good actor, although I think he brought a different element than most people were expecting character wise. Tom Cruise's version seems cockier, more confrontational and just outwardly more aggressive than the Reacher character that I know. @@lurogaso
this scene in book is next level, because you know exactly what reacher thinks in that moment ,the book is in first person and best peace of thriller,

@@cubed2164 happened maybe 4 times that I knew of in my pod alone the 6 months I was in. I was never involved but it's definitely something that jeeps your senses at all times.

What's really scary about this situation (from the standpoint of the guy Reacher is protecting), is it's not going to end well for you no matter what you do (i.e., assume Reacher isn't there). If words/charm/negotiations fail, then I think maybe a surprise strike to the neck or nose as hard as you can...you'll likely be hospitalized later by his goons. But this might buy you some time to find allies.

this is one of the best shortest hand to hand combat ive ever seen in movies/web shows and Ive seen a lot of fight movies.
and the best part is that this really is how a MP would fight he controls the space so the targets backup cannot interfere he uses quick simple attacks that wont cost him to much stamina and he just dosent hit the guy once and tells him to get out he renders him unconscious to make sure hes not a threat in that min and dose it all with a controlled brutality that makes the remaining potential combatants unwilling to produced

This is the absolute best version of Lee Childs reacher who can dish out absolute violence but also with an amazing moral compass and make it funny as well it really is a pity there are only 2 seasons as they really need to make more as I’d also love to see a reacher and the equaliser co-op that would make a great film.

Tom Cruise's Reacher couldn't have quickly established dominance like Alan Ritchson's Reacher did and would have had to contend with the other two as well (in his own words in the movie, "enthusiastic wingmen"). Cruise Reacher could ultimately win the fight, but Ritchson Reacher deterred the escalation.

I like how he didn’t even finish to 3 and instead of going for a fist attack where he could’ve blocked it or avoided it he did something unexpected a headbutt and then that allows him to knock him out quick with those elbows to the neck.
